rcfz mira Strains of violins mingled with deep tones of string basses echoing through the Auditorium could mean but one thing-the orchestra at work. After having appeared in a Christmas ccncert and a pre-contest concert, the orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Valdemar Johnson, participated in the sub-district contest at Charles City where they were given a rating of excellent. Their selections were Kamenoi Ostrow by Rubenstein, Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Brahms and Asc-'s Death from Peer Gynt by Grieg. The orchestra was well balanced this year with the purchase of two new Maddy aluminum string basses and five new eellos, played by students who had no experience on these instruments. Students taking part in solo work were: Betty Ami Elmflllisff. violin: Ida Robertson, viola, Emily DeNoyelles, cellog Marlys Johnson, string bass: Eunice Rutherford, bassrton, and Dorothy Chambers, piano. Besides the soloists there were other members of the band and orchestra eligible for the national auditions which took place at the district contest at Waterloo. The different grr ups taking part were: oboe duet by Josephine Lybbert and Phyllis Darby: Cornet duet by Donald Lybbert and Marian Rasmussen: piccolo solo by Marlys John- scn: clarinet duet by John Tlusty and Shirley Davis. Two small groups, thc woodwind chamber and the brass quartet, also appeared. Marlys Johnson did outstanding work in receiving a superior in the district contest in her string bass solo, thus making her eligible for the state contest in May 6 in Iowa City where she received a rating ot' excellent. Much credit is to be given to Ruth Blackburn for accompanying our soloists and groups. i Marys
