Waterpolo Successful, CDM Defeated, 10-7 The Varsity Waterpolo team of 1977-78, once again, finished with an excellent season-16-8 overall and a 7-1 league record. Led by Bob Dolan's record setting 109 goals, John Olsen's consistent play at set position and Ron Fross' excellent execution throughout the year, the Mustangs finished second in league, losing only to league champion University-and that in a 4-3 overtime thriller. Coach Terry Bowen's Mesa team also placed in the top five in the Northern California Stanford Tournament for the second year in a row. Plagued by injuries early in the year, junior players had to fill in. Alan Chacon, Matt Whitmore, Matt Sponagle and goalie Mike Castillo provided the poloists with a good pre- league record and a ninth place ranking in CIF. This ex- perience will furnish a superb nucleus for next year's team. The highlight of this year's season was the varsity defeat of Corona del Mar, 10-7, in an exciting exhibition of excellent waterpolo at the Sea Kings, pool. Varsity players met prior to this contest and decided to dedicate the game to outgoing Coach Bowen. All members of the team would like to thank Mr. Bowen for the time and effort he put into the Aquatics program here as well as wish him the greatest of success and happiness in his new position as head coach at Questa Junior College.
