Track With the loss of some exceptional ath- letes, the boys and girls track team have a difficult season ahead of them, but they be- lieve they can overcome the odds. As head coach John Carney said, We may start off slow but the team as a whole has great po- tential and may do well near the end of the season. The Mesans have gained confideoe and are looking foward to a promising sea- son. They showed their true desire by easily defeating Magnolia High School 69-55. The boys weight team is led by Jim Weissinger, Sean McMillan, and Robert Dearborn. The sprinters are led by seniors Matt Grant and Terry Bryant, who should do well in the 440 and 220 meter races, as well as Manny Bon- ilia in the 100. Junior David Burnell is ex- pected to break some school records in the hurdles. Craig Cleaver is the exceptional ath- lete in the pole vault. Bill Wettengel is coach- ing the girls to what he believes will be a new C.I.F. birth. The 100 and 200 meter races are dominated by freshman Daniel Coleman. In the hurdles division, Denise Surmon lead the crew followed by Staci Emerson and Carrie Cunnings. Michelle Bryant, Sherry Poin- dexter, Cathy Halley, and Renee (Jpdegraft help out in the middle to long distance races. Juniors Dori Beeler and Heather Feld are the new hopefuls in the shot-put and discus. With the strong determination that both teams possess, success is in the near future. Student Trivia- Which person here doesn t run hurdles? Mow is the time to stop. 74Sports THE COSTA MESA HIGH SCHOOL TRACK TEAM
