Varsity Waterpolo Awesome! That ' s the only word to describe the 1987-88 Boys ' Varsity Waterpolo team. Undefeated in league, they won their second consecutive C.I.F. crown. With an overall record of 24-6 and eleven returning Varsity lettermen, there was no doubt who was the team to be feared. The Mustangs started off their season by easily defeating Laguna Beach 271. The teams in the Pacific Coast League were no match for our powerful Mustangs. They were ranked fifth in the county, under 4-A powerhouses Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor. Under the coaching of Tony Bell and Drew Maness the entire team played exceptionally well throughout the season. The team averaged 20 goals a game, and each player and championship experience. With re- turning Ail-Americans Shane Coo ns and Tony Litwak, there was no doubt who the C.I.F. 2A Division Champions would be. In the first round of C.I.F. competition, the Mustangs easily beat Chad- wick by a score of 20-4. They went on to defeat Kennedy 17-10, El Rancho 17-13, South Pasadena 16-6, and finally Harvard High by the impressive score of 16-7. During C.I.F. play, the Mustangs broke two records. They were the only 2-A team to win two consecutive C.I.F. titles and they had the largest winning mar- gin, nine goals. Many personal goals were reached and records were broken by players. Senior Shane Coons was named First Team All Pacific Coast League, All P.C.L. Most Valuable Player, First team All C.I.F., All C.I.F. Most Valuable Player, and the all- time number one scorer at Costa Mesa with 118 goals for the 1987-88 season. Seniors Tony Litwak and Mike Kennedy and junior Scott Taylor were named first Team All Pacific Coast League and First Team All C.I.F., while Devin Howell, Craig Plitt, and Steve Kunst received Second Team All Pacific Coast League honors. The following varsity team awards were present- ed: Shane Coons - Most Valuable, Kent Christensen - Most Improved, Craig Plitt - Most inspirational, and Scott Taylor ■ Team Captain. When asked about his seniors. Coach Tony Bell said, They ' re all really talented. To single one out would do injustice. Each team member contributed equally to the overall success of the team. The Varsity Team has accomplished what few have ever been able to do. Congratulations to the Costa Mesa Waterpolo Team for an outstanding season.
