Mesa Underclassmen End Successful Year This yearis Freshmen and Sophomores fared sur- prisingly well in South Coast League play. The Sophomores, coached by Dick Oberrueter, fin- ished in second place with a 7-2 record, losing to Mis- sion Viejo in a 6-0 heartbreak and to league champ El Toro in a 42-33 offensive thriller. Led most of the season by the passing combination of Bill Lux-to-Dan Bauer plus a swarming-type de- fense, sparked by Mike Mills and Mike Field, held three opponents scoreless while averaging up to 20 points an outing offensively. The line play was also a strong point of the team, as they were led by Brett Thompson, Reggie Zeal and Gerard Armstrong, as they opened gaping holes time and time again for their running mates. The Freshmen of coaches Jim Gmur and Ron Bauer ended up, like the Varsity, at a 3-6 clip and a fifth place finish in league. The young Mesans were led by hard- running quarterback, Greg Teregis and some shifty backs in Max Marold and Greg Potjes. The defense sputtered all year with inconsistent play in the later stages of most games. The strong points were Forrest Werner, Sam Burgard and Cliff Elbourn, all of whom are linemen. l. Bill Lux rolls out, behind Brian Martin's block. 2. Freshnaen take a break to talk over son1e strategy. 3. Bill Lux attempts to hurdle a Dana Hills opponent. 4. The line, led by Gerard Armstrong, Mike Mills, Dave Mac- Allister and Brett Thompson, lead the charge. 66 SPORTS 7? awytiq 'a- 9- up U' 3... if ,pf 52112. 49' T vtt T
