THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER HOWARD E. MINITER, JR. COMMANDER, USN 0 Commander Howard E. Miniter, Jr. was born in Bridgeport., Connecti- cut. He attended grade schools in New York City, and the United States Naval Academy graduating in l957. Upon commissioning he served in the USS SARATOGA CCVA-607 as five inch Battery Officer. ln I9 59 after completing instruction at the Atlantic Fleet Destroyer Force Engineer- ing School he assumed duties as Engineering Officer aboard the USS ENGLISH QDD-6965. In June l96l Commander Miniter was ordered to George Washington University where he earned a Masters Degree in Engineering Manage- ment. From l962 to I964 he was an instructor in the Marine Engineering Department, at the United States Naval Academy. In' August I964 Commander Miniter assumed command of the USS MONMOUTH COUNTY ll.ST-I032J. In May I966 he assumed duties as Executive Officer aboard the USS R. A. OWENS IDD-8275. On completion of this tour in October I967 Commander Miniter reported to the Com- mandant 3rd Naval District for temporary duty as Officer in Charge Activation!Training Team of the Phillipine Naval Ship RPS DATU KALANTIAW QPS-765 lex- USS BOOTH CDE-l7OJ. In April l968 after DATU KALANTIAW departed for her homeport in Manilla, Republic of the Phillipines, he reported for duty in the General Planning and Program- ming Division in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Commander.,,Miniter is married to the former Frances Tiedemann of Howard Beach, New York. They have two daughters, Beverly and Jenienne, and reside in Annapolis, Maryland. D. M. CAPTAIN SYLVESTER R. FOLEY, JR., USN Captain Foley, born in Manchester, New Hampshire, is the son of Commander CRETJ and Mrs. S. R. Foley of Mount Dora, Florida. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in I95O andtwas designated a Naval Aviator in I952. His first operational assignment was with Composite Squadron FOUR for a four year tour and numerous deployments as a night fighter pilot. In I956 he returned to the Naval Academy for duty in the Seamanship and Navigation Department. This was followed by a tour in Attack Squadron THIRTY-SIX aboard USS SARATOGA. After completing the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, Captain Foley was assigned to the Staff of Commander in Chief U. S. Naval Forces Europe as Aviation Readiness and Training Officer. During the Tour in London, England, he completed basic airborne training with the U. S. Army Special Forces. In I965 Captain Foley reported as Executive Officer of Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED SIX and a year later assumed command of the squadron. During his command tour in the Mediterranean and WESTPAC, VA-IO6 was awarded the COMNAVAIRLANT E . Captain Foley graduated with distinction from the Air War College in Mont- gomery, Alabama. He also holds a Master of Science degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. In I968!69 Captain Foley was Commander Attack Carrier Air Wing ELEVEN in USS KITTY HAWK during combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin. Following that tour he reported to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations where he served on the Air Weapons Systems Analysis Staff COP-OSWJ and in- Tactical Aviation Plans COP-5085. He has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Air Medal C9J, Navy Commendation Medal CZJ, Navy Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation and various other campaign medals. Captain Foley assumed commandof CORONADO in August of I97l. Captain Foley is married tothe former Kathleen MacDonald of Scranton, Pennsylvania. They have four children, Robert, Maureen, Brenda and Christopher.
