Netters Have Great Season Under New Coach The Costa'Mesa High School Frosh-Soph, J.V. and Varsity tennis teams had an exceptional year under new coach, Jack Thomas. The Varsity placed in the elite group of South Coast League teams with a top three finish, as they were led by seniors Darrell Werner, James Liu and Roger Rush, plus junior sensation Joel Werner. The netters had an overall outstanding season with the only losses coming from Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach and University. Coach Thomas hopes the younger Mesans can prove to be strong, as he graduates six of his eight Varsity lettermen. The underclassmen had another above average year with the likes of Steve Meisenheimer, Greg Potjes and Todd Hanson leading the way. The participation of this year's tennis teams was the best at Mesa in ages, as the Frosh-Soph team had a whopping eighteen boys try out and the .I.V.'s with ten boys on the squad. l. Senior Darrell Werner lets his infamous overhand smash fly into an awaiting opponent's hapless racket. 2. Joel Werner, the Mustangs junior superstar, gets set to put an ACE on his rival, in a recent match. Mustang Golfers Lack Experience And People This year's varsity and junior varsity golf teams, led by sophomore Dennis Paulsen, finished well in the very strong South Coast League. Coached by Tom Ware, the Mesa golfers played on some of the most beautiful golfcourses in all ofSouthern California. Chris Sorce, Chris Knox and Bill Kurnett also contri- buted very well to the golf team which didnit have a senior on this year's squad. With this inexperience, the Mustangs seem to have a good shot at the league title in the future. -D Mk, wb. .
