For the love of life fmy treasure, which lies behind tlie doors, I seek throughout my ages for the secret, nothing more. Some doors, I see them open in the midst of my new eyes, but when I try to pass them, they close, like blackened skies. I try to jar them open with the force of curious hands, but only with the strength of time will the doors, like? love, expand., And when 1 finally find the key, with this then I shall find, the door does open slowly, to relieve my cautious mind. But the hinges are still rusty, . only time alone will see, when the doors which open vastly that thesecret lies ,in me. ' David T. The advisory board council consists of students who are elected by the student cotmcil. They are basically elected for their work in school ac- tivities. The council is the Voice of the student body at Cortez. They meet with the adminis- trators and help to solve some of the student problems. 'K T x Citizen's Transportation Advisory Committee Working with other people on this committee Miriam Field studies the needs of the city of Phoenix. Freeways, buses, roadways and the beautification of roads in Phoenix have been discussed and given to the Phoenix City Council in the form of recommenda- tions. Bike paths for all new roads being built was suggested, along with expression for the need for bike paths in more parts of the city. Bus lanes for express buses and a grid system for buses along with lower fares has also been recommended. MA YORS YOUTH AD VISUR Y BUARD The Mayors Youth Advisory Board was originally created in 1969 by an informal act of the Phoenix City Council. The board, a responsive group, has developed itself in the areas of ecology, entertainment, education, and more recently has been instrumental in their work on different and very important projects 1' ,..5f qw LEFT -RIGI-IT: Peter I-Iardt, Mark Stanly, George Love BOYS STA TE GIRLS STA TE Polly Haessig, Linda Sasenick LEFT TO RIGHT: c. It is an interesting experience to live in another country different from my own. When I go back to Columbia, I'll take many happy and unforgettable memor- ies. I'll never forget Cortez and all the friends that I had here. Your Friend Always, Claudia Borda As a foreign student from Germany I am enjoying very much the spring semester 1975 at Cortez High. Because I am exposed to an education that differs greatly from that of Germany, I am enriching my academic back- ground immensely Teaching, coun- selors, administrators and students have extended a friendly welcome to me. For this reason Inever feel though I am a stranger. When I return to Germany in June, I will take back with me many memories and impres- sions which will be of value to me in the future. Girls sports have come a long Way since the time not so long ago, when volleyball Was considered almost a novelty sport. A chance for the girls to get some exercise and have fun. Volleyball is still both of those, but has finally begun to take on the demanding varsity sport. The 74-75 girls volleyball team stressed conditioning this year with exercise and running a part of every practice. Being in top athletic fitness is essential to the per- formance of an athlete, and the girls who wanted to come out, Wanted to be good athletes and the hours of practice each day after school started, would, be worth it, because a fine team was in the making. The girls had a rough start against an older, more experienced Paradise Valley, defend- ing division champions. The Colts were soundly trounced, but came around again for the Apollo game, where the score stood tied all the Way to 19-19 before the Hawks managed to pull a head to 21-19 and ultimately also defeat the Colts. But now the Colts had a taste of Winning and played the rest of the season Well, ending up 5-3 in league play, and 6-5 overall. The 5-3 record was good for a second place tie with Glendale in division play-offs, with Cortez getting third berth and facing in the opening round a Sunnyslope team which had been beaten only by Paradise Valley. Cortez lost to Sunnyslope in a Well fought match, the Vikings ended up second to the Trojans in the division and third in the state behind Paradise Valley. So Cortez now looks ahead to a fantastic 75 season. With only 2 starters graduating, and an excellent J. V. up and coming, Miss Austerman has potential champions in the making for at least the next 3 years. And if the attitude and effort exhibited by the girls continues, state champions is not a remote possibility. LINDA SASENICK VAR. I. V. CORTEZ -OPP. GORTEZ -OPP. Being a cheerleader doesn't begin with the first football game. It starts with tryouts in May. After final selections are made, practice gets under Way. Then after several weeks of 6 a. m practices, final preparations are made to attend National Cheerleaders Association camp. In competition with seventy squads from other schools, this years Varsity took first place honors for the district. At camp, many new cheers were learned to help raise spirit and enthusiam for Cortez. 'Lots of hours and a great deal of hard work was involved in preparation for football games, assemblies, basketball games, Club Day and various school activities. We had one disadvantage, We started from scratch, but We had one big advantage, we had a yearbook class. We all Worked together. l discovered that everybody Worked, freshman through seniors, it didn't matter what class rank anybody was. This helped the yearbook represent the Whole student body better. l must extend special thanks to Mr. Hutchison, for being a fantastic advisor, Paula Griffith, those are her great cartoons, Glenn Baxter, photographed the city for our divi- sion pages, Miss Dunn and her typing classes Who did that treacherous job of typing the class sections and of course all of the fantastic people on the staff itself. . , . , .,, X st.. , HIPH XM ,r,.,. i h in Rm ' A ' H 5 siiifrffiiatzfsvsif -r wxwwm Q , J biz, M , ' N ,Q N 41 , X- i,,.,, t . ff fry..
