THE NAVY BLUES By BILLIE ANNE CHENEY My finger tips tingledg my stomach did a flip flopg and my heart skipped a beat. I sat with baited breath. No, it wasn't a car wreck, an air- plane crash, a fire, or a murder. It was only a sailor in Navy blues passing by. For this strange fascination I have no explanation. As far back as I can remember Iye had the blues-yes those Navy blues. It yyas a lazy afternoon The sun was shining from a cloudless sky and the scent of spring vyas floating around the schoolroom Having no vyor ries I vyas at peace with the world That is until I caught a glimpse of that sailor as he passed by This same feeling that I cannot explain came oy er me and I vyas unable to concentrate on any thing Somewhere in the recesses of my brain I could hear Miss Broadstreet telling me to prove that a straight line is the shortest distance between tyyo points My mind was blank The only lines I could think of were those on the collar of the sailors middy With a sharp reproach Miss Broadstr et brought me to my senses I sat down fe ling meek and ashamed of my stupidity As I left school that afternoon I went home fully resolved to study and to oyercome this odd fascination I yy ould not notiee a sailor again Sud denlv my Hngers began to tingle my stomach did a flip flop and mv heart skipped a beat I stood with baited breath Yes it was true I had the Navy blues again EAREWELL TO C H S By BARBARA HOWELL The boy paused uncertamly at the top of the stairs Was this it at last? Memories yyere in the halls of this old high school vyhere he had soent so many carefree day s As he yy andered doyy n the hall memories of his old classmates and teachers rose in his mind He paused before the trophy ease and yyas in stantly lost in memories of the diys yy hen he had helped yyin trophies for that yery case He had neyer looked foryy ard then Those dlys had been solely for the present He turned as the yoiees of tyyo boys strolling past drifted into his thoughts oe you ye gotta pass that history test' We ll neyer be able to yyin that game yyithout you That team has some good players and yye ll need Hoyy yy ell he remembered the days yyhen he too had studied for tests sometimes far into the night l8i' because his chances of remaining on the team were at stake. Those were the days, good old carefree days, when the only thing that mattered was play- ing football and getting a date with a certain girl for the high school dances. He turned reluctantly away' and ambled over to the honor roll. Many familiar names appeared there: many were names of boys who had been his friends and classmates in his high school days. As he turned to leave the comforting thought eamc to him that C H S yyould alyy ays be there other boys would play ball and laugh and dance just as he had done Perhaps he yyould never walk those memory filled halls again but other kids vyould Thev too yy ould carry from those halls the loye yy hich he felt in his heart as he murmured Good bye and God bless you C I-I S CLOSED ON MONDAY Bv BETTYE ROBINSON The first cool bree7es of autumn vyere tossing the many colo ed leayes from yard to yard mak ing beautiful pictures but this performance yyas done all in yain as far as two teen age girls Tabbye and o yyere concerned They yyere riding about the tovyn in Jo s ear doing errands here and there for their mothers When the errands yyere completed they still had a few minutes tyy enty to be exact to do whatever they desired There was a driye in yyhere the high school croyyd gathered that naturally vyas the first place to pop into their minds The fact that there were no other cars around made little difference because they had their hearts set on a coke Jo honked the horn and she and Tabbye continued their talk about this girl and that boy For a feyy minutes they forgot about yyanting something to drink and vyere lost in con yersation Suddenly they realized that no one had come to take their orders and that during the time they had been sitting there no one else had driyen up IXeither of them took time to think about this odd eireumstanee Tabbye easually remarked Honk again o She probably didn t hear you Oh say did you hear Manhattan Merry Co Round last night? I'hey pliyeel the most heayenly tune' Did you sly Nlanhattan Merry C o Round Oh my stirs' Then this is Nlonday and t ey alyy nys elose here on Nlonday' Feeling rather silly jo started the ear and she and Tabbye droye out the baek yyay hoping that no one had seen the silly thing that they had done 1 V 1 1 1 1 1 1 , , . . . - - - 1 , .
