EDITH TOUMAINE 48 Crawford Street LOIS ELIZABETH WEIGNER 52 Philmont Avenue Basketball 2, 3, 4, Leader Corps 4 9-wmv? 1939 tmroplzecy of cgebruary Glass o 1939 IN the year 1960, the class of February 1939, of Cranston High School, pooled its funds, purchased Wake Island from the United States government, and set up the state of Utopia. Captain Ernie Swanson transported the pioneers to their destination on his diesel yacht, Wimpy XVII. Before long they discovered the necessity for government, and a most democratic form was adopted. By popular vote Harry Gray was elected Chairman of the Board of Governors. The following were chosen to serve upon the board: Eleanor Weisner, Robert Barningham, Fred Howard, and George Coffey. Priscilla Cranston is the Speaker of the House. The Utopia Utopian, edited by that eminent globe-trotter, Kenneth Hazard, features Miss Cranston's column, My Day. The Utopian has on its staff Jimmie MacDonald, world famous cartoonist and Avis Post, editor of the Womans Page. Utopia University soon gained recognition as one of the great centers of learning of the world. The school is efficiently managed by President Louis Fazzano, B. A., M. A., Ph. D., LL. D., Hon. Pres. of the Royal Academy of Utopian Arts. Lectures and exams are extrafcurricular. The only courses offered are those in domestic and biological sciences under the professorship of George Roberts and Earl G. Page, Jr. Sports are limited to football with Head Coach, AllfUtopian Ray Larson, Wally Davis and Bob Heaton serve as backfield coach and line coach respectively. At the other end of the island is Miss Kenyon's Finishing School for smart young women. Miss Nathalie Caldwell is head of the Dead Language Department. Mary Adams, head of the English Department, specializes in the poetry of the poet-laureate, Lloyd Sheeran. Ruth Geockel, the swimming coach, stresses bathing beauty contests more than swimming meets. Mildred Spelmen, Physical Ed. Supervisor, offers a most invigorating course in Tiddlywinks. The two schools are linked together by a Date Bureau with Hap Palmer representing U. U., and on the sly, Betsy Herrick from K. F. S. Neither police nor prisons are necessary in Utopia, and since the Fountain of Youth was discovered on the island, the hospitals have closed, thus putting jane Graves, Supervisor of Nurses, out of a job. Incidentally, Miss Graves is now doing missionary work on an unfutopian island nearby. The Utopian airport, ably managed by Olando Macari, keeps the populace in communication with the outside world since transfpacific clippers land there daily. The WrongfWayfCorrigan Restaurant situated at the airport and run by Angela DeSantis and Rose Paola keeps the clipper's passengers wellffed. One of the best customers is Kenneth Robinson, Good-Will Ambassador to whom it may concern. Almost any time one may tune in to WfUfT'O and hear the vigorous announce' ment of Donald Ford. Other high spots on the program of the station are One Family's Man featuring Virginia Smith, Helen O'Loughlin, Henry Morin and Mary Malley, the song birds of the airwaves. Only yesterday, Waldo Watkins, sports commentator, gave an eventfbyfevent account of the Knights of Utopia Track Meet. The food supply is taken care of by Joseph Iaciofano and his able distributors, Sahag Kalousdian and John Lane. Clifford Johnson has set up the elaborate Utopian Dairy. A unique feature is the milk maids, Edith Toumaine, Dorothy Kay, Ann Messerlian, Agnes Ledverissis. One wishing to spend a quiet evening, may go to the Library, where Barbara Harrington and Gladys Liljendahl are librarians. Or one may drop in at Howard Russell's Club Utoperico, where he may hear the bouncing rhythms of joseph Enos' GRADUATING O CLASS O 0F sans.: -..gf 22 nr-. .tv W, . - ---rv-mv . .I , . B 1939 ' famed all-girls' orchestra, featuring Mary Pati, blues singer, Eileen Anthony, bass strummerg Fannie Soscia, key tinklerg Priscilla Short, drummer, Lucy Coppolelli, sax player, and Gladys LeRiche, clarinetist. The master of ceremonies is Cap Donnelly, who enjoys introducing the chorus, the Bon Ton girls, including Florence Jacobs, Margaret Nelson, Emily Stamp, Violet Moran, Maxine Lamb, Anna Kucavicus, Virginia Colvin, and Claire Casey. The bouncer, Fat Anderson, doesn't have much business as Warren Nelson, the barftender, serves