Mustang Season Ends In Victory Over '1Toads,' The Costa Mesa High Varsity Football team for 1977-78 finished very strong the last two weeks, after playing the first seven weeks inconsistently. ln the first pre-season game against La Quinta, the Mustangs failed to generate any offense and lost 13-0. In game two, against cross-town rival Estancia, three big plays were converted into touchdowns, as the Eagles won 21-0. Against Dana Hills in the first South Coast league game of 1977, the Mustangs won 26-21, after falling be- hind l4-0 in the first quarter. The gridders came back behind the passing Wizardry of Jerry Cribbs, 11 re- ceptions and two touchdowns by receiver Rick Ayers, and 128 yards and two touchdowns for hard-running Scott Miller. Next against Mission Viejo, the Mesans fell prey to five fumbles and six interceptions, as they lost 14-6 at Orange Coast College. First place was still in reach as Mesa went against the San Clemente Tritons. But, a fumbled punt and an in- terception led to two Triton TD's as Mesa lost again, 13-0. The next team on the schedule was lowly Uni- versity. A switch in quarterbacks proved to be not enough as the men of Mesa lost 12-6, thanks to a touch- down with 0:49 left on the clock by the Trojans. Spir- its were low, as Mesa travelled to El Toro, and it showed on the field as well, two interceptions and three fumbles cost the Mesans a 22-7 defeat. A turnaround was in order for next week's Homecoming game at Davidson Field against Laguna Beach. A team shake-up by Coach Tom French was just what the gridders needed as they were led by a mirac- ulous running exhibition by Mike Teregis with 211 yards and three touchdowns, plus a two touchdown performance by returning quarterback Jerry Cribbs. Mesa won the Homecoming game for the third year in a row, 34-10. The air was hot, as it always is when Mesa meets the Toads from Corona del Mar. Ready to avenge last year's 17-16 robbery, a toad was brought in to inspire the Mustangs players. And, that it did, as a steady run- ning game coupled by a tenacious defense along with a 13 yard aerial from Cribbs-to-Ayers led the Costa Mesa High Mustangs to a 14-6 victory over the now second place Sea Kings. Steve Finch, a First Team selection, along with Rick Ayers, Mike Teregis and Dale Amburgey, Second Team selections, led the Mustangs all year. 1, Rick Ayers, Orange County's leading receiver for 1977, takes off down the field with a Jerry Cribbs aerial. 2, Mike Tcregis, this year's Mustang MVP, sprints away from the hapkssC1nona delh4ar ToadsU 3. Jerry Ckibbs gets set behind Steve Finch,'Ted Butch, Dave Knox,Bob Horndlandjohn Pehchowskf 4, Defense, led by Mike Scarlett, Marlon Blodgett, Dale Am- burgey,CfhrB hdonahan and hdike Kennedy are setto charge Estancia. 5. Mike Scarlett intercepts a pass, with help from Paul Krkonan 6' SPORTS
