His Holiness Pope John XXIII
"Venerable Brother, I shall be called John. This name is sweet
to us because it was our father's, it is dear because it was the name
of the humble parish in which We received baptism." With these
words addressed to the Cardinals in Conclave, Angelo Giuseppe
Roncalli, Patriarch of Venice since 1953, accepted the burdens of
the Papacy and became the 262nd successor of St. Peter. With the
whole world, we reioice in the selection of Our Holy Father Pope
John XXIII. Born November 25, 1881 into a humble and God-
fearing family in Bergamo, Pope John XXIII was ordained a priest
on August 10, 1904, consecrated titular Archbishop of Areopolis
on March 19, 1925, created Cardinal January 12, 1953, appointed
Patriarch of Venice January 15, 1953, and elected to the Papacy
October 28, 1958.
Already, Pope John XXIII has endeared himself to the people
of Rome and to the Church throughout the world. His simplicity
and great humility, blended with wit and humor, have quickly
been noted by the world. Terming himself a "pastoral" Pope, John
XXIII assumes that beloved name most often used by the Popes
and prays that he may model his life upon that of the two great
Johns, John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. "Little children,
love one another, love one another because this is the great com-
mandment of the Lord. Venerable Brothers, may God grant in His
mercy that, bearing the name of the first of this series of Supreme
Pontiffs, we can, with the help of Divine grace, have this sanctity of
life and his strength of soul into the shedding of our blood, if God
so wills." ln our own humble way, we pray that God may grant
many years of service to Our Holy Father and that we may have a
small share in helping him to establish the spirit of peace in the

is Holiness the Late Pope Pius XII
After nearly two decades as the Vicar of Christ upon earth,
Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII, passed to his eternal rest on
October 9, l958. We were deeply saddened at the death of
this saintly and energetic Pontiff, who brought to the throne
of Peter such a rich understanding of the peoples of all na-
tions. He was the "Pope of Peace," a spiritual hero modelling
his life upon that of the Prince of Peace. He saw himself so
clearly as Christ's Vicar f one who stands in the Lord's place
for a time - and nature and grace combined to produce in
him that warm personality that made him so immediately
one to whom it was easy to give devoted and dedicated
The death of a Pope is only a momentary melancholy, for
the heart of our holy faith is the confidence that he has
entered into his reward and that the Holy Spirit will continue
to guide the Church through historic time. The labors of Pope
Pius XII, long and exhausting, were given totally to the
Church and his mark has been left upon the record of these
years i939-1958. Commentators of another age will have to
measure in the long perspective of the Papacy the eminence
of his reign, but even now we know that he was one of the
great Popes of all time. We, the Seniors of l959, ioin a grate-
ful Church and pray for Pope Pius Xll's eternal repose in the
presence of the God he served with every energy of heart
