MID-TERM GRADUATES - GEORGE PRYOR LEONA CAVENDER - IVA MCKINNEY - - ONA WAITS JEANNETTE FOSTER CARLTON HARRIS Page 3.1 W 1 J. l l L MID-TERM GRADUATES' CLASS WILL We, the 1932 mid-term Senior class of Corsicana High School, who, being collectively of sound mind and having the fear of no human being before its eyes save that of Mr. Douglas and Mr. Nor- wood, do hereby will and bequeath to the world at large the com- modity which we have had in great abundance and which the world most sorely needs: our entire stock of common sense. To the spring Senior class we bestow all the mistakes, blunders, inaccuracies and lapses committed by us during the last exciting year of our most exciting life. Mistakes seem to be the natural portion and by acquir- ing the mistakes of another, which never hurt so much as one's own, the recipient may be spared making so many himself. To the Juniors we bequeath all our laughs and giggles, unsolved puzzles, tardy and absent marks, all the unchewed gum, apple cores and cold lunches, all the football and basketball scores, all the broken jack-knives and unsharpened lead pencils, half-filled notebooks, and all the other unclaimed properties of no value whatever. To the Sophomores, collectively and individually, we convey our power of saying the wrong thing in the right place, or the right thing in the wrong place. To the janitor, who has, at all times, done his duty in making our sojourn in the halls of learning as dreary as possible, we will and bequeath the undisputed possession of our individual desk and ink wells to be at his disposal forever. Drawn up and signed and seal affixed on this fifteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord, 1932. CSignedJ MID-TERM SENIOR CLASS. H. S. Although politely shown our insignificance, our members distinguished themselves in various activities even in their fish year. S6'pfC'1'l'lb61',1929L'Tl'1C beginning of our sophomore year. Having grown in poise and ability and having profited by our mistakes, we took great pleasure in initiating other novices in the mysteries of high school. May, 1930-Underclass days for most of us were over. September, 1930-Our third successful year in C. H. S. began. In fact, we surpassed all other classes in scholastic and athletic prowess. Robert Wilson was an all-state football player and Billy Stamps received the honor of being chosen not only on the all- State team, but also on the all-Southern. Fred Hightower and Neal Crowther also distinguished themselves in football. In bas- ketball we placed three men on the first team: Fred Hightower, Neal Crowther and Polly,' Pollard. In track we were superior. Robert Wilson took five first places in the county meet and two in the district. Fred Hightower won the county tennis singles. In the scholastic achievements Pauline Chrisman had the highest average in C. H. S. Septembcfr, 1931-This month we approached our last milestone. Again we led the other classes. Robert Wilson was chosen for the all-state football and all-Southern football teams. Maco Stewart was selected for the all-State team. Red Goodman, Orrie Harris, Carlton Harris, Neal Crowther and George Pryor were also out- standing. In basketball we contributed to the team such athletes as Neal Crowther, Albert McElwrath and Robert Wilson. Ianuczry, 1932--Sixteen of our number have left our ranks for other and higher things. Marcfa, 1932-We have crowned our former successes with the elec- tion of Helen Holmes as queen. May, 1932-Filzis. No longer can we call ourselves a part of that grand body of students which comprise our school. Although some of us have fallen by the wayside, most of us have reached our goal. We do give and bequeath to the following, to-wit: First: To the faculty, who have, against many obstacles, labored to cram us with knowledge, we give our sincere thanks and appre- ciation for their efforts. Second: To the Juniors, we bestow the high and mighty title of Seniors, together with our wonderful talents of getting byf, Third: To the Sophs, We leave our dignity and poise, for they are in great need of them. Fourth: To anyone who will take it, the editorship of the next annual. Fifth: To the whole school, collectively, many rainy-day sessions. Last: To all and sundry who might need these qualities, we be- queath:. Florette Kaplan's curls, Duvall Womack's clothes, Allen Edens' understanding QPJ of women, Mona Anderson's acute intelligence, Lod Allison's studiousness, Douglas Ferrell's large, immovable stature, Ava Nell Cole,s pep and maroon blonde locks, Carter Speed's ambition, Joseph Bell's football ability, Linda Sims' natural gift for talking, Billy Levine's love for his rattletrap , Helen Newton's good nature, Reuben Red's wit, Ralph Guess' fondness for the Tigers, Juanita Hagle's curiosity, Garner Clark's musical fingers, Mary Kenner's ability to do odd jobs for the annual. Written this twenty-second day of February, through the col- lective efforts of Mary Elizabeth Rogers. Witnesses : O. P. DOUGLAS VIVIAN A. KEYS SARA SOWELL CSignedJ SENIOR CLASS OF 1932. 