only orange juice. Visitors to the club cannot help noticing Lois Weigner giving away free gum, or the excellent head waiter, Norman Petterson. Indilferent people may attend the theater which features the pictures of the Universal Utopian Film Corp. The current hit is Alvin jager's The Merry Wives of Utopia, featuring Janet Dunn and Clint Sperry. A coming hit is Sherlock Homes Rides Again featuring james Leaver as Sherlock Holmes and Walter Rem' ington as Watson. The Motor Cycle Co., with Audrey! Armstrong, President, furnishes the island with the motor scooters. The VicefPresident of the company, Annetta Edwards, keeps the company out of the red. The sales manager, Anthony Cece, is the main reason why so many scooters are seen every Sunday afternoon making their way to Mt. Utopia. There Russell Brower teaches skiing on the soapfclipped slopes of the mountain. At the base on the artificial lake of glass, Hope Place, champion figure skater, performs many a fancy twist. Back in the metropolis Carolyn Schuster, famed dancer and creator of the Utopian Hop, holds many dance recitals. Utopia's Bazaar, edited by Helen Osterlund, and managed by Ruth Anderson, is one of the foremost periodicals of the World, featuring articles on faceflifting, mudpacks, etc., by Helen McCall. Richard Kellerman's School for Soda jerkers has attracted students from all over the globe, just as Michael Ricci's Super Laundry has brought laundry men from all corners of the earth to study his revolutionary method. With her Utopian dress designs, Barbara Hill has stolen the fashion center from Paris. On the main thoroughfare are the oflices of Utopia's thriving businesses, such as Robert Anderson and Theodore Norberg's haberdashery, Geraldine Fennessy and Annette Segal's Beauty Salon, Anna Rodi and Adeline Zarrelli's Cooking School for Young Brides, Lillian Rhodes and Laura Winslow's Chinese Tea Shoppe, Anna Najarian's factory for false eyelashes and fingernails, and the city office of Pasco Menna's banana plantation. And from a Classical point of view Utopia is Afl, as the Utopian Symphony Orchestra conducted by Guy Gargani, has for many seasons played in the outdoor temple of music. Out in the wild country, Mildred Bennett's Beauty Farm keeps the young ladies in trim, with Barbara Brokaw the riding mistress, and Elsie Siple the head of the hiking department. Utopia has its share of capitalists in Bill Grogan, Thomas Hanrahan, and Ray Burns who spend most of their time at the country club, run by Raymond Bood and that ambitious caddy master, James Champlin. Cranston's public has watched Utopia's development with great interest, and they feel that it will soon become a world power and that many other groups will try the Utopian method. Mrs. McCloskey is the former Jane Steimer. Charley, you know, is managing the 195' 0 Hawaiian World's Fair. We would like to review our journey for you, for we think you would be interested. We left Hillsgrove Airport, which, by the way, is being managed by the very capable Frank Feibelf man. Our pilot to Newark was Pete Gantnier, and our stewardess, Laura Bayan. To our surprise we found as fellow passengers Howard Anderson, Norman Hampson, Elaine Gallipeau, Bertha Coningford, Katherine Pescosoledo, Flora Salisbury, and Ray Cicchetti. Ray was en route to a Banker's Convention at Philadelphia, where he was to join Bill Rietzel and Bill Wheaf will, both of the National Banker's Association. At Newark we changed planes for San Francisco. Our new pilot was Stan Arnold. We were accompanied as far as Chicago by Al Gower, Joe Cantagallo, Russell Nelson, John Perf rino, and George Olson. After leaving Chicago, things ran along very smoothly until we were forced down on Earl Brown's ranch in Nevada. While our trusty mechanic, Lawson Mitchell, repaired the damage, we had an opportunity to talk to Earl and a few of his cowhands, Franklin Wilbour, Leonard Ehrencrona, Jim Keck, Everett Wheeler, and Ernie Desautel. Earl told us that Bill Bode ran a general store nearby, and Anthony Gudeczauskas owned the local barber shop. We bade the boys goodbye, and arrived without further incident at San Francisco. Since our boat wasn't due to leave till the next afternoon, we decided upon a sightseeing tour of Hollywood. john Kydd drove our bus and Frances Dempsey served as barker. There