restling Strong ut Lacking Dedicated People Upset, was the story of the Varsity Grappling season. With twenty-nine potential wrestlers quit- ing the squad, key weight positions were lost as the year progressed. Despite these circumstances, the team showed much strength. Unfortunately, victories were hard to come by due to continual forfeit of eighteen to twenty-four points a match. Those players who did remain added strength and true dedication to the squad. Out of these, six players had league championship and CIF potential. Dale lmoto, last year's league champ, placed third in the Las Vegas and Costa Mesa Wrestling Invitationals. Also, Frank Elbourn, a fifth place winner at Las Vegas, continued strongly in league. Other members included Mike Scarlett, Dale McAllister, a sophomore, Ken Arumora, and Kevin lmoto, a sixth place finisher at Las Vegas. Next year should prove to be successful for those well-seasoned athletes who hope to take league finals and CIF. I. Dale Imoto demonstrates a crossbody cradle. 2. Varsity warms up before a match. 3. Frosh-Soph Grapplers Inexperienced But Strong Quality, not quantity definitely applies to Mesa's Frosh-Soph Wrestling team. Two members of the squad, Gary Ferguson and Steve Perez, led their team with impressive records and a good number of pins. All of the wrestlers showed definite improvement as the season progressed. The young matmen had a good league record even though they did not have a full team. San Clemente and University fell easily to Mesa wrestlers. But Mesa grapplers did not fare quite as well against Dana Hills and Mission Viejo, losing nar- rowly to both schools. Their most decisive victory came against Estancia in a non-league match. Mesa matmen pinned almost every opponent of the stunned Estancia team. Coach Bob Hernandez and recent Mesa graduate Dan Duddridge seemed to be very pleased with the per- formance ofthe young Mesa wrestlers. They all seem to feel that in years to come Mesa teams are to be the strong ones. l. Ken Arimura seems amused with practice. 2. Jeff Arbuckle will be pinned by his mistakes. 3.
