The facilities provide for a full program of school services: classrooms and laboratory instruction, shop practice, agricultural experimentation, homemaking practice, commercial training, research and study, health service, food service, field play and practice, student activities, conference and administration. The yellow brick exterior walls are enhanced by aluminum window frames and sashes along with the hollow metal, plate glass exterior doors. Walking down the corridor and into any of the classrooms, one would notice the asphalt tile and plastic tile floors, the flush veneered wood doors, beige yellow tile window stools, and the slate blackboards, with aluminum trim. Intricacies of the wiring system make possible the restful day-brite lighting, seen in all the classrooms, fire alarm, the electronic bell and clock system, emergency lighting, the much-used public address system, and gymnasium scoreboard. Outside again, we find con- crete walkways, bituminous driveways and parking areas. The contractors for this massive edifice were: Raymond R. Hedden Co. General John F. Miles Heating G. M. Bergan Plumbing Howard P. Foley Electrical The overall cost of the building was S1,340,000. C 52:11 Ll. I..I ' I I I E I I i ', I I It Ly AR? Mack, Pres.g Gertrude Caffo, Sec. Few people have had the pleasure of opening a new school building. This year the faculty and the students have enjoyed that rare privilege and are greatly pleased with the beauty and the usefulness of our fine new Cowanesque Valley Junior-Senior High School building. The schoolhouse is a place for many kinds of learningg the schoolhouse itself is an instrument of education. It can teach American youth much of beauty, of useful ordering of space, and of the possibilities of harmonious living. There is increasing recognition of the school building as a place that will help youth to grow to their best physically as well as mentally. Their seeing, their posture, their nutrition, and every bodily process should be helped toward that ideal by the conditions of life at our new school. The elders of our school districts have supplied you with a modern high school. It is their fervent hope that your graduating class and coming graduating classes will exceed their own in wisdom and judgment. ICR X 1 CLASS ADVISURS To the Graduating Class of 1959: I extend my warm and sincere congratu- lations. Since you are my first graduating class I take special pleasure and increased pride in presenting you to an extremely troubled and angry world. For with you, the citizenry of tomorrow, lies my faith, faith that you and your lcind will extinguish the fires of hatred, build the bridges of cooperation and under- standing. Your task is exceedingly difficult but, I feel assured that your presence, abili- ties, and efforts will make this world a far better place in which to live. ,,, an To Members of the 1959 Class: The cornerstone of peace and worldly living is knowledge and understanding. As the people of the world become more enlightened, our responsibilities to others become of greater proportions. As enlightened people of the world, we should learn to tolerate other people's ideas and customs. The true road to world peace is by understanding other people's prob- lems, conditions of living, and their needs, and extending to them fellowship, useful mater- ials and practices of American heritage, all of which we have been blessed with abundantly. Perhaps, with lasting peace in the world, you will enjoy the tolerance and success in life as the true dream of reality in worldly living. .CZJCEQ CLASS UF 1959 Leo Parsons, Pres.g Wayne Clark, Vice Pres.g Sonya Rumsey, Sec.g Ellen Steadman, Hist.g Carol Eaton, Treasurer. Let's see what the Student Council is and what it does. The Student Council is a group of students, 23 ordinary students with 2 advisors, organized to discuss and find solutions to problems that surround us every day at CVJS. The Student Council for the year 58-59 has sponsored many activitiesg 1. Special Assembly programs to add to your knowledge of the outside world. 2. Pennant sales to promote school spirit. 3. The handling of school elections, incluing that of cheerleaders. 4. Conferring with the administration on matters affecting the student body. 5. Sponsoring The Smoke Signals' write-up in local newspapers plus many other activities. UUNBIL C. Berdanier, Advisory B. Broadbent, Treasurerg S. Riepple,Secretaryg L. Flint, Vice Presidentg C. Eaton, Presidentg C. Burtch, Advisor. Yes, the Student Council represents You. The Student Council is You. You are the share- holders in the corporationg they are merely the officers. They don't make amove without your interests in mind. They don't want profit for themselvesgthey want it for you, but they can't work without your support and cooperation. Don't just elect your representatives but stand behind the ones you elect. Contribute your ideas for improvement that will help to promote school spirit. Help your Student Council and they are sure to help you. We deem it a great privilege to have had the honor of serving you as your elected repre- sentatives during the first term of the operation of our beautiful new school. We have faith that succeeding Student Councils will carry on the tradition of service to the school. To them we bequeath the responsibility and honor of keeping standards high. 'MM 1? wifi 'Mar ' THE 1958 SOCCER SQUAD A strong squad of skillfull-footed soccer players completed an undefeated season, finishing in second place for the second consecutive year. Two ties led to CV's runner- up position ln league standings. The squad had an explosive attack matched with an equally strong defensive unit that led to the final record of 5 wins, 2 ties, and 0 losses. The offensive unit booted home 25 goals and the defense allowed the ball to cross the line only 5 times. The team has a two year record of 9 wins, 4 tie games, and only 1 loss under the coaching of Mr. Rumsey., Although graduation will take six starters, the defense unit will remain intact and with returning lettermen plus a crop of newcomersf they should blend into a fine team for the coming year. Little, D. Mack, R. Nelson, R. Lamphier, R. Bartoo, The Cowanesque Valley baseball team had a very successful season in 1958 and are looking forward to another good season this spring. The overall record last spring was six wins and two losses with C. V. finishing in a tie for second place. Members of last year's team who will not be back this season will be graduates Claud Marsh, Gary Bartoo, and Fred Allen, and Dennis Hoa.k who moved away. Returning lettermen include pitchers Jay Weidman and Roger James, infielders Dwight Mack and Richard Moon and outfielders Leo Parsons, Roy Nelson, Billy Moon and Danny Fitzwater. The catcher and shortstop positions appear to be the weak spots in this years team. If these positions can be adequately filled, C. V. should once again have a team that will give a good account of itself in every game. Q .A-,X 'Ulf' V . .4-... ,ui-.,, ,w ,u- .'-4 :if W ,- 'x 9: It Q3 Ti w Cole, S. Seelye, B.. Fitzwater, M. NDWLEDGEMENTS We, the Senior Class of 1959, wish to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who has made our '59 Cowanesquean possible. We hope that this yearbook has been a fitting tribute to their efforts on our behalf and also to those who have made it possible for us to graduate from the fine new high school. We wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Andre for his patient guidance and valuable advice. To Joe Kast, our photographer, goes our gratitude and thanks for his help to our photographic department. To our numerous friends and patrons, we thank you for your aid and encouragement. Last, but not least, we want to express our appreciation to the faculty for their co-operation and help without which this book could not have been completed. To each and all, thank you.
