A bloody battle followed wherein. -many braves were killedi Chintimini had guided her i mr , . people to a dense forestg they were all safe. Soon peace was restored and wild rejoicing begagn, but Chintimini was nowhere to be found. Many warriors sought for her in vain. Ever after the Indians called the mountain Chintimini in memory of the brave maiden who saved them from destruction. . - The white man has conieg and named the mountain Mary's Peak. War are the future men and women of the greatest democracy the world has ever known. Soon we leave Corvallis High, the first to graduate since this great war began. Let us prove we are worthy of the principles of liberty, equality, and justice we have learned here. Let us assert the right of those who come after us to learn those same principles in a high school in a free country. 4- X eg I 1 W 5 A , 595 5 EF i Q 5 X S J! 1 3 4' X 52: Q 5 if 5 is 5 E AL f 'i m I .- 5 . ,w frgf Y, PE 1 Sig? Completing a full year as governing body, the student council proved a unicarneral form of government works for Corvallis High. Under the leadership of student body officers jason Widnmer, David Allison. Kathleen McMillan and Gladys Horning, a representative from each home room attended meetings each week, and reported the business to their home rooms. l KIlllIlI'l'll Mvblillau -ff x liliullxs llorninf The annual student body reception, which the council sponsored on the first day of school, marked the beginning of activities. The all-school circus in the spring served to raise funds for the lights on Spartan liield. In addition to other duties, the council revised both the constitution and by-laws during the course of the year. Mr. V. A. Moore served as adviser to the council, with Mr. Jack Irvin as assistant. Miss Helen Myers acted as student body auditor. I-'rout row: Y. Moore, Moyers. liilrsr-u. Ilnrniug, Widlm-r, Mi-Millzin. Allison. W. Tlloluzis. l'1-l'i-ivul. As young and innocent sophomores, we were wel- comed to our new place of education by upperclassmcn, who, with proper regard to since-forgotten traditions, called upon us for such favors as wearing bow ties, scrubbing the steps, and wearing huge hair bows. To show us they were our friends, however, the upperclassmen sponsored a sophomore reception dance. Later, having chosen Bob Adams, Bob Reiman, Jerry Smith, and Carol Hart as offi- cers, we gave a party for ourselves. Having our share of original ideas, we built the first C.H.S. bonfire, which went up in a blaze of glory before one of the football games. As the moneymakers of the school, the juniors, we did ourselves proud, selling hot dogs and candy bars galore. All the games were literally flooded with soda pop. Our play for the year was an amusing comedy, Footloose VJ lf Smiom .... kj ijlyww 014-C.. wwf l i-rn Morse i l Nan:-y 'l'i-nts:-I1 Class officers were Bob Reiman, Walter Hardy, Juanita jones and Maxine Leonard. Our final achievement of the year was the junior-senior entertainment. It was an ocean-cruise sport dance with decorations which were nautical but nice. In this, our final year of glory, we chose James Clarke, Mary Lewis, Fern Morse, and Nancy Teutsch to lead us. Our play, june Mad, was an outstanding success, estab- lishing something of a record. As a fitting reward for buying the greatest percentage of student body tickets, we were shown a free movie at the Majestic Theater, which was enjoyed by all. Our class was ably advised by Miss Vera Horner and Mr. Russell Adams. This year, our tangible gift to posterity consisted of an electric time clock-scoreboard in the gym. We donated the rest of our funds to help pay for the football lights. ral., XlIlI'l'lN lI.Xlil'IlI, I .l ..X. ii. Vim--I'lu I llllllr 2.11. I. llnys' NXlXl.X I'.Xl l.l3l' .XllNlll,ll. There was the morning that after inhaling breakfast we brushed our teeth with Dad's shaving cream .... and the morning we skidded down the lull, worked for five minutes on our locker combination . .. to find that ours was the next one over! Then remember the day we were first introduced to the principal and trying to make the proper impression when they said Miss Mazie Daze, this is Mr. Moore, our new principal and we said, How do you do, Miss Daze. There was that, and the time after gulping our lunch down we hic-coughed all during 4th period. Remember the day we got back our senior themes and notes . . . . one note which' found its way in would have been a censor's delight! .... naturally a com- position on the choicest gossip . . there was the time we stayed up all night .... and into the next morning feven to conversing with the chickensj cramming for a Social Econ. test - the one that was put off for three weeks .... Think back to that day in assembly when everyone was yelling and you got started late-then when every- one else was finished, you were still soloing! W'ill we ever forget .... the class when we decided to develop our artistic ability, with teacher as subject--and she was standing right behind us! lt was all these little things and more-but isn't it fun to remember? . . Nor Senior Boy All is quiet. The ringing of an alarm clock shatters the stillness. Groans drown out the ringing of the alarm. Soon four dull thuds are heard. Enter the hero, his hair tousled, his face with a dazed expression, and one shoe on the wrong foot. With all the grace of an elephant he sits down to his Shredded Wheat and cocoa, filling his mouth by the bail and shovelful respectively. Witli a swish he leaves the table and begins a frantic search for his books. This ends when he finds his books in the wastebasket, where he threw them the night before after disagreeing with Shakespeare. Like an avalanche, he, his books and his bicycle go hurtling off the front porch and down the steps to earth. and dashes along his way. Peddling swiftly down Thirteenth street, he comes to Van Buren. He spies a police car and decides to observe traffic regula- tions. Feverishly pumping on the brake, he makes a belated stop in the middle of the street. I.ike the shot out of a cannon, he again resumes his journey. Unknown to him, he forgot to zip his notebook. The first three pages of his senior theme, Apple Polishing the Scientific Way,', fall out. He makes a desperate grab and rescues them in mid-air. His eraser is next in line. He has to stop to retrieve it, what with priorities and all. He continues his weary way on to Taylor street where he misses the Red Bus by inches. Fortunately nothing happens for the next three blocks, and he reaches Corvallis High School intact. There isn't time now to put it away, so he leaves his bike on the sidewalk and hurries up the southwest steps. He reaches the top, gives the door a tugg nothing happens. He tugs again. Still nothing happens. He gives the door a couple of kicks. Then, like a bolt from the blue it hits him, and slowly he mutters, Oh, ?:i'!?. This is Saturday. After a wild week, the thermometer showed the juniors lost by only a fraction of a percent. Under the leadership of Rae Ardis DeMoss, the -junior Sales Committee distinguished themselves, selling more luscious candy bars and pop than any one class before them. The fall and spring initiations found several juniors contributing to old members' amusement. Juniors interested in dramatics participated in the Thalian play and the junior Class play, Ever Since Eve. Those giving outstanding performances were admitted to Thalian. Class officers Earle Greig, Pat Metcalf, Georgene Frink, and Pauline Moore met with representatives from junior home rooms, forming the junior council. At the end of the year this body declined to give the seniors a party, partly because of the early closing of school, partly because they did not think the seniors deserved one. l l'0lIl row: Hain-y.