9 SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Come on, girls, let's sit on this side of the field! The last time I saw Corsicana wallop Cleburne we sat over here, so let,s do it again for luck! Look, there's some seats way up there by the band. Really, I can't realize that I've been away for ten years, but don't you think this is a grand occasion for a class reunion? Come on, we'll have to climb up. Oh, pardon me! Did I step on you-Why, Sara Sowell, what have you been doing? Managing the Collin Street Bakery! Wfell, my dear, it must agree with you. You look years younger than you did when you put out the annual that year. Let me present Linda Sims, Helen Newton, Josephine Tullos and Elizabeth Smith. Don't you think that they have changed? I hardly knew them when they met me at the airport. Of course, it was no surprise when Linda and Kitty were married, but no one ever expected Helen Newton to be a night club hostess or Elizabeth to teach tap dancing in Vernon. Josephine is window decorator for the B. 85 J. chain of stores. Whom are you saving those seats for? Lucille Powell and Mil- dred Reeves! Certainly I remember them. What are they doing now? No, I simply can't feature Lucille as a photographer and Mildred as a milliner. I beg your pardon, sir. I'd forgotten that I was in front of you. Weyll move on up immediately. Bye, bye, Sara! We'll see you at the Bonner Hotel later. These seats are simply grand. Don't forget to save one for Thelma Miller. I was thrilled to death when she offered to pilot me down from New York. She has one of those new planes that Fred Skelton designed. Look, there comes Wesley Harris. He's principal of C. H. S. now. I saw him this morning. He told me that Odell Pitts, Connie Robinson, Jane Smith, Jean Stark, Hazel Smith and Opal Williams are teaching here. Lilyan Smith has charge of the new kindergarten. Come on, get up. The band's going to play 'Eyes of Texas., I re- member the symptoms. Move over, Linda, here comes Thelma, she finally got here. What kept you so late? You saw Louise Womack? Where? I want to see her and tell her how much I like her magazine covers. She always could draw, though. Listen to the music. Do you remember how Garner Clark used to play? We saw him in New York the other day. He and his orchestra are sensations in the East. Cecil Ashworth won't be here, either. He's been sent to the South' Sea Islands as a missionary. Pass me that gum. By the way, did you know that Elizabeth Elliott manufactures Goo Goo Gum Drops? I saw her just outside the gate. She said that Gladys Gordon, Vera Bottoms, Juanita Boyd, Fay Hightower and Grace McAfee are stenographers in her firm. Look down that row. Isn't that Mauriete Henderson under that fur coat? Who's that with her? Well! Can you imagine Neal Crowther, the ambitious young coach of L. S. U., playing nurse maid to that poodle? Still Mauriete always did have a way with Podunk. Those yell leaders remind me of Harvin Tilton and Ava Nell Cole. Have you seen them? They're both here. Ava Nell owns a chain of beauty shops in Chicago which specialize in tinting eye- brows to match your gowns. Horace Cowan is her business manager. Harvin Tilton is vice-president of the State National Bank. Calvin Browning is president. He told me that Wesley DeHaes and Maurice Pollack have a chicken farm near Corbett. There comes the teams on the field. They look about the same to me. Gee, I hope we win, for this is Carter Speedls first year as coach of C. H. S. I'll bet you never could guess who is in charge of the Carnegie Library. No, you're wrong, Fred Bookout is the librarian. Who were you talking to this morning? Frank Cheney! Why didn't you ask him to design you some clothes? Just imagine, he came all the way from Paris. That's what I call patriotism! I wonder where Helen Holmes is staying. I got a letter from her last week, and she said she would be here if she completed her motion picture in time. Harry Bryant