on your left, announced Francis, is the famous Marchant Movie Studio, which features such world famous stars as Francis Battey, Fred Leigh, Francis Davies, and Jean Jack. Director Charles Narcisso is finally completing Gone With The Wind with Gert Tucker as Scarlett O'Hara, and Bill Rogers as Rhett Butler. Our bus stopped at one of Nancy Babbitt's famous hot dog stands, where we were served by Carlo Colozzi and Tom Carnevale. Tom informed us that the fleet, under Admirals Blake and Goff, had dropped anchor in San Francisco Bay. The Girl Mariners, headed by Connie Brown and Helen Sherman, were to conduct a tea for a few of the officers. Lieutenants LaPerche and Possner, Ensign Viewig, and Captain Everett Phillips were among the honored guests. The next afternoon if Ernie Jordon hadn't come to our rescue with his speedy cab, we would have missed the boat. just as we arrived at the dock, Biagio Maggiacomo and Eugene Galli were pulling up the gang plank. Captain Henry Budlong and first mate Dana Farrar chided us for being so late, and Steward Alden Rittma nn led us to our cabins. GRADUATING O CLASS O 0F RLG-32 -..ggi 54 Bs..- 1939 At dinner that evening, we were joined by Anna Castergine, Marguerite Connelly, Lillian Castrovellari, and Elaine Murphy, teachers at Helen Hudson's finishing School for Young Ladies. They told us that they were on the way to the University of Shanghai to take a summer course conducted by Professor Clint Redstone, assisted by Louis Lombardi. Dinner was served by waiter Bill Thompson, who told us that the chef was Liberato Russo. After dinner we danced to the music of Ida May Cooney's allfgirl orchestra, which featured Norma Pfaifko and Virginia White as vocalists. Other members of the orchestra were Caro- lyn Anderson, Beatrice Collemer, Phyllis Robinson, Olive Manley, and Margaret Kooymjian, Jessie Traynor, and Norine Scanlon. The floor show included such artists as Margie Burgess and Harold Miller, famous tapfdancing team, and Everett Moretti's chorus with Majorie jack' son, Grace Bellows, Evelyn Hawksley, Jeanette Gaudet, Barbara Murray and Elnore Nordahl. The next morning we had a fire drill under the direction of boatswain Joe LeDoux. We all had to don Henry Sepe's patented Life Preservers. After this test we had a swim in the ship's pool where Edward Henry and Albert McDonald were lifefguards. Here Jack Winter and Dot Dale, ex-Olympic stars, gave a swimming exhibition. They were accompanied by their aquatic group including Clare Whalen, Barbara Gorton, Bessie Crabtree, William Perry, and Ken MacKenzie. Later we played volley ball with jackie Crowell, Eleanor Elias, Audrey Vivian, Helen Ellis, Nancy Dunlap, Marion Degnan, Ethel Deines, Harriet McOscar, Ruth Howes, and Jo Johnson. In the middle of the game the ball was lost overboard. Looking over the side, we were horri- fied to see that Miss McOscar was still hanging on to it. Sal Palliotto proved to be the hero of the day, diving over to rescue Harriet. We entered Pearl Harbor five days later, and were greeted at the pier by Pinky Salmon, the mayor of Honolulu. Their Chamber of Commerce, headed by Bill Sullivan and including Benny Smith, Herby Schwarz, Frank Tanzi, and Norman Warren were also on board to welcome us. As we drove along the main street in Andy Wallace's rickshaw, we noticed a W. P. A. project No. 6,000,000,002, putting up snow fences, with John Ward as foreman. Among John's workers were Gordon Yeoman, Walter Williams, Norman Whiting, Tony Venetuelo, and Ed Tulli. Bill pointed out the home of Ty Spinella, who with Booty Stevenson had developed quite a business of exporting pineapples. They appear back home as Frank Sparks' Delicious Brand. Stopping at Bob Kuzoian's souvenir shop, we bumped into Donald Mellor, Ev Mathewson, and Frog McBride. They said they had come to the islands with Bill Mulhearn and Walter Rolle to do a little pearl diving. We had to leave these friends, however, as we had phoned Charley to meet us in half an hour at Winnie Rawlinson's TeafRoom, where Nancy Rankine and Lillian Christy were head waitresses. Charley's liveried chauffeur, Earl Mason, and his footman, Henry Mason, soon ap' peared with the new Higgins Vfeight. We greeted our old friend Pres very cordially. With Charlie were two of his house guests, Doris Allen and Jim Armstrong. Jim