V- 1-5 A ,M ,wg semorzs Mr. LESTER SMITH Provided we make use of our abilities to better the lives of others, regardless of our field of endeavor, we can truly makethis a civilization that will advance all others in scientific accom- plishment. Man, through Science, has won wars, advanced to outer space, gone faster than sound, syn- cronized light and sound waves in- to T. V. all within a few years time. Soon we will live in plastic houses, have cars that drive them- selves, turn sunlight into electric- ity and can probably live to be a hundred. You and I will live in the best age of all time so let us always keep a young outlook on life, for we are as young as our hopes, as old as our despair. The Triple Alliance The class officers with the help of our advisors, Mr. Smith and Mr. Heyler, have guided the Class of 5'7 through card sales, plays, anoimcements and other crises to graduation. Up to the present time much of your workhas been planned by others. You are now approaching a point when more and more of the decisions and plan- ning for the future will be up to you. Although your jobs may sometimes be difficult , plan so that you may do a good piece of work for there is a certain reward that comes from something well done. May each and everyone use your talents and training for the betterment of yourselves as well as your fellowman. DAVID MARK ANTHONY Sunshine WILLIAM C. Class Motto IN OURSELVES THE FUTURE LIES Class Flower RED ROSE Cla: Colors BLACK and WHITE 24 On this page are objects which have traditionally symbolized gradua- tion. For some, graduation means the end of school fellowship, or possibly joy at the termination of rigid class schedules. Yet, graduation to most means more than this, for along with the new-found freedom comes a challenge, a chal- lengc of responsibility that we must fulfill, a challenge of opportunities that must be grasped. So, this book is a recording of cherished events of the past. These symbols unlock the door to what lies ahead. Yesterday And Tomorrow 53.315 X , ws F QF ' G fi N ' s . U' N Class History In September, 1953, our class entered the Freshman year at Cowanesque Valley Joint School. This year we had Mr. Smith and Mr. Painter to guide us. On October 23rd we sponsored the Freshman Hop and had as our band Mr. Smith and his Dixielanders, made up of our high school musicians. Through the rest of the year we had few activities but ended with a class party at Lucille P1ank's farm. Mean- while our Knoxville classmates to be were celebrating with many class parties and adding more to our treasury. Next came our Sophomore year when Knoxville joined us. This year we elected Mary Lyn Erwin as President, Jim Seagers as Vice President, Beth Holland as Treasurer, Gail Fitzwater as Secretary, and Jane Kilburn as Historian, with Mr. Smith and Mr. Heyler to back them. This year we sponsored Mr. Smith's Tap Time and put on the Alu.mni Dance with music by the Keynotes. We folmd ourselves with several Sophomores on the Basketball squad and Gail Fitzwater as a J. V. Cheerleader. We were about to close for the summer but not before a glorious day at Eldridge Pa.rk. We now devoted ourselves to our Jlmior Year which we knew was going to be a great success. Our membership had gone down to 61 and we found that two of our classmates -- Jim Thorne and Lois Sea- 11:2-ISS were married. Also, that Ken and Gene Davis had moved. But we welcomed Brad Rice from Ek- We again elected Mary Lyn Erwin as President, John Hegmann Vice President, Anava Watkins as Sec- retary, Bill Allen, Treasurer, and Carol Davis as Historian. In October we started our card sales and went into this with great enthusiasm. To wind up the Hrst semester we sponsored a Christmas Dance at Knoxville. After the holidays we started on what we hoped to be a big success--our Gay 90's Show. After months of hard work, on March 22nd and 23rd we presented the production. It was acclaimed by a huge audience both nights. Next we helped the Seniom with graduation, followed by the Alumni Ban- quet and dance. Thus we concluded an exciting Junior year with the Junior-Senior picnic at Ole Bull Park. We had entered this long awaited Senior year with two thoughts--to have a last wonderful time to- gether aud to cram in all the bits of knowledge we had missed before. We elected as Class Prsident Mary Lyn Erwin and to aid her as Vice President Anava Watkins, Secretary Charley Boom, Treasurer Jane Kilbum and Historian Carol Davis. We faced the year ahead with the sudden deaths of Sammy Kizer and Ed Stenner. We also found that Durrell Houghtaling, Marie Cady, Jane Womer, and Margaret Miles are married. Sara Hazlett has moved to Buffalo, and Jim Seagers is attending a military school at Manlius, N. Y. Yet we are very lmppy to welcome to our little band Mary lou Buell from Winsor, N.Y. We started our Senior year selling magazines, cards and having record dances. In November we sponsored the Harvest Dance with Charley Boom and Carol Davis elected King and Queen. We were represented by Anava Watkins and Gail Fitzwater as cheerleaders, with Gail as captain of varsity. Charley Boom, Bill Allen, and Gene Lamphier made up our Senior basketball squad. We have ordered our caps and gowm and the yearbook under the successful management of Beth Hol- land and Homer Bebout is completed. We are now looking excitedly toward graduation, Washington, and the future that lies ahead. 30 Last Will And Testament We, the Class of Fifty-Seven, Cowanesque Valley High School, WestEeld, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this our last Will and Testa- ment. We have our radio turned to the Grand Ol' Opry, and hear SHIRL MOON singing her latest hit song, Green Patent Leather Shoes which literally sent Elvis Presley back to truck driving! Oops! Better slow down! Here comes State Policeman, EUGENE IAMPHIER, on his motorcycle. We learn later at VIRGINIA MOON'S diner, THE GREASY SPOON , that he was on his way to check on WALTER ROSS who was speeding around in his new racer--creating a trafic hazard as usual! While we are eating lunch at Ginny's, NATALIE LARRISON walks in with her twin boys. Looks like Nat got her other ring! From Nat we learn that ROSE TAFT and her husband own a horse ranch out West. They employ ROSE WOOD as trainer. As we leave the Diner, we see a low flying jet. Well, look at the handsome pilot--SIR DALE GUNN , Fsquire! We hear that he took the silo right off CHARLIE BOOM'S farm. RONNIE HATCHER, CARROLL DOAN, and ARTHUR SCHMIDT, also farmers, give Charlie all their support in suing Dale for damages. As we walk down the street, we see .1 Beauty Salon, owned and operated by ELSIE POTTER. DONNA CARD and SHIRLEY GRAFF work UQ as her assistants. SHARON CARR advertises Carr's HAPPY CHAPPY HAND LOTION, guaranteed to chap, crack, and dry your skin. Well, who is this? GAYLE LF.ICHl.ITF.R is coming in for a shampoo and manicure. Gayle is now a model on the BIG SHOW OFF . She mentions that MAUREEN LOVEL has her own Comedy Show, BLUE BONES fwhat happened to Red Skelton?j, which features DAVID ANTHONY as dancer. BARBARA TUBBS, Maureen's secretary, is in Bellevue Hospital recover- ing from a fit of laughter, as a result of typing Maureen's script! We visit Barb and are amazed to see GENE STAFFORD in an interns uniform Qcould it be that he will be a Doc after all?I He tells us that BRENDA BUFFARD is well on her way to becoming head phwical therapist. ls that why they call her Bender '? ANN WATKINS and GAII. FITZWATER have become top medical secretaries and are planning to return to our hometown soon. Due to a booming new business, owned by BILL ALLEN, assisted bg-:ngineers JOHN HFGMANN and HOMER BEBOUT, Westfield is now large enough to support a Travel Bureau. As we enter it, we d JANE KIIBURN making reservations for her next trip a- broad. JOYCE YAMER is reservationist. During our conversation with Joyce, we learn that MAX ATWELL has a fine job as sec- retary for a Knitting Mill owned and operated by BRAD RICE. He went crazy over needles and Home Ec. teachers! To our amazement we see around the corner a large, beautiful Mansion! No! ! It's the Cowanesque Valley Joint High School of 1967, COMPLETED ONLY A WEEK AGO. Back of the school we see a large playground full of many screeching children, and in their group a fiustered teacher. Why it's PEG SMITH! She is now scolding a small blond boy, who is one of CAROL DOREMUS'S fDAVlSy six boys. Peggy tells us that BETH HOLLAND and RUBY SKINNER head the Home Ee. Department. Teaching English are MARY LYN ERWIN and ANN CUNNINGHAM. MARY LOU BUELL helps in kindergarten. MARY ANN DOUGLASS is fourth grade teacher, and LOIS WATKINS is basketball coach! ! ! We go into the school and to the door marked 0f:Ece . We knock lightly and a familiar voice tells us to come in. VVhen we open the door, we see LUCY PLANK sitting behind a typewriter, on her desk a sign reads SCHOOL SECRETARY. We learn that MARY FORSBERG is the school nurse, after chatting awhile we decide to leave. As we do so we recognize the janitor to be BOB MILLER. As we drive back to town, we run out of gas. So, we stop at a local service station and ind that GENE KOLESAR has the same old job--piunping gas. He tells us that JON WIl.LlAMS and l.LOYD TREAT are making a career of the Army, and DALE DRAUCKER of the Navy. Back in town we notice a new Dress Shoppe by the name of FLORIES . Could it be that FLORA CARY is the owner? We in- vestigate and find that LOIS DRAKE is clerk. She tells us that ESTHER BRUGGER is still in college--she took a long elementary course ! On an electric pole we see a political poster. From that we learn that NANCY VAUGHAN is currently running for Senator on the DEMOCRAT Ticket. Pity the Republicans! ! We pick up a local newspaper and learn that EVELYN DRAPER is doing fine work as a Hotel Chamber Maid Qhousekeeperj. LINDA RUSHMORE works for the bank Qhow long before it will go bankrupt?j GENE WHITE is street cleaner, and as a hobby he manufactures motors that are run by Sugar Jets. As we learn all this of our old classmates we also learn that Mr. SMITH has resigned teaching Qwhen the Physic's Class blew the comer off the new building making Ice Cream, he thought that that was too n1uch!j. Mr. HEYLER has produced enough new hybrid plants to retire and is now devoting all his time to his chickens. 32 CLASSES Q mix 0115 yr.. 416 The Class Allen Altman Baker Bieser Bessemer Bochnewch Butler C an Chase Church Dibble Earl Farnsworth Gle ason Graff Haines B. With half of the Sopho- mores working toward Junior degrees and also several Juniors earning their Chapter degrees. They were represented by Carol Davis who earned her State Homemaker Degree. The Home Ec. girls are divided into 3 or 4 sections a semester, working on rugs, sewing, cooking, canning, and good grooming. As a result several projects were sent to the Farm Show and Mansfield Fair. This year was certainly a successful one for the entire class. F. H. A. After one year and certain accomplishments they can become Chapter farm ers. This year two of our members, Charley Boom and Carroll Doan, were selected as State Farmers.
