Class History In September, 1953, our class entered the Freshman year at Cowanesque Valley Joint School. This year we had Mr. Smith and Mr. Painter to guide us. On October 23rd we sponsored the Freshman Hop and had as our band Mr. Smith and his Dixielanders, made up of our high school musicians. Through the rest of the year we had few activities but ended with a class party at Lucille P1ank's farm. Mean- while our Knoxville classmates to be were celebrating with many class parties and adding more to our treasury. Next came our Sophomore year when Knoxville joined us. This year we elected Mary Lyn Erwin as President, Jim Seagers as Vice President, Beth Holland as Treasurer, Gail Fitzwater as Secretary, and Jane Kilburn as Historian, with Mr. Smith and Mr. Heyler to back them. This year we sponsored Mr. Smith's Tap Time and put on the Alu.mni Dance with music by the Keynotes. We folmd ourselves with several Sophomores on the Basketball squad and Gail Fitzwater as a J. V. Cheerleader. We were about to close for the summer but not before a glorious day at Eldridge Pa.rk. We now devoted ourselves to our Jlmior Year which we knew was going to be a great success. Our membership had gone down to 61 and we found that two of our classmates -- Jim Thorne and Lois Sea- 11:2-ISS were married. Also, that Ken and Gene Davis had moved. But we welcomed Brad Rice from Ek- We again elected Mary Lyn Erwin as President, John Hegmann Vice President, Anava Watkins as Sec- retary, Bill Allen, Treasurer, and Carol Davis as Historian. In October we started our card sales and went into this with great enthusiasm. To wind up the Hrst semester we sponsored a Christmas Dance at Knoxville. After the holidays we started on what we hoped to be a big success--our Gay 90's Show. After months of hard work, on March 22nd and 23rd we presented the production. It was acclaimed by a huge audience both nights. Next we helped the Seniom with graduation, followed by the Alumni Ban- quet and dance. Thus we concluded an exciting Junior year with the Junior-Senior picnic at Ole Bull Park. We had entered this long awaited Senior year with two thoughts--to have a last wonderful time to- gether aud to cram in all the bits of knowledge we had missed before. We elected as Class Prsident Mary Lyn Erwin and to aid her as Vice President Anava Watkins, Secretary Charley Boom, Treasurer Jane Kilbum and Historian Carol Davis. We faced the year ahead with the sudden deaths of Sammy Kizer and Ed Stenner. We also found that Durrell Houghtaling, Marie Cady, Jane Womer, and Margaret Miles are married. Sara Hazlett has moved to Buffalo, and Jim Seagers is attending a military school at Manlius, N. Y. Yet we are very lmppy to welcome to our little band Mary lou Buell from Winsor, N.Y. We started our Senior year selling magazines, cards and having record dances. In November we sponsored the Harvest Dance with Charley Boom and Carol Davis elected King and Queen. We were represented by Anava Watkins and Gail Fitzwater as cheerleaders, with Gail as captain of varsity. Charley Boom, Bill Allen, and Gene Lamphier made up our Senior basketball squad. We have ordered our caps and gowm and the yearbook under the successful management of Beth Hol- land and Homer Bebout is completed. We are now looking excitedly toward graduation, Washington, and the future that lies ahead. 30
