Bayne BA KE TBALL This year's Mustang Varsity had one of its best records since the days of Mike Lange and the Cinderella team that reached the CIF semi -finals The fourth place finish was not an indication of how the team played The 12 win, 12 loss record was kept from being 16-8 by four upset losses The first Harbor game resulted in an upset 54-52 win as the Mesans downed Newport, then second in the county. A capacity crowd saw the Mustangs led by McGavack come from behind to outscore the Tars 23- 13 in the last period. Dennis McGavack scored 15 points and Tom Read 12 in the winwhich marked Rick Mancebo's return to Mesa. The second game with Harbor went into the books as a 79-69 loss to our crosstown rivals where Moran, Read, and Turley each received five fouls. The team got thirty-three in all. One of the high points of the game was when Craig Falconer and Steve Turley took turns holding ex-Mesan Rick Mancebo to one point. This gave him four this year against Mesa. ln league play he averaged 10.4 per game. Earlier in the season Tom Read set a school record with twenty-five rebounds breaking the previous record of twenty-three set by Mike Lange, ofArizona State, and Gary Carr, of Washington. Craig Falconer had the team high for a single gamewith twenty-six against Buena Park. The same game was also the scene for a new record of 81 points in one game breaking the old standard of 79 set last year against Fermin Lausen . The first game of the year was a 71-69 win overHuntington-Marina, the first win over Huntington in school history. Coach jules Gage felt that this year's team was the best the school has ever had and announced that Tom Read was named to the all league team by a vote of the Freeway League coaches, he was also named team captain and most valuable player.
