We, the students ot Cortland High School wish to express our gratitude to Dr. lames Walsh tor his sympathetic kindness and guidance as our physician and friend. He has always evinced a deep interest in all phases ot community lite, and has served as president ot the Cortland County Hospital Statt tor a number ot years. ln l9l7 the Board ot Education appointed Dr. Walsh medical adviser tor the public schools ot the city ot Cortland, which ottice he still holds. His service in this connection has been characterized by an earnest devotion to the duties ot the otiice, and by the utmost consideration tor the boys and girls under his supervision. This recognition in our school annual is symbolic ot the esteem and attection with which Dr. Walsh is regarded by thc members ol the student body. HE YEAR'S EVENTS AS SEEN TH .., .-i,,,.,.-. H , ..,,,,i,,.. ,wlwf ,f-.W .. or A STUDENT CODE I realize that, as a student, I owe an obligation to parents or relatives whose sac- rifices have given me the foundations upon which I am building, to the school which offers me an opportunity to develop my natural powers, to the community which makes possible my educational advantages, to my country which gives me liberty under law, and to my own future as an individual and a citizen. In keeping with my determination honorably to discharge this obligation, I promise: That I will use the facilities offered by the classroom to enlarge and broaden my interests, to increase my knowledge, to bring me closer to Truth, and to cultivate habits of industry and sound thinking. That I will broaden my sympathies and practice the arts of sociability, true friend-- liness, and helpfulness in my home, in the school, and in all my associations, avoiding snobbishness in my own conduct and condemning it in others. That I will develop habits of reading and conversing which will broaden my culture and enable me better to understand the problems of community, state, and nation. That I will carry on discussion in and out ot the classroom, not to overcome oppon- ents and gratify my pride, but that I may grow in knowledge and wisdom. That I will avoid every form of cheating or dishonesty and will undertake to dis- courage all dishonorable practices. That I will obey every rule or law of school, city, state, and nation, reserving the right to criticize rules and laws constructively, but respecting them so long as they prevail. That I will use my powers and influence for the common good. That I will pursue happiness myself and strive to establish conditions under which happiness and opportunity may be hopefully pursued by everyone in my home, my school, my community, my country, and the world. Bennett BOARD OF EDUCATION The members of the Board of Education are manifestly interested in every boy and girl who has accepted the opportunity to acquire know- ledge through the medium of our school system. Therefore, we are especially proud of the manner in which the present student body has adjusted itself to the conditions which have necessarily existed during the building of our new high school. The cooperation and loyalty of our seniors and juniors has been exemplary, and we feel assured that, if they go out into life with this spirit of helpfulness, it will prove a great factor in bring- ing about the success that we all wish for them. C. H. V. Elliott, President, Board of Education HE YEAR'S EVENTS AS SEEN TH 5105 MR. ERWIN G. SIMMONS, A. M., Superintendent ln recent years there has been considf erable expansion in the number ot school activities which occur outside the class room. Each activity makes some worth- while contribution to the social develope ment ot those boys and girls who partici' pate in its organization and management. Every ettort has been made by the HCo-Hie An statt to make the l94O issue an accurf ate, pictorial record ot the more interestinq and important events as they have hap- pened during the school year. lohn H. Burke The current school year has been un- usual. The building proqram has made it necessary to carry on the work ol the school under very untavorable conditions. l want to commend the student body tor its excellent cooperation. We believe the underclassmen will have their reward in the expanded tacilities made possible lty the new buildino. ln view ot the tact that the seniors will not have an opportunity to enjoy the new buildino, we want to thank them lor the sacrifices they have made. Calkins, Vice President, H. Thames, Presidentg B. Hart, Secretary, E. Mclsyrnan, Treasurer SENIORS TELL Alma Mater has contributed much to us, the class of l94O. As