is directing it, and Joe Walker is the leading man. Helen wrote me that J. C. Gaston and Ralph Guess are successful Los Angeles real estate agents. Gosh, look, he has a clear Held! We're going to make a touchdown! Who are those three girls down there doing a war dance on that manls hat? Oh, you might know Vernon Noble, Juanita Hagle and Nella Beth Davis would do something like that. They are on the Board of Directors of the Hospital for Sick Pets in St. Louis. But who is the worried-looking man whose hat they are pressing? Can you recognize him? Duval Williams! Ahem! The great cartoonist himself. What a break for the girls Cand the hatj. I suppose you know that Wayland Halbert joined the navy and saw the world. He's writing a book now called Wfay I Have cz Girl in Every Port. Speaking of traveling, Helen, did you know that J. W. Finley is one of the greatest rice exporters in the world? Clif- ton Pickering has charge of the plantations in China, and Billy Levine manages the New York office. Phillip Dunn, Pinkston Galla- way, Vivian Griffith and Earnest Matthews are also members of the firm. Was that the half? Good! Let's go down and get something to drink. Look, isn't that Reuben Red and Louis Weidmann over there in the Coca-Cola booth? I wonder who that is in that lovely dress over there. She looks familiar, I believe. Well, if it isn't Arabella Jester hiding behind a Dr. Pepper bottle! Congratulations on being the first woman to edit the New York Times. I'm really proud of you, for don't you remember how we used to labor on the 'Blue and Gold'? I heard that Sarah McComman and Albert McElwrath were married and on a trip to Africa to get specimens for the British Museum. Well, we better be getting back to our places? So long, Arabella! I'll see you again. Listen, don't forget to tune in on station WANG tonight. The Kold Kraut pro- gram is featuring Max Thornell, the tender tenor, and I think Doug- las Ferrell will announce. I surely hate to climb over those feet again, but we have to get back up. Hurry, let's get it over with. Well, look who's moved next to our seats. Mona Anderson, what on earth have you been doing? Oh, I didn't know you were housekeeper for Brooks Allen, the kodak magnate. No, I haven,t seen Florene Smith. Is it true that she and Ralston Warfield are lecturing on 'The Philippine Question'? I think I saw James West a while ago. I almost know I did because he hasn't changed a bit. Yes, he's still worrying over the price of theme pads and tennis balls in the store 'where you get what you want when you want it'! You know, Ilm seeing so many people that I just can't get in- terested in the game. What's the score, Thelma? 7-O! Why worry, we're still ahead. Say, girls, did you know that Thelma was in Wash- ington, D. C., last month? Guess whom she saw. Douglas Johnson and Mitchell Boyd. Douglas is the Democratic leader in the House and Mitchell is a representative from Missouri. Heck, we fumbled the ball. What a break for Cleburne. Time out! Do you see what I do? Look three rows down and on the other side of the band. Isn't that George Castellaw? I thought so! I heard she was making good in a musical comedy in Chicago. Lucille Green, Lucille Turner, Bonnie Jenkins, Mamie Howell and Erleen Easterling are in the chorus. Opal Jordan and Marjorie Paul have a very exclu- sive beauty shop on Park Avenue. See that rather fat man with the long hair down there by the fence? Recognize him? Well, prepare yourselves for a big surprise. It's no other than Herbert Hill gone poetic. He's poet laureate of England. It seems that he had this gift in C. H. S., but it was hidden a little deep. Oh, yes, I have another surprise for you. Remember how Allen Edens and H. Thomas Adams used to pester the teachers? Well, they're both missionaries in Africa now. Allen is in the Sahara Desert and Thomas is staying with relatives in the Congo. Josephine, have you heard from Frances since she left? We were talking about Frances Kelly and Florette Kaplan, Mona. They,re making a tour of Europe before the concert season opens there. What's that? The gun? Thank goodness, we won, even if I didn't see much of the game. Come on, girls. Let's go back to town and get ready for the banquet tonight. We'll see every one then. H. S. Glance over the list below, and select the ones you are inter- ested in. Then make a resolution now to join those clubs next year. If you feel musical, join the Boys, or Girls' Glee Clubs or the Orchestra. Miss McClure directs all three