W SWE E Team Strength From Many Returning Lettermen The Costa Mesa Varsity Swimming team for 1978 had another good season, led again by the lone senior, Bobby Dolan. Under first year coach Bob Shupp, the Mesans fin- ished in the top four in league standings with Dolan leading the way for Mesa's individual gems. Dolan con- sistently captured the 200 and 500 free styles with times of 1:41 and 4:35 respectively. Also doing well in league meets were Tod Pickett in the 100 backstroke and Matt Whitmore in the Sprints. Mesa's 400 free relay team with members, John Earnest, Pickett, Whitmore and Dolan qualified for CIF with a time of 3:23.0. Diver Mark Paulson had some problems during the start of the year but got them worked out with his good technique as he became one of the South Coast Leagues more prominent divers with only one year of exper- ience. 1.
