--. 3 Mlkgzibg.: wt. -,,,,. , CAPTAIN LAWRENCE EDWIN STAHL, U. S. NAVY COMPHIBRON TEN Captain Lawrence Edwin Stahl was born on April 22, I923 in Big Rapids, Michigan. Raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he was graduated from high school there in I94O and attended the University of Notre Dame until he entered the U.,S. Naval Academy in I942 as a member of the class of I946, After graduation in June I945, Ensign Stahlcompleted Submarine School at New London, Connecticut in December I945. From January I946 until August l952, Lieutenant Stahl served on board the submarines ENTEMEDOR, VOLADOR, CATFISH and MENADEN in many billets, includingcommunications, electronics, gunnery, operations, and engineering. In I948, he was a member of the precom- missioning detail of USS VOLADOR at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In I950, as Engineer Officer of USS CATFISH, he participated in a number of reconnaissance patrols in connection with the Korean hostilities. He served in USS MENHADEN as both Operations Officer and Executive Officer. Lieutenant Stahl attended the U. S. Naval Post-Graduate School, Monterey, California from August I952 to ,june I954, when he was graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Operations Analysis and also a Master of Science Degree. Returning to the Fleet, Lieutenant Stahl served a short tour on the Staff, Submarine Develop- ment Group II in New London, followedvby an assignment as Executive Officer in USS TENCH. Subsequently, he was ordered to the precommissioningdetail at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard of USS SAILFISH, again as Executive Officer. From May I957 to April I959, Lieutenant Commander Stahl was attached to the Staff, Com- mander Operations Development Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet as Assistant CIC Officer. In this billet, he was a Project Officer responsible for the fleet evaluation and acceptance of new electronics equipment. , Lieutenant Commander Stahl commanded the submarine USS SEA POACHER from June l959 until July I96l, receiving the Navy Commendation Medal' in June I96l upon completion ofthat tour. From SEA POACHER, Commander Stahl returned to further graduate professional training during I96l-62 at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, the POLARIS Prospective Commanding Officers' Course at Dam Neck, Virginia, and the Nuclear Weapons Training Center in Norfolk, Virginia., Upon completion of this training, he was assigned in May I962 to the joint Strategic'Target Planning Staff, Offutt Air Force,Base,.Omaha, Nebraska and served for over two years as a Nuclear Weapons Operational Planner representing the POLARIS Weapons System. ' In August I964, Commander Stahl reported to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as the Prospective Executive Officer for the precommissioning detail of USS SIMON LAKE, the lead ship of the third generation POLARIS submarine tenders. He served in SIMON LAKE for over 27 months through. completion of construction and commissioning,.shakedown training in Pearl Harbor, a year on the line tending POLARIS submarines at Charleston, South Carolina and then the overseas deployment to Holy Loch, Scotland. ' When he was detached in October I966, Captain Stahl reported to Washington, D. C. for duty in the Office of Program Appraisal, a staff office of the Secretary of the Navy. During this tour, he served as Assistant Chief, Special Studies and Objectives Division with his primary responsi- bilities concentrated in the area of Navy Strategic Programs. In August I968 he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal CGoId Star in lieu of second awardj.. The Office of Program Appraisal served as a primary consultant body to the Secretary of the Navy in developing and supporting Department of the Navy positions on force levels, weapons systems and major programs. From October I968 to October I969, Captain Stahl was Commanding Officer, USS RALEIGH CLPD-ID as part of the Amphibious Force, U. S.
