Jeff with the easy two. This year ' s Sophomore team pulled a 5- 15 overall record behind the inside play of Kevin Leahy and Justin Yockel and guard play of Hugh Nguyen and Bret Dieball. Two of the wins came from the sweep over Laguna Hills. They were coached by Don Ma. Led by coach Kirk Bauermeister, the freshman basketball team pulled out a 5-5 league record to place third and 7-9 over- all. A balanced attack led by all five start- ers was the key to victory. These talented freshman should do well as Sophomores. Sports-57

JV Basketball What are you waiting for? The finger role! JV Boys This year ' s JV basketball team, led by first year coach Dean Cooper, did a fantastic job. They had the best record in the program going 8-8 overall and 4-6 in league play. They were lead by the inside play of Jose Casas and Steve Kunst. The team was in every game they played and were very competitive. They didn ' t look pretty sometimes getting the W but they did it and that ' s what counts. Next year ' s varsity should be in good hands with these young men moving up. From left: P. Nguyen, D. Oliver, L. Rolle, S. Kunst, J. Casas, R. Franklin, D. Burnell, V. Nguyen, Y. Chang, T. Ngo, K. Girls Basketball Top: V. Henderson. L. Rogers. S. Leahy. S. Nuechterlein, D. Surmon, T. Scofield. Front: T. Harris. K. Good. T. Nguyen. D. Hoffman. M. Moore. The girls Varsity basketball team, with James Weeks at the helm, en- tered the 1987-88 season with C.I.F. playoff hopes, but that hope came to an end with a disappointing 37-30 playoff loss to Laguna Beach. They finished the season by coming in tied for third with a 5-5 league re- cord and 6-17 overall. The overall record was deceiving because the Varsity team played tough competi- tion, like C.I.F. Champions El Toro and Mission Viejo. Underclassmen led the team, with Mo Moore and Kim Good at the head of the pack. Heighth was a major problem this year, with Sue Nuechterlein being the tallest player at 5 ' 10 . Because of the significant lack of height, the three point line was used by the lady mustangs. They averaged more points from behind the three point line than underneath the basket. Gunners from behind the line were Vanessa Henderson, Kim Good, and Dawn Hoffman. As Coach Weeks put it, We shot better from three point range than inside six feet As the team players learned this ar, when you shoot bad, it ' s hard to win.
