Continuous as the stars that shine, With belts in hand, while I'm at bay, They stand in never-ending line Along the lower balcony. One thousand saw I at a glance, Ready to make me do a dance. The coach beside them danced in glee While all those eyes were glued on me, A move to the left or a move to the right, And each boy swings with all his might. Their fiendish joy gave me the blues, I said, I should have changed my shoes! Then I vainly tried to make the door. With my life at stake, I crossed the floor, And when the coach yelled, Let 'er go! ' My feet just Hewj but believe me, bo, The sting of every single belt, Was in due time most keenly felt. Now when upon my couch I lie, Done up in numerous healing salves, Thinking with many a long drawn sigh, There's no use doing things by halves, I loudly moan, as I feel each bruise, I swear I'll always change my shoes. -WELLINGTON GAULT, '23