of these or- ganizations. If your talent runs to blowing a horn or beating a drum, start practicing with the Band, and help Joel Trimble take those Tigers to State next year. Do you take Latin? Then join ,the largest club in high school. Miss Hale has charge of the Comites Romani. The Alpha Delta Debating Society is sponsored by Mr. Jones. To improve budding genius in journalism, cooperate with Miss Kiber and the Blue and Gold Hi News. Are you dramatic? Everyone needs to be at times. Be prepared, and join the Dramatic Club, under the direction of Miss Mabel Bonner. The Home Economics Club is capably sponsored by Mrs. Williams. A. Y. L. I., a literary club, is under the leadership of Miss Kiber. If you like tennis, by all means join the Tennis Club. Miss Whitten is in charge. Every boy should join the Hi-Y. We all love Professor Allen. And last, but not least, there is the CORSICAN for really ambitious students. It is sponsored by Miss Keys. x --- MNNM- Q,-,.-,XWQ X A. ,xef . They were the hardest fighting team ever banded together, and should be complimented on their clean sports- manlike Way of playing the game. The lightweight team of C. H. S. has made a record that will impress itself on sport pages in the years to come. We consider it an honor and a privilege to be able to dedicate this page in the 1932 CoRsIcAN to the Tigers, who have brought glory and honor to Corsicana and C. H. S. by clean sportsmanship and hard fighting. P188 COACHES John A. Pierce Mr. Pierce, Johnny , has b n with us a number of years now, and all of us will agree that he isa best coach in the state. When he first arrived here, C. H. S. did not have much of a team, but he has improved it year by year. Next year .lie is going to be back with a,team, that Win the State ChamPionshiP.Q !. -is Wm' -' Jake Hanna Jake is pretty conceited, but rather cute along with it. However, such an efficient coach as he proved himself to be ought to be conceited. Mr. Hanna will be back in 1932 a much finer coach and cuter than ever. J. F. Gardner Mr. Gardner was a stranger to us when he came to C. H. S., but he lost no time in making himself popular. He was a good coach for the reserves and taught them many things that will help them when they become regular players. .1 If tl 1 I ff , 155 fix? ,nf -'I -1' if to 52 f?,,xX 1 ,f 'CK . - A unit Ju .XXX J Top Row: Goodman, Stewart, Wilson, Pryor Bottom Row: C. Harris, Crowther, O. Harris CAPTAINS As in 1931, the captains for the various games were not appointed until just before each game. Each leader had a chance to show his initiative, for he was chosen by Coach Pierce according to the ability, attitude and ambition shown in the week's practice. These boys did not disap- point their coach, for each boy served well in the games in which he was appointed captain. .ai Page 89 J Harvin Tilton, Ava Nell Cole, Leo Davis, Billy Ruth Young YELL LEADERS No one is able to deny that the spirit of our athletic teams while in action on the field is always influenced greatly by the Confldence and enthusiasm of the students on the sidelines. This year C. H. S. won-and sometimes lost-but during the entire season school spirit never failed. Under the superb guidance of Ava Nell Cole, Billy Ruth Young, Leo Davis and Harvin Tilton, who Were ably supervised by Miss Watson, the school showed that it was backing the team to the last student. It is Wonderful to know that our leaders were able to instill in us that same courage and sportsmanship so characteristic of all our Tigers. WOODROW GREEN H al fback Green was little but mighty, and he played his position as half wonderfully well. MILFORD GOODMAN Quarterback Little Red , our all- district quarter, was a most excellent player, as was shown several times when he was captain. Maco STEWART End Stewart was a very good kicker and suc- ceeded in scoring many extra points for Corsicana. On October 30 the Corsicana Tigers went to Waco to fight the Tigers of the Brazos. Perhaps we were a little over-confident, but Waco was much better than anybody ex- pectedg nevertheless, we finally won, 13 to O, our first score on the historic Cotton Palace gridiron. The game was much closer than the score indicated. C. HARRIS Guard Carlton was an excel- lent guard. We will surely miss him next season. CHESTER NORRIS Guard Checker , another good guard, was plenty good this year, but we can expect more of him next year. NEIL CROWTHER F ullback Crowther is probably the best punter in the state, as well as 'an ex- cellent