is a senior partner in Armstrong, Draper, Crompton, and Crump Manufacturing Co., and was in the islands for a few weeks' vacation. CRANSTON O HIGH I SCHO0L --Q-ef 55 sb- sua 1939 En route to Charley's plantation, we stopped at the villa of American Consul Lee Durling. Lee, and his aides, Henry Colvin and Richard Dolloff, oversee the administrative function of the territory. It seemed that Lee was to entertain some of his American friends at a clambake that evening, and we were invited to stay. Bake'master John DeLuca served clams, selected and dug by Fred O'Connell, to Hope Barrie, Gladys Burns, Florence Zanella, Catherine Coleman, Marie Halloran, and Florence Cunha, all traveling in an equestrienne show. We finally arrived at Charley's, and were admitted by gatefkeeper Harry Hall. We were greeted from across the lawn by the gardener, Frank Cromwell, and farther on we could see Rocky Conklin tending his stable. We were greeted at the door by Jimmy Cole, head butler, whose staff included Anilda Buonanno, cookg Clara D'Arezz0, housekeeper, Laura DeAngelis and Gloria Ferri, maids. While away, Charley had had an invitation from George Fisette, manager of the Old Hawaii Theatre, to attend the opera that evening. We dressed immediately. When we arrived at the theatre, doorman Bill Carlson assisted us from the automobile. Barbara Kershaw was selling tickets to a large crowd. George met us at the door and Bob Nichols, head usher, showed us to our seats. To our surprise, seated in front of us were Helen Parillo, Suzanne Place, Barbara Potter, Angela Macera, and Gloria Yappelli, who confessed they were studying for the opera themselves. We didn't have time for further conversation because orchestra conductor Mario Paglarini was leading the boys into the overture. We saw that the concert master was none other than Eugene Melone, and Hap Palmer was comet soloist. The curtain rose on La Boheme, in which the part of Mimi was being sung by Barbara Hawkins. Her leading man was Alden Butler, and the supporting cast included Dorothea Weigand, Grace Schenk, Virginia Gomersall, Ethel DiMuccio, Virginia Marra, All Pedro, Robert Larocque, jim Whiting, and George Levy. Between the acts we met Barbara Eddy, Sarah DiBlasi, Shirley Drake, and Carolina Palmaccio, escorted respectively by George Came' ron, Roland Robinson, Ray Kendall, and Ray Josephson. After the performance, we went backstage and saw stage manager Warren Johnson talking to Olive Lancia and Kenny Lane, understudies. Technical engineers Arthur Holdsworth and Ward Hoxie were busily clearing the stage. After leaving the theatre, we stopped for refreshments at the Hawaiian Howard ,Iohnson's which is managed by Carl Johnson. The hostess was Abbie Hewes, and some of her waitresses were Rita Keenan, Kay Kavanaugh, Margie Winter, Claire Coty, Margaret Crowley and Hope Whiting. We rose early the next morning to pay our first visit to the fair. We were besieged by rickshaw boys, Ted Janicki and Alvin Johnson, but we preferred to walk. Our first stop was at the Building of Fine Arts, where we reviewed an exhibition conducted by Glennis Plympton. It consisted of many works by Gardner Leaver and Elsie Ronzio, painters, and Jane McGarry and Ruth Noble, sculptors. Next we visited the Scientific Building where we were attracted by the exhibits of Ralph Lord and Co., manufacturers of the famous Lord Vacuum Cleaner. Among the many inter- GRADUATING I CLASS O 0F ,W Eg -..ggf 56 Ha..- 1939 esting features were the models of modern trains designed by Frank Ronzio, prominent member of Carl Carlson's Institute of Technology. Strolling down the midway, we encountered Dorothy Emma, Helen Curren, Alice Harti' gan, Barbara Hard, and Kathryn Williams, who were on the way to the home economics building, and so we followed them. After a tour of the building, we attended the Carberry Stove Company's cooking exhibit. Lillian Burke, Olive Belair, and Margaret Bartolomeo were giving a cake demonstration, using Marjorie Saillant's Fluff Puff Flour. Nancy Gould, Virginia Good' by, Dorothy Valentine, Irene Wylie, and Evelyn Tedford served the spectators with samples of these cakes. In another room we found Rose Sahagian demonstrating Alain Sweeney's new sewing mach' ine. There was also a fashion show going on, with clothes designed by the famous Searle