FOREWORD lt is with a great deal of pleasure that I can take this oppor- tunity to comment briefly on the things that help make up this cruise book. During the period when many of these pictures and enjoyable events were taking place there were times when danger, discom- fort and frustration seemed overpowering. There were nights when severe weather conditions required an all-out fight for sur- vival. There were occasions when human ingenuity and endur- ance were taxed to the maximum in order to maintain the rapid tempo of operations. Thus the good times reflected herein do not tell the whole story. Only as a result of the personal courage, skill and devotion exhibited by each man, could this cruise have been so successful. . 'R.
