JV Soccer Led by coach Bill Smith, the JV Soccer team had a tough year. They started out the season with a 4-1 record before the team suffered fro m several setbacks. They lost five players to transfer- ring or getting moved up the var- sity team. As a consequence, they only won two more games the remainder of the year. Coach Smith said, If we hadn ' t lost those players, we would have had a chance. V 4 i, M n j H ' 2 m Tl 1 S3 5 wT ! H JAi. Varsity Soccer The varsity soccer team at the be- ginning of the season knew what they were up against not having won a league match in two years. That was all to change on February 3, 1988 when the Mustangs, behind a team effort, gave coach Pierre Al- legre, his first league win ever with a 2-1 decision over Woodbridge. Led by Ceasar Zamarripas, 16 goalie saves, and Matt Martineze ' s winning goal, they pulled out the victory. The tough defense of Doug Smith and the offensive attack of Ryan Giles and Jason Trask also contri- buted greatly. As a fan and onlooker of the team, I believe they played an exciting, physical brand of soccer which was enjoyed by those who watched. Their overall record was 2- 18. Wrestling Despite the extreme lack of members, the Costa Mesa High Wrestling team won its first dual meet in three years. The Mustang graplers defeated Trabuco Hills High School by a score of 33-36. However, it was the only dual meet the team won this year. The team faced many setbacks through- out the year. Their biggest problem was the lack of experienced wrestlers on the squad. The team had only one senior and two ju- niors. Another significant setback was that many of the team members quit due to per- sonal reasons, which hurt the team ' s chances to effectively compete against other schools. At the league championship tournament only two Mustangs placed. Chris Brex took thrid place while Team Captain Chris Seeber took second and thus earned the right to compete in the C.I.F. tournament. As for the J.V. team, standouts included John Valencia and Steve Mellinger, who each placed second at their respective weights — 115 and 175. Left to right; M. Walker. E. Amneus, C. Stewart, J.
