Varsity Football The 1987-88 Varsity football team started off the season with optimism and high hopes of being league champions. The mustangs won their first game of the season by defeating archrival Estancia by the score of 32-7. While the Pacific Coast League remains one of the toughest in C.I.F. with powerhouses like Laguna Beach and Woodbridge. the mustangs had a chance. When league competition began, enthusiasm was running high. Some unfortunate injuries and bad mistakes contribued to a disappointing season. The mustangs lost five games by a field goal in which one or two plays could have turned those games around. In the game against Laguna Beach, who later went on to win league, the mustangs lost, within the last minutes, by the heartbreaking score of 17-14. The Varsity coach was once again Tom Baldwin. Coach Baldwin felt that they were a first rate team, but because they were young, starting eight underclassmen on offense, and had some unfortunate injuries, it proved difficult to turn all of their close games around. As Team Captain Kevin Day states. Even though we had unfortunate injuries, we played together as a team, and fought til the very end . The Costa Mesa High Outstanding Players: Team Captains. ry?. JV Foo tball JUNrOR VARSITY FOOTBALL The Junior Varsity Football Team was coached by John Carney. They achieved much success during the 1987-88 season, finishing with a record of 2-3 and placing a re- spectable third in league. During preseason, they played exceptionally well, easily defeating San- tiago, Los Alamitos, and Katella. Although they did not win league, all team members worked hard and showed extreme dedication to the game of football. The boys ' main goal was to strive for their full po- tential, which they did admirably well. The J.V. Team should feel proud, having never given up their goal to be the best they can be. Smile Joe. -r You ' re supposed to kill the ball, not the tee. Interesting dance Folk. The camara is this way Craig. 38Sporls
