Wrestling Five lettermen returned to school as a nucleus for the 1933-34 wrestling team which went through another undefeated season by winning five dual meets, thus ex- tending the winning streak of the matmen to 28 consecutive victo1'ies. The teams de- feated were: Dubuque. 30 to 63 Clarion, 24 to 123 East Waterloo, 1825 to 15V2g New Hampton, 2495 to 1195 and 2112- to 12 1-2. Cresco won the Northeast Iowa district tournament, gaining 39 points. Dale Hanson, Earl Hilke, Earl Thomas, Donald Maland and Nevin Johnson won district championships, with Harold Nichols and Edward Merrill second. Cresco placed third in the Fort Dodge State meet with Dale Hanson, Earl Thom- as, and Donald Maland as champions. Earl Hilke and Harold Nichols won third places. Several members of the squad competed in the Waterloo Northeast Iowa Y. M. C. A. tournament, Dale Hanson and William Burns winning first Dlaces in the 85 and 115 pound classes. Donald Maland and Earl Thomas, by winning first and second places in the Midwest A. A. U. tournament at Cherokee thereby qualified for the National A. A. U. 'tournament at Ames. Maland was unable to compete because of illness but Thomas won the national title in the 118 pound class. Donald Maland has been state champion three times, won thirty-eight consecu- tive bouts, and has never been defeated. He was elected honorary captain of this year's team. Thomas has been a consistent winner throughout his four years in high school and won the highest national honor possible for an amateur to attain by win- ning the championship in the National A. A. U. tournament. Thomas, Maland, Harold Nichols, Nevin Johnson, William Burns and Edward Merrill are senior lettermen who are going to be difficult to replace next year, Twenty-six

Basketball Graduation last year took a huge toll in basketball regulars and reduced the prospects for the 1933-34 team. Kvam, a regular, and Harnoss, a second-string man, were the only letter players. The new team made a slow start, but gradually improved, In the Northeastern Iowa Conference, by rating 500 per cent, Cresco finished fourth among the ten schools. Two thrillers were won from Decorah and two games from Waukon. Defeats were registered at the hands of Osage, New Hampton, and Charles City. In non-conference competition, games were lost to Elma and Mason City-two teams that went to the state tournament. Cresco defeated Lime Springs in an early- season game, but went down before Riceville in an upset. The lettermen ending their competition are: Loughrey, Captain Hanneman.
