A.F.S. STUDENT LL,V Flying across the great Pacific fby jetl from Nagoya, japan on July 30, 1964 came Mesa3s foreign exchange student - Reiko Takahashi. Her new American family was the Brysons. Peggy, a junior at Mesa, was for- tunate in having Reiko as her sister while she was in America. Unlike Mesa, japan has no AFS committee in the schools, so Reiko, along with the 120 other japanese who were finally accepted, had to go through her city gov- ernment and take three different tests which enabled her to qualify. One of her obligations as an exchange student was to give many talks on japan and her ideas of America. Many trips, however, went with her responsibilities. She traveled to Sacramento with the YWCA, and also visited San Francisco, Palm Springs, and Disneyland. just before she leaves for japan, a three weekbus trip has been planned for her and the other exchange students to Washington and New York. The academic life in japan as compared to the United States, says Reiko, is em- phasized more than their social life. She took twelve subjects at her other school. Some of the subjects she had which were not offered at Mesa are Chinese classics and philosophy. japan's music program was not quite as extensive as ours either After returning to japan she will have to finish her Senior year, as this year does not count for her. She later plans to work with the YWCA and the AFS. Reiko expressed the desire to return to the U.S. but due to rules that the AFS has set up she will not be able to for at least two years. 73

JUNIQR Mr, P. Myers l Mr. I. Grothus PRESIDENT John Hutcherson The main responsibility of thejunior Classwas to raisemoney for the Prom. The traditional money raising projects sponsored by the juniors are Marty's Corral and the Powder Puff Football Game This year bothwere a great success . The fun lasted all day, starting in the morning with the Pow- der Puff Game, followed byMarty's Corral and then the Hootenanny and dance that evening. Later on in the year the juniors held a car Wash, February 27, and a dance in March. The theme of the dance was hillbilly and everyone dressed to play the part. The result of all this hard Work was the Prom, held on May 22, at the Lafayette Hotel in LongBeach. Music was provided by the George Liberache Orchestra. Everyone had awonderful time and the year ended as a success for the juniors . Do you think the Rams will sign us up? E ttl, Q, Smoke gets in your eyes.