fullback. We hope for another as good as Podunk. GEORGE PRYOR End No question about it, George was an excel- lent end. We lost him at mid-term gradua- tion. CORSICANA I2. CLEBURNE 0 No one who saw this game will forget it or the cold, rainy Thanksgiving Day on which it was played. Corsicana kicked off to Cleburne and a minute later made a touchdown on what might be termed a lucky break. The second and third periods were more of a mud- slinging battle than a football game. Early in the fourth period the Tigers put over another touchdown to sew up the game. For the first time C. H. S. beat Cleburne on Rhorne field, the score being 12 to O. Page U3 SCHULER MURPHY Guard Murphy was a mighty fine guard all year, and he certainly did his part toward winning the district cham- pionship. ROBERT FINLEY Center Robert was a punter as well as a good cen- ter. Do your best next year, Robert. O. HARRIS Tackle Page Orrie will be greatly missed next year, and his place at taclrtle will be hard to till. ERN EST McGEE Guard Cotton , another lit- tle boy, was very good at guard. Watch this boy in 1932. CORSICANA I9, TYLER 0 On the fifth of December Corsicana did what she has been wanting to do since last fall, when she beat Tyler 19 to 0 in the bi-district classic. Tyler had high hopes of victory, but went home a sorely disappointed club. Corsicana clearly outplayed the Lions except in the second period, when the Tigers fought the Lions on about even terms. Tyler never threatened very seriously to score, although they did some fine playing. The Tigers just got their heads set to win and did. JACK HUGHES Tackle Jack was handicapped the first of the season because of illness. But he developed into a mighty good tackle. DoN I 1, A M HUMPHRIES Tackle .mai Humphries was an- other excellent tackle, and he did a world of good while he was in the game. ROLAND POLLARD Center After being on the squad for several years, Polly Hnally landed za 1' A , . ,.s..,t..... .. . regular place as center and what he could do there was plenty. NORMAN PRICE Tackle Bitsy was another good tackle. It is thought this is his last year, and in losing him we lose one of our best players. x,-'MVN I l i CORSICANA 7, AUSTIN 6 E Here was probably the most exciting. and thrilling game of the year. Corsicflna was seriously handicapped by injuries, but she needs no alibi. We outplayed Austin the iirst quarter, although we failed to score. However, in the second period we made ll touchdown, and Maco kicked the extra point,X which later won the game for us. Austin came back strong after the half and put over 21 touchdown, but failed to make the extra point. From then on it was anybodyls game until the final gun. U-' my ,,,,,,.. I -.af -',A-... J. BOWLIN Hulfbaclz Up to this year Bow- lin has not played much football, but he did his share of good playing this year. JOE BELL Guard Joe was a small player, but he was right up there along side the big boys, doing his part. Bell will be back next year and will be a powerful guard. RALPH GUESS TOM SPIKES VIN'IAN GRIFFEN Mm1agc'rs i BEAUMONT I3, CORSICANA 6 The game in Beaumont may well be termed a swimming match and mud battle. Our boys went down there and fought hard on a field that was filled with water and mud, but the heavy Royal Purple were a little too much for them, for the Tigers lost, 13 to 6. This being the semi-final game for the state championship, the loss of the battle caused the Tigers to lose hopes of winning the state championship in 1931. X XT QRS, ,N xxx X'-. al 1 . GARDNER Coarfa NEIL CROVUTI-IER We all remember Po- dunk as an excellent football player, and his ability to play basket- ball accounts for many of our points. ALBERT MCELWRATH Melilwrath is a good- looking guard and is a fine defensive player. ROBERT WILSON Robert, a good for- ward, can shoot a bas- ket from almost any angle, and he is plenty fast with his feet, al- ways dealing the op- position plenty of misery. NORMAN PRICE Bitsy plays at guard position, and he does a World of good on offensive plays. SCI-IULER MURPHY Murphy is an excel- lent guard who plays with Mclilwrath. He is steadily improving and will be back next year. BASKETBALL On March 4th the'Corsicana Tigers journeyed to Austin to participate in the State Meet for the State School Boy Championship in Basketball, but they lost their first game to Ropersville, 26 to 23. The C. H. S. cagers fought an excellent fight, and losing the opening round is no dis- credit to the team. The team and coach deserve all the