Costa Mesa Girls Uutrun League Gpponents Girls Track for 1978 had the usual average year- finishing in the middle of the circuit standings. Led by defending champions Sheryl Romahn and Joclin Fisher in the 880 and the 2 mile respectively, the girls stayed with most opponents, dominating the mil relay. A good freshmen crop along with good sprinters and hurdlers also helped greatly as Valerie Waters, Su Young and Romahn led this part of the squad. With coach Wettengel pushing the girls to their maxi- mum, the distances were strong as Fisher, Sue Kolar and Romahn led the way. A lot of underclassmen make the outlook for coach Wettengel's team in the future, very promising. l. Track team members stretch before an afternoon workout. 2. Volleyball Teams Show Vast Improvement Vast improvement was the words for this year's Boys Volleyball team as they played ball in one of the toughest leagues in the nation, the South Coast League. ln the prestigious Inglewood Tournament, the Mesans suprised all of Southern California in wiping out Edison and North Torrance in straight games, thus reaching the finals as the slfl seeded team against Redondo Beach, the 932 seed. Mesa suffered the loss, but took Redondo to three games, 15-9, 12-15, 14-16, losing the final on a tie- breaker. The awards were plentiful in this tournament as Peter Hamborg emerged as the MVP with Jim Pinkerton re- ceiving All-Tourney recognition along with a Honorable Mention status to Marlon Liotta. Two-year coach Jerry Wynant was also named the Most Valuable coach of the tournament. When the season came along the Mustang's placed in the top three in league, losing only to defending CIF champion Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar.
