Glass Prvphec The day had been qurte cloudy and cool and I hurned home from the office at the end of the day glad to return to my comfortable nook rn the wall and enJoy a cup of hot coffee In the past erght years, I had come a long way in the busmess world As I settled rn my comfortable chair rn front of the fire with the evemng paper rn front of me I became aware that my sleepy gaze was drrected to the faces of a young grrl and a smiling boy and then to more grrls and more boys It was the graduating class from one of the crty schools and rt reminded me of my own graduation class of 1959 Suddenly on the shrnrng surface of the wrndow across the room from me I saw the rmage of the blonde haired grrls Joyce Krrby and Sharon Fowler They were dressed rn smart fashronable surts and pretty hats Undoubtedly they were the home economics teachers they had always dreamed of being As they passed from my srght I rubbed my eyes dazedly thrnkrng perhaps that they were playing tricks on me But wartl Down the street I saw my old frrend Martha Wray No rt was not Martha Wray any longer but Mrs John Mooneyham for there beside her was her handsome husband and followrng them were their s1.x children all rrls Next I saw Professor Kelly Morrrs and Reverend Robert Chapman walkrng along the street wrth a bouquet of roses rn their hands No doubt they were going callrng on therr old flames Annelle QMasony Brown and Sue Wrllrams I had heard that each had been married four times and all their husbands had died from shock Across the street rn the wrndow of the opposite burldrng, I saw a window washer he lost first his brush then hrs bucket and all of a sudden he lost hrs balance I heard a great splatter rn the street below and then I knew it had been nice knowing Jimmy As I stared at the hazy wrndow I saw the swrngrng doors of the Thomas and Brown saloon owned by Lrllre Mae Brown and Wanda Thomas Near by was the Darry Bar owned by Peggy Lenox and Elarne Hardy As the door of the saloon flew open McCoy Wray came sarlrng through feet first McCoy as become a great farmer and had come to town to lrve rt up I had heard that the red heads Margaret Breeding and Emma Newman were workrng in the saloon A bakery truck whrzzed by the wrndow and I saw the rnscrrptron Thomason Bak ery on the side Connre had made a lot of money at hrs trade but he strll spent a lo of time at hrs hobby of fxshrng He ran a trot lrne under a draw brrdge rn hrs spare time That way he didn t do any hard work He tied the lrne to each side of the brrdge and every time the brrdge was raised rt would pull the lrne out of the water and he could see rf there were any frsh on the lrne Connre always drd go out of his way to get out of a lrttle work I Jumped up and started toward the window A man was walkrng by and he ap peared to have no ears then I remembered Kenneth Kent had Just set hrs new bar ber shop in the business section of town S' - vigorously wielding a scrub brush. It was my old friend, Jimmy Moore. As I watched,

Soon no doubt the new look would be to have no ears lt was not long untrl I saw a stately dlgmfled young woman bedecked lrberally wrth dramonds orchrds and beautrful furs walk by the wrndow In her arms she car ned a sprndle delrcate poodle dog that resembled Maggre s ln the paper She was the rrch Mrss Lrnda Jennmgs whose rlch uncle had just dred and left her a huge estate and the poodle dog Next I saw a nchly dressed lady pass by wlth a large stack of sheet musrc rn her hands and her face looked famtllar to me Why lt was Mane Moon At last she must be the famous srnger that she had always practrced so much for Personally I always thought sounded lrke a cat caught rn a revolvrng door but a lot of people seemed to thmk she had talent for musrc were basketball players headed fm the annual tournaments That made me remember Gene Lenox a long ago frrend of mme who had always dreamed of berng the dog catcher rn the town of Cotaco As I watched the bus go out of srght I saw a btg Packard glrde down the street Naturally I stared to see who was dr1v1ng Why ll was the recently elected Governor of Alabama Ted Jennrngs Wxth htm was hrs attractrve wrfe She turned her head rn my drrectron and I saw rt really was a former classmate of mrne Llnda Brown The wlndow curtaru fluttered and settled back rn place The w1nd swrrled up leaves 1n the street and dred away I got up and went to the wrndow The street was deserted There was no srgn of a wrndow washer or a basketball team or a poodle dog Why I must have been dreamrng after all ! QQ D Class Pgnhetesses M I saw a bus full of boys go by, and from the flying banners I could tell that they Sue Williams and Annelle Mason Brown