praise we can give them. Page 98 MITCHELL BOYD Manager ALLMON Allmon stayed in there and fought and turned out to be a Erie forward, PHILLIPS Phillips, another good guard, does Hne de- fensive playing, and is also good on of- fensive plays. BURKS Burks is a promising forward. He has been playing a fine game all year, and is steadily improving. FINLEY Finley is as good a center in basketball as he was in football, and we know how good that is. FERRELL Doug , our star cen- ter, is probably our best player. He knows the game, and this, with his height, makes him a real player. -11-gg'-'-....,1g Mau I F fi'- I 1353:-s-is -W It I. ,S HDHUQ - 3 IHS is ,... .4 f '.e:.1.'E1 1' -f Qumran 3111 :MI Ellllllllll .yah X ' .A f'Qf'ifv an K A 1 A ,klims QQQ3 5 ' Pg . iezi 7 ' 1 -I e I qs., X' Y N fwn EmwQw3tf??F ..,', .., .Emi I ll, I , it I I in , E I 5 5, Z3 agjt' wi.. w ,....:f-9g ' ts . BASKETBALL After the big four season, we entered the county meet and defeated the State Orphans' Home and Navarro High Schools for the county championship. On February 20, we went to Hillsboro and defeated Bardwell for the district honors. The following week-end May came here from West Texas, and was defeated in the bi-district game. Then we went to Austin and lost our first game. So we will join with Corsicana High and the whole City in saying to the Tigers, you have done well, and we are for you strongf, Pane 99 'E L Page 100 CC Ga hei Fu N I feb, GIRLS' BASKETBALL This year is the first year Corsicana has had a girls' basketball team in a number of years. With mostly inexperienced players to work with, Miss Evans, the coach, developed a worthy team and deserves much credit for her excellent work. Our girls played very well this year, defeating many teams that were much more experienced. Our last game was lost in the county meet, where we were defeated by Mildred. Thus our girls closed a most successful season, and they will be back better than ever next year. ity, EVELYN BUNCH Forward Bunch, one of our star forwards, was an out- standing player. HAZEL HAM1LToN Forward Hamilton, another ex- llent forward, played well and did her part. PAULINE GAY jumping Cenler y, because of her ght and her abil- was a prominent player. JOY Funox Running Center ror accounted for many of our points, She was prominent be- cause of her ver- satility. NELLY Scooomcs G ua rd Scoggings was perhaps our best defensive player. JACKIE V. TRACK t is KX , A if-'Q' The history of M lege' last year was re- Qi ' ' ' ' peated when the R, State Orphans' Home won the CountyMeet from Corsicana. How- A' ever, Robert Wil- son was again high point man, win- ning four first places and tying for a fifth. This year C. H. S. had a very good track team, and it would be a credit to any school. Much credit for this is due Jake Hanna, the coach. He worked hard every afternoon with our boys, and it was through his tireless efforts that such a successful team w a s pro- d u c e d. Success at last! cried Prof. jones to his faithful companions, who had stuck with him like fresh fly-paper throughout this daring, desperate and dirty ex- pedition. These hysterical QI mean historicalj words were uttered exactly 4 months, 31 days, 22 hours, 11 minutes and 36 seconds and 14 ticks after the party left C. H. S. All this trouble was being taken to capture a new species of a monkey called a Gastonia, This monkey had been seen several times around the pharmacy but more around a house out on Fifth Avenue. Quick! Bring a rope! Up rushed West Texasn Wil- lard in true cow-puncher style. After about only 237 throws with his lasso he succeeded in getting it tangled up with the monkey. He pulled and pulled, but with no effect. Not even the brute strength of Tuffy Cheney would budge the hairy monster. In the meantime, Killer Williams fwhose job was to make a quick sketch of the Gastonia',Q was deeply inter- ested in creating a Ha-Cha baby for Ziegfeld, until he was rudely interrupted by Virginia Middleton. 'Gin had become tired of watching Hub and Bob engage in a friendly little murder over her. Buddy was doing a Milburne special, as the result of a drink of some court- house whisky that he had drunk. Robert is seen begging for a swig. Even hot tunes from Gut's trumpet could not induce the monkey from his perch. There's only one chance left, thought Jones. Bring Lilyan Smithln Lilyan was hurriedly brought to the scene. At the Hrst sight of her the Gastonia knew his cook was goosedf' Aw, Nertslv he cried and fell out of the tree.
