In 1942, she was given to Great Britain and renamed HMS BRIGHTON. The present COWELL was commissioned in August 1943, in San Pedro, California and joined the Pacific Fleet. ' Engagements with japanese forces were many, for the COWFLL participated in every major oper- ation conducted after january 1944. Notable among these were air and surface strikes against the Marianas, New Guinea, Formosa, and the Phillippines. Cited for her performance during the Okinawan campaign, the COWFLL received the Presidential Unit Citation. Her guns destroyed twenty enemy aircraft. The COWELL remained as a unit of the occupa- tion forces prior to her returning to the United States for inactivation in july 1946. She was re- commissioned in july 1951, for service with the Seventh Fleet in Korean waters during the winter of 1953, where operations against enemy troops, ammunition depots, and land communications were conducted. In February 1963, the COWELL became a unit of Destroyer Division 132.
