Boucher, Ting Lead Baseball To Good Campaign The 1978 Varsity Baseball team finished the South Coast League season very well, after a shaky start. Coach by Jim Gmur for the fourth year, the Mesans dropped their first eight games of the pre-season, includ- ing a 4-2 decision to Newport Harbor and a 5-2 loss to Rancho Alamitos on the same day. Poor hitting as well as lack of consistent pitching sent the Mustangs into league play with an 0-8 record. Led by returning All-Country choice Dale Boucher and two-year letterman Cliff Ting the Mustangs pulled out of their slump and began to be a prominent contender for the league title. Infield standouts were Tom England, Kirk Bauer- meister and Chris Beasley, with Jerry Cribbs, Thad Tropea and Chris LaFace rounding out the outfield that helped the sluggers to a possible CIF berth. Behind the plate most of the year was George Moore, a senior, along with Cribbs who helped out when not in the outfield. Relievers Ron Hirano,Steve Manahan and Jeff Sutterfield were able to pitch a few strong innings if Boucher or Ting faltered. Graduation should hit Gmur hard, with eleven players being seniors. l. Frosh-Soph, J.V.'s Keep Slugging For Victory This year's Frosh-Soph and Junior Varsity Baseball teams had a better than expected season with both teams finishing up the year with a mixed record. The Frosh-Soph, coached by Mark Embree, had many thrills, including a come-from-behind 7-6 win over Rancho Alamitos, as the youngsters scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win. This squad,s standouts were Jon Richardson, Terry Bedell, Max Marold, Mike Love and Randy Lackey. The Junior Varsity team had defense trouble, but the hitting was better than in past years, with most of their games getting into high scores. The pitching was consistent on the strong arm of Joe Schwalbe along with the bats of Dave Pelichowski and Andy Golberg. Fielding was a poor spot in this year's .I.V. team with Rich Long having to pick up most of the slack, as he played almost errorless ball all year. Varsity coach Gmur can't wait to get these younger players into his upperclass program. I. Thrcc-year letterman Tom England shows his stance in playing u ground baH. 2. Fircballer Cliff Ting goes into his wind-up with Kirk Bauer- mcsiter and Jerry Cribbs backing him up. l l00 SPORTS