sisters. The models were Dot Anthony, Roberta Mackle, Lucy Duclos, Hope Donnelly, Ann Schneider, Louise Martin, Dot Hammond, Myrtle Rich, Virginia Gilmore, Alice Morin, and Janice Gifford. Viewing the show were Doris Morrocco, Margaret Murphy, Maria Pezza, Ada Johnson, Doro- thea James, and Cynthia Maroukian, all Parisian buyers who were sponsoring the show. For lunch we dropped in at Charlot Larkin's restaurant on the midway. Gladys Farnsworth, Evelyn Jones, Arthur Anderson, and Ernie Bottomley, all of whom worked somewhere at the fair, were seated at the table behind us. Reappearing on the midway, we ran into Ed Ashcroft and Mildred Ehrencrona, who were ref turning from the agricultural exhibit. They told us that Bill Hicks, Anthony Iannelli, and Peter Johnson had experimental grass plots there, and Bill Bennett, Edward Sawin, Alger Mitchell. and Frank Mancini were demonstrating new farm machinery. We ended our day's visit at the medical center where Monica Colgan, Elaine Cook, Mildred Hawksley, Ruth Gay, June Gardner, Marie Forster, and Roberta Sweeney were nurses, practicf ing under the direction of Dr. Ralph Wicks. We are back at Charley's now where we first began to write this letter to you. We hope that you have enjoyed reading this epistle as much as we have delighted in writing it. It cerf tainly proves that this is a small world, doesn't it? Most sincerely, ALICE KENNY, EDXVARD THOMAS, EARLE NASON, chairman. THE Cranston High School Parent Teacher Association draws to the close of its 19th active year. It has tried to live up to the objects for which it was founded, to promote child welfare in home, school, church and community and has planned its programs accordingly. It is the largest high school unit in the state and has again during this year had a substantial increase in membership. The budget planned and accepted at the October meeting included student aid, school wel- fare fund, honor pins for the February and June clases, box for 'Cranston Night', advertisement in Cranstonian, Thanksgiving basket fund. Additional funds were later voted for Thanksgiving baskets, and for Christmas stockings Of candy to accompany the toys collected and distributed by the Girls' Leader Corps. The unit also provided the refreshments for the February entering class when they were shown through the school by the Student Council. As a school activity, the dancing class sponsored by the Parent Teacher Association has been a success, both socially and financially. During the year three informal and two formal parties were held. The meeting of most interest to the school, was perhaps, the April one, directed by Miss Ruth C. Cowles. A Supper for one hundred was prepared and served by the members of the Home Economics Department, after which, at the regular meeting a pantomime entitled The Life of a Worthy Home Member, was presented by the department. At this meeting, as in all of the meetings, the music was under the direction of Miss Anna Mclnerney, who presented many ex- cellent musicians from her school groups. The unit has opened its meetings to students interested in the current topics of the program, and has encouraged the announcement of student activities by school members themselves. To Mr. C. Herbert Taylor and Mr. Silas T. Nye, Principals of our schools, and to the faculty of both of these schools, we extend our sincere gratitude for their cofoperation. The Cranston High School Parent Teacher Association extends congratulations to the mem' bers of the 1939 graduating classes, and wishes them Godspeed on their Road of Life. PAULINE S. Varsity Cgdootfball Hearty congratulations are due this year to Coach Stebbins and his squad of fighting foot' ball players. This year's team overcame almost insurmountable obstacles. Every player on last year's team graduated except Capt. Russ Anderson. In the first game, Bob Babcock, a promising fullback, received a broken leg. However, instead of taking down the flag, as it were, the Green Thunderbolt came through the last three games with consecutive shutouts over their opponents, ending the season like champions! Although no one placed on the Allfstate Team, particularly fine work was done by Capt. Russ Anderson, Ray Larson, and Georgie Warburton in the line, and Don Dwyer, George Pulliam, and Wally Davis in the backfield.
