Jennifer, don ' t cry. it ' s only ten feet to the finish. Mesa girls in front. VARSITY GIRLS CROSS COONTRY Led by first-year coach Victoria Kelly, the Girls ' Varsity Cross Country teann had many accomplishments in the 1987-88 season. They made vast improvements from the beginning of the season to the end. Morning workouts were held five days a week from 6:30 to 7:15. The girls average 8-10 miles of running a day. There were strong individual performances, with some of the girls breaking their own records and placing high In league. In the tough Pacific Coast League the Mustangs came in a hard-earned fourth. The team was comprised of 8 runners: 2 seniors, 1 junior. 2 freshmen, and 3 sophomores. During league competition they displayed great talent and strong determination. At ttie Costa Mesa Invitational, out of 70 runners. Michelle Bryant and Karen Morris took 4th and 5th respec- tively. The team was led by the strong running ability of Team Captain Lisa Gale, whose outstanding performance also gained her Most Valuable Player. Jennifer Harader was awarded the Most Inspirational, while Most Improved went to Dawn Bernacchi. The rest of the team included Carol Hoang, Rachel Honeycutt, and Michaela Morgan. J.V. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY The 1987-88 season was a great one for the J.V. girls ' Cross Country team. With an overall record of 2-3, they placed fourth in league. They had the potential to come in second, but illnesses and injuries caused many setbacks. The Mustangs defeated Trabuco Hills and Orange but couldn ' t get past Laguna Hills, ranked first in league. At the Fountain Valley Invitational, the Costa Mesa girls came in third place. They showed extreme will and endurance. The positive outlook they possess will help them as Varsity runners. The team was headed by Most Valuable Player Monique Farmer, Team Captain Lisa Goertner. and Most Improved Ahn Tran. Other team members that contributed to the overall success were Nicki Thompson. Claudia Ojeda, Michiko Myomoto. Lily Myomoto. Michelle Briscoe. Geannie Price, and Dori Beeler. Monique sees her ex-boyfriend. Lisa ' s taking a nice run in the park. r ■ M y f Sports-51

Girls Varsity Tennis VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS Through the outstanding performances of its ' team members, the 1987-88 Girls Varsity Tennis Team had one of it ' s best seasons ever. They finished with a 7-9-1 record, and had many achievements both overall and individually. The team con- sisted of eight seniors with years of exper- ience backing them. Once again the pow- erful coaching of James Weeks was evi- dent. The mustangs swept Trabuco Hills and Orange, but narrowly lost to the pow- erhouse Woodbridge with a socre of 7-11. All team members made great contribu- tions, but some were recognized above the rest. Diana Day and Michelle Belacic, the number one Varsity Doubles Team and ranked eighth in league, captured Most Valuable Doubles Player for their outstanding play, while Tricia Harris, ranked seventh in league ended the sea- son with a record of 33-18 which earned her Most Valuable Singles Player.
