Crchestra Mr. Popejoy's orchestra this year had thirty-seven members. No piano was used, the orchestra having almost complete instrumentation, and a high standard of music was played. A constitution was adopted and the following officers elected: president, Donald Maland: vice president, Richard Reedg secretary, Ruth Champlin. Rakoczy March , Dawn,', and Titus Overture were the numbers used in the music contest. The orchestra received a rating of Good. A string quartette, and violin, viola, and 'cello solos, were also entered in the contest. All of these received Excellent in the sub-district, and Richard Barnes' viola solo received Excellent in the district contest. Fourteen

Mixed Chorus Miss Monasmith also did remarkable work with her mixed chorus, and was re- warded by seeing this group, too, receive Superior rating at the state contest ln Iowa. City. The chorus had 37 members-eighteen boys, and nineteen girls. They won rankings of Superior at both the sub-district and district music contests. This was the first time a Cresco mixed chorus cver won through to the state music contest. Inez Skogsmark was the soprano soloist: Jane Burgess, contraltog Daniel Chehak, tenor: and Vern Herold, baritone. They all won Excellent at the sub-district contest. Vern Herold was eligible to compete in the district contest, where he ranked Superior, thus qualifying for the state contest at Iowa City, where he was given a mark of Excellent. Thirteen

Band The band this year numbered fifty-two, the largest the school has ever had. The instrumentation was nearly complete. Several concerts were given. The marching band formed letters and other evolutions worked out for football games, with Harold Normann as drum major. A pep band played for wrestling meets and basketball games. A constitution was adopted this year. The officers were: president, Vern Heroldg vice president, Richard Barnes, secretary, Joe Burgess. Mr. Popejoy was the director, The overture Stradel1a and Cabins were played at the sub-district music contest, the band receiving a rating of L-ood.