time for grad- uation approaches each of us is filled with a combination of regret at leaving the scene of school day memories and of pride in having achieved a goal. Although the events of the year have been carried on under a new building program, we have enjoyed most of the activities customary to Seniors. Besides, this year's Senior Class will be the first to have the honor of being graduated in the newly remodeled auditorium. The fall term opened with the election of officers. Harry Thames was chosen president. Leona Calkins received sec- ond highest honors as vice president. Betty Hart was intrusted with the duties of secretary, and in Edmund McLyman's hands were placed the class's purse strings. The General Qrganization conducted a successful campaign, as usual. For a two dollar membership, this year, each student received tickets for all football and basketball games, admission to a school dance, and a subscription to the Hpurple Pennant . t I THE YEAB'S EVENTS AS SEEN TH 5145 q THEIR STORY i i I The social spotlight focused here and there on the many Senior girls who found their Uprinces charming among the under classmen. Dame Rumor hinted that the 'lcradle snatching was due to the fact that the lunior girls held their Senior heroes in tow. To the football team goes the credit for a brilliant season. Coach Shafer's boys fur- nished the spectators with many thrills, 'lLefty Calkinsis 55-yard run for a touchdown in the Sayre game. Walter Hartwell caused a commotion in the Gnondoga Valley game when he kicked off only to find the ball behind him when he finished, The first scheduled games of the basketball season were played out of towng the rest, in the newly completed gym. The team retaliated for the Norwich football defeat by winning two basketball victories over them. The star game cf the season was Cortland's triumph over Union Endicott, 39-34, when they were at the top of the League. Prominent at both football and basketball games were the peppy cheerleaders, who the rooting section agreed turned in a fine job. At the last game a fine gesture of real sportsmanship was shown by the lunior Sguad when they turned the entire leading of cheers over to the Senior Sguad. For a few minutes sentiment ran high as our spirited cheerleaders, for the last time, spurred on their team to victory for Qld Cortland High. Both school publications, the l'Purple Pennant and the 'Co-Hi-An, have increased in number of subscriptions this year. Miss l-lamelin and Miss Haug, with their able Purple Pennant Staff, are to be complimented for their work in putting out such a splendid paper. We are eagerly awaiting the publication of the Co-Hi-An, for our curiosity has been aroused all year, by members of the staff here and there, with pen and camera, spotting material. With this collection to draw from and the capable leadership of our yearbook adviser, Miss Tallant, we are sure to have an interesting annual. With our last year drawing to a close our heads are filled with the oncoming events of graduation. Already, we are looking forward to the Senior Dance scheduled for May 29, Senior Day on lune 7, and, finally, our graduation on lune 25. Naturally, we are proud to have tasted this much of success, but most of us realize that this attainment is, after all, but a commencement in the life which we must BUILD. lUGH THE PCANDID CAMERA'S EY 5155 eN7 .Q-auf'-f 5VJ ',4V WWW' Mtwgl, Abbott Ackley Alexander Allen ww wafer LIL-1255 Anthony Bailey Behrens ellardini I gl l iii Bennett Bertini Bertini Bidwell EMM Blankensliip Bodine Breed Brewer .u!lQ,4sps-.LYZTW J 8.4, '.., 7 ?t f'v 'Y I B mbvfk. They are the students who cooperate the most with teachers and friends. Those who attain membership in the Sportsmanship Broth- erhood consider it a great honor and endeavor to live up to the code of a sportsrnan, that is to keep the rules, keep fit, keep his temper, play the game with his comrade, keep pride under during victory, maintain a stout heart in de- feat, and keep always a sound soul, a clean mind, and fi healthy body. Student Council Extra-curricular activities are directed and promoted by representatives from the home-rooms. Each room elects one representative called a chairman and an assistant. Early in the fall, the chairmen meet to elect a slate of officers and to plan for the different activities. These offi- cers and chairmen constitute the Student Council. This year's Student Council has planned well, for despite the difficulties under which it has operated, over SOO General Organization memberships were obtained and over 500 Co-Hi,Ans were sold.
