FHBT COMMANDER FRANCIS W. ENGLISH, JR., USN Commander Francis, W. English, jr. was born in Long Eddy, New York. He attended the New York State Maritime Academy in I944, graduating in I946 with a commission as Ensign, USNR, and a Merchant Marine Deck Officer's licens-e. From I946-i956 he sailed as a deck officer for various east coast shipping companies. , Commander English began his active Navy career in August of l956, when he was assigned as First Lieutenant aboard the USS YORKTOWN CCVA-IOD. He served in this billet until July of i959 when he was ordered to General Line School at Monterey, California. Upon completion of Line School in May of l96O, he reported to the USS EVERSOLE CDD-7895 homeported with DESRON 3 in Yokosuka, Japan. While aboard EVERSOLE he served as Gunnery Officer and Operations Officer. ln January of l962, Commander English assumed command of Mine Division 3l and the USS VIREO CMSC-2051 homeported at Sasebo, Japan. He held this billet until August of l963 when he reported for duty as an instructor in the Naval Warfare Department of the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, California. While at Monterey, he earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts Clnternational Relationsj. 'E ln May of I966, Commander English left Monterey and assumed command of the USS SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY CLST-l l22J, a billet which he held until November of I967, when he reported for duty with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the National Military Command Center, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He served the last year of his tour with JCS as a National Military Command Center Representative to the Department of State.iFor his service with ,ICS he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal and Citation for Distinguished Meritorious Service. ln December of I969, Commander English reported aboard the USS CORONADO CLPD-l U HS Executive Officer. Upon completion of this tour in September of l97l ,g he reported to the Commander Defense Contract Administration Services Region San l:f8HCiSCOfBurlingame, California- CORONADOS EXECUTIVE OFFICER
