'11 JQN' . ??g A4 fsffpgfii f HISTORY HISTORY OF DD -547 The original COWELL, a four piper destroyer, fought in World War One. In 1942, she was given to Great Britain and renamed HMS BRIGHTON. The present COWELL was commissioned in August 1943, in San Pedro, California and joined the Pacific Fleet. ' Engagements with japanese forces were many, for the COWFLL participated in every major oper- ation conducted after january 1944. Notable among these were air and surface strikes against the Marianas, New Guinea, Formosa, and the Phillippines. Cited for her performance during the Okinawan campaign, the COWFLL received the Presidential Unit Citation. Her guns destroyed twenty enemy aircraft. The COWELL remained as a unit of the occupa- tion forces prior to her returning to the United States for inactivation in july 1946. She was re- commissioned in july 1951, for service with the Seventh Fleet in Korean waters during the winter of 1953, where operations against enemy troops, ammunition depots, and land communications were conducted. In February 1963, the COWELL became a unit of Destroyer Division 132. ,W n f I 1 ' . Q 'I M , - - I ,ii 1-A., mst, i ' ff. I ,, A Between the security of childhood and the insecurity of the second childhood, we find afascinating group of humanity called the Sailor , They are in assorted sizes, weights, and states of soberity, and can be found anywhere on ships, at shore, stations, in bars, on leave, in love, and always in debt. Girls love them, towns tolerate diem, and the govem- ment supports them, A Sailor is laziness with a deck of cards, bravery with a tatooed arm, and the protector of the seas with a copy of Playboy . He has the energy of a turtle, the slyness of a fox, the brains of a liar, the aspirations of casanova, and when he wants something it is usually connected with a liberty card. Some of his likes are: women, girls, females, dames, and the opposite sex. I-Ie dislikes answer- ing letters, wearing his uniform, officers, chow, and getting up on time. No one else can cram into one jumper pocket.: a little black book, a pack of crushed Luckies , Kim Novac's picture, Aa comb, a church key, and the remainder of last month's pay. He likes to spend some of his pay on girls, some on poker, and the rest foolishly. A Sailor is a magic creature, you can lock him out of your home, but not out of your heart. You can scratch him off your mailing list, but not off your mind. You might as well give up, he is your long-away from home lover, and your one and only bleary eyed good-for-nothing bundle of worry. But all your shattered dreams become insignificant when your sailor docks, and looks at you with those bleary blood-shot eyes and says, I-Ii Ya Honey I'm Home . , DEPARTMENT HEADS WEAPONS LT. W. 0.
