His inspiring leadership 0 . , . ,, l it B 3 THE BOARD OF EDUCATION The theme of this edition of the Co-Hi-An was suggested by C. H. S.'s two new wings recently completed. The story behind these wings is that of thoughtful discussion of the Board of Education and that of hard study of plans by the Building Committee of that group. Expenditures reaching approximately S580,000.00 were used to make one of the finest building additions in New York State. To supplement this new building new equip- ment in practically every department of the school was supplied, making the school as up- to-date as the addition that housed it. CORNING NORTH The opening game was played in the mud and rain which proved a decided handicap for the out-weighed Purple and White warriors. Outplaying their heavier rivals for most of the game and then having a pass interception turned into a touchdown, made the 6-0 defeat a most bitter one. However, Fiske and Osad- chey both played brilliant games to spark Cortland's offense and defense. OSWEGO Cortland suffered its second set-back in succession when it played a heavier Oswego team. The game uncovered a brilliant run- ning back in Gus Anthony who scored Cortland's first touchdown. Their extra point conversion was the margin of victory by which the Shafermen lost, and this combined with several tough breaks, proved we had a team which would be hard to beat in the rest of the games. FULTON A scoreless tie was all either team could show for their afternoon's work. The game was played between the forty yard markers with neither team being able to take advan- tage of its breaks Hughes and Sokurenko were blocks of granite in the Cortland forward wall, while Roe and Fiske held up the second- ary defenses. This was the second year we have played to a scoreless tie with Fulton. ONONDAGA VALLEY The David and Goliath scene was re- enacted when Cortland eked out a seven to nothing win over the huge Valley squad. Osadchey was the spearhead of the offense which netted Cortland its winning touchdown in the third quarter. As a result of many hours of hard work two important selling goals have been attained: the overwhelming General Organization membership and the united campaign for Co-Hi-An subscriptions. This year on May 5 the Student Councils played host to many of the same organizations from surrounding high schools. The results of this conference were encour- aging to the idea of the student council government. Junior High Student Couneil To arrange a subordinating agency for the Student Council and the General Organization in the Junior High School, representatives from each of the home rooms in that department were elected to form the junior High Student Council. Through this council the General Organ- ization obtained a large membership from the Junior High. Through its support the Student Council mixer and the post-game mixers were successfully presented. It is believed that experience gained in the junior High Student Council will lead to better administrations in the Senior High Student Council. Throughout the year this organization has practiced diligently twice a week under the skilled direction of Miss Marsh, with the result that a high quality of music has accompanied many of our entertainments. Among selections played at presentations of the Dramatic Club were: The Country Garden, Londonderry Air, and Light Cavalry. Much time has been spent in mastering Passe Pied by Ernest Gillett, a piece of work which is required for training in a class orchestra. Plans are now in progress concerning music which will be furnished for the Commencement activities in June. There will be several vacancies to be filled next year, as the following members are in this year's graduating class: Armand Gabriel, an excellent bassoon player: Olive McWilliams, the orchestra's saxophone playerg Lewis Hollister, the drummer: Robert Hudson, the clarinetist: Marilyn Monroe. the pianist: and Helen Chapman, Genevieve Corsi, and Marie Spaziani, three violinists who have been a part of the organization for several years. The whole school will miss these capable seniors. In the first play, Spreading the News by Lady Gregory, the scene was a country fair in Ireland. The apple women fPhyllis Herseyl kept exag- gerating a story with the aid of her friends CPhyllis Burkholder, Robert Hall, Robert McGrath, and Norma Hotalingj While Bartley Fallon, the pessimist, and his wife Mrs. Fallon CFrank Olds, Shirley Potterl discussed their troubles and prepared for the worst. The policeman CDavid Travisj and the visiting magistrate CBen Silsbeej believed the story and arrested Bartley for the murder of jack Smith Cjames McKeenJ until Jack himself appeared. The second play, The House of Greed by Robert St. Clair, was the story of the mysterious death of a wealthy spinster, Letitia Roberts, cleverly acted by Caroline Hadley. Jacqueline Weirick won sympathy as Letitia's sick sister, Carlotta Hendricks while Ellen Parker brought comedy through her portrayal of the maid, Mamie Held. The maid, the sick sister, the nephew, Cedric Roberts fAnthony Calvanij and his fiancee, Gwenda Lee QRuth Chapinj were all suspected of the murder. To every- one's surprise the nephew proved that Detective Brooks fCharles Brown! and an innocent appearing vacuum cleaner salesman, jerry McArthur CWilliam Novadoj were the murderers. Davisj. The minister CWilliam Wrightj and members of the Sunnyville Friendly Society CA. Vailette Knapp, Theodora Greenman, Elizabeth GardnerD tried unsuc- cessfully to stop the feud. But only during the visit of a stranger COlga Wereshl was there any peace in the house. Each play was directed by a student-namely, Margaret Glann, Barbara Moench, and Evelyn Liberman. The Stagecraft club under management of Torry James Luce built and handled the scenery. Be- tween scenes the Orchestra under the direction of Miss Marsh furnished the music. The spring play was given on May 23 and 24, 1941. The title of the play was Don't Take My Penny. by Anne Coulter Martens. It was a three act comedy under the direction of Miss Barbara Chaloux assisted by Charles Brown, student director. In fall the football games and the fall mixers are going in full force. The one-act plays, the organization of the pub- lications and the clubs, and the marching parades of the band make the time fly into the winter season. Before long the Thanksgiving and Christmas vacations have passed. Then come more semi-formal balls and theater parties. Snowflakes falling bring hopes for skiing and sleigh riding. Basketball and vol- leyball pass by and signs of spring start to show on the campus. The spring dances and the spring play combined with busy yearbook ac- tivity make a short day between this season and regents. Then graduation with all its pomp and glory arrives. With cheery good byes and tearful farewells the year at C. H.
