The girls Varsity basketball team, with James Weeks at the helm, en- tered the 1987-88 season with C.I.F. playoff hopes, but that hope came to an end with a disappointing 37-30 playoff loss to Laguna Beach. They finished the season by coming in tied for third with a 5-5 league re- cord and 6-17 overall. The overall record was deceiving because the Varsity team played tough competi- tion, like C.I.F. Champions El Toro and Mission Viejo. Underclassmen led the team, with Mo Moore and Kim Good at the head of the pack. Heighth was a major problem this year, with Sue Nuechterlein being the tallest player at 5 ' 10 . Because of the significant lack of height, the three point line was used by the lady mustangs. They averaged more points from behind the three point line than underneath the basket. Gunners from behind the line were Vanessa Henderson, Kim Good, and Dawn Hoffman. As Coach Weeks put it, We shot better from three point range than inside six feet As the team players learned this ar, when you shoot bad, it ' s hard to win. Girls Basketball The 1987-88 girls J.V. basketball team had a remarkable season- taking a record of 10-0 and placing first in league. They started off the season by easily winning their first three games against Laguna Beach, Woodbridge. and Trabuco Hills. Surprisingly, they had no returning players. Shannon Austin and Leann Ma led the way with their aggressive play under the basket, while freshman point guard Rachel Thomas kept Mesa ' s offense under control. All team members worked very hard, with a goal of being league champions. They did not let us down, but carried on the tradition of winning the Pacific Coast League title undefeated, now for the fourth consecutive year. Led by Coach Pat Leahy, the girls Freshman Sophomore team yet again had an excellent season. With much team spirit and determination to win, the girls proved to be a tough competitor. They played Varsity, J.V., and Freshman teams alike. Respectively, they ended the season with a 6-5 league record. They never lost the desire to win. With thirteen freshman players and no returning players, this ranking is even more astonishing. All team members were very dedicated and equally contributed to a successful season. ■I Top: S Austin, M . Bryant, K. Meyers , R. Thomas, V. Cao. | Front: L. Ma, T. Nguyen, T. Pham. S. Bush, S.
