USS C4 Dn- Shgeb gfwtofag The USS COWELL, a sleek 2100 ton Fletcher class destroyer was commissioned on August 23, 1943 at Bethlehem ship building corporation, San Pedro, Califor- nia. Her first Commanding Officer was Cdr. Charles W. Parker. After completing her shake down training in October she was assigned to the Pacific Fleet. Her first major action in the war was taken during the winter of 1944 when she participated in the bombardment of the islands, Kwajalein and Truk. In lVlay she returned to these islands acting as part of a task force having control of CAP air- craft. On one occasion the COWELL was able wto give warning that a large enemy air striking force was closing for attack. The task force having been sufficiently alerted, destroyed 109 enemy aircraft. In March of 1945, the COWELL act- ing as a radar picket ship in the Okinawa campaign, shot down 10 enemy aircraft. Six suicide planes crashed so close :that debris landed about ship. For her ac- tions at Okinawa she was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. Her engagement with Japanese forces were ,many for she participated in every major operation after January 1944. In July of 1946 the COWELL was in- activated. She was reactivated five years later for duty during the Korean conflict. V On August 1957 her present Command- ing Officer, Commander R. B. Ricks, as- sumed command. ln August of 1958 the COWELL left Long Beach for her fourth cruise in WESTPAC as a unit of DesDiV 192.
