NAVY COMPHIBRON TEN Captain Lawrence Edwin Stahl was born on April 22, I923 in Big Rapids, Michigan. Raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he was graduated from high school there in I94O and attended the University of Notre Dame until he entered the U.,S. Naval Academy in I942 as a member of the class of I946, After graduation in June I945, Ensign Stahlcompleted Submarine School at New London, Connecticut in December I945. From January I946 until August l952, Lieutenant Stahl served on board the submarines ENTEMEDOR, VOLADOR, CATFISH and MENADEN in many billets, includingcommunications, electronics, gunnery, operations, and engineering. In I948, he was a member of the precom- missioning detail of USS VOLADOR at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In I950, as Engineer Officer of USS CATFISH, he participated in a number of reconnaissance patrols in connection with the Korean hostilities. He served in USS MENHADEN as both Operations Officer and Executive Officer. Lieutenant Stahl attended the U. S. Naval Post-Graduate School, Monterey, California from August I952 to ,june I954, when he was graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Operations Analysis and also a Master of Science Degree. Returning to the Fleet, Lieutenant Stahl served a short tour on the Staff, Submarine Develop- ment Group II in New London, followedvby an assignment as Executive Officer in USS TENCH. Subsequently, he was ordered to the precommissioningdetail at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard of USS SAILFISH, again as Executive Officer. From May I957 to April I959, Lieutenant Commander Stahl was attached to the Staff, Com- mander Operations Development Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet as Assistant CIC Officer. In this billet, he was a Project Officer responsible for the fleet evaluation and acceptance of new electronics equipment. , Lieutenant Commander Stahl commanded the submarine USS SEA POACHER from June l959 until July I96l, receiving the Navy Commendation Medal' in June I96l upon completion ofthat tour. From SEA POACHER, Commander Stahl returned to further graduate professional training during I96l-62 at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, the POLARIS Prospective Commanding Officers' Course at Dam Neck, Virginia, and the Nuclear Weapons Training Center in Norfolk, Virginia., Upon completion of this training, he was assigned in May I962 to the joint Strategic'Target Planning Staff, Offutt Air Force,Base,.Omaha, Nebraska and served for over two years as a Nuclear Weapons Operational Planner representing the POLARIS Weapons System. ' In August I964, Commander Stahl reported to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as the Prospective Executive Officer for the precommissioning detail of USS SIMON LAKE, the lead ship of the third generation POLARIS submarine tenders. He served in SIMON LAKE for over 27 months through. completion of construction and commissioning,.shakedown training in Pearl Harbor, a year on the line tending POLARIS submarines at Charleston, South Carolina and then the overseas deployment to Holy Loch, Scotland. ' When he was detached in October I966, Captain Stahl reported to Washington, D. C. for duty in the Office of Program Appraisal, a staff office of the Secretary of the Navy. During this tour, he served as Assistant Chief, Special Studies and Objectives Division with his primary responsi- bilities concentrated in the area of Navy Strategic Programs. In August I968 he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal CGoId Star in lieu of second awardj.. The Office of Program Appraisal served as a primary consultant body to the Secretary of the Navy in developing and supporting Department of the Navy positions on force levels, weapons systems and major programs. From October I968 to October I969, Captain Stahl was Commanding Officer, USS RALEIGH CLPD-ID as part of the Amphibious Force, U. S. CAPTAIN, USN QORO 4 09 ff X ,I Ni We I XX x il N -.d f , CAPTAIN SYLVESTER R. FOLEY, JR., USN Captain Foley, born in Manchester, New Hampshire, is the son of Commander CRETJ and Mrs. S. R. Foley of Mount Dora, Florida. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in I95O andtwas designated a Naval Aviator in I952. His first operational assignment was with Composite Squadron FOUR for a four year tour and numerous deployments as a night fighter pilot. In I956 he returned to the Naval Academy for duty in the Seamanship and Navigation Department. This was followed by a tour in Attack Squadron THIRTY-SIX aboard USS SARATOGA. After completing the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, Captain Foley was assigned to the Staff of Commander in Chief U. S. Naval Forces Europe as Aviation Readiness and Training Officer. During the Tour in London, England, he completed basic airborne training with the U. S. Army Special Forces. In I965 Captain Foley reported as Executive Officer of Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED SIX and a year later assumed command of the squadron. During his command tour in the Mediterranean and WESTPAC, VA-IO6 was awarded the COMNAVAIRLANT E . Captain Foley graduated with distinction from the Air War College in Mont- gomery, Alabama. He also holds a Master of Science degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. In I968!69 Captain Foley was Commander Attack Carrier Air Wing ELEVEN in USS KITTY HAWK during combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin. Following that tour he reported to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations where he served on the Air Weapons Systems Analysis Staff COP-OSWJ and in- Tactical Aviation Plans COP-5085. He has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Air Medal C9J, Navy Commendation Medal CZJ, Navy Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation and various other campaign medals. Captain Foley assumed commandof CORONADO in August of I97l. Captain Foley is married tothe former Kathleen MacDonald of Scranton, Pennsylvania. They have four children, Robert, Maureen, Brenda and Christopher. THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER HOWARD E. MINITER, JR. COMMANDER, USN 0 Commander Howard E. Miniter, Jr. was born in Bridgeport., Connecti- cut. He attended grade schools in New York City, and the United States Naval Academy graduating in l957. Upon commissioning he served in the USS SARATOGA CCVA-607 as five inch Battery Officer. ln I9 59 after completing instruction at the Atlantic Fleet Destroyer Force Engineer- ing School he assumed duties as Engineering Officer aboard the USS ENGLISH QDD-6965. In June l96l Commander Miniter was ordered to George Washington University where he earned a Masters Degree in Engineering Manage- ment. From l962 to I964 he was an instructor in the Marine Engineering Department, at the United States Naval Academy. In' August I964 Commander Miniter assumed command of the USS MONMOUTH COUNTY ll.ST-I032J. In May I966 he assumed duties as Executive Officer aboard the USS R. A. OWENS IDD-8275. On completion of this tour in October I967 Commander Miniter reported to the Com- mandant 3rd Naval District for temporary duty as Officer in Charge Activation!Training Team of the Phillipine Naval Ship RPS DATU KALANTIAW QPS-765 lex- USS BOOTH CDE-l7OJ. In April l968 after DATU KALANTIAW departed for her homeport in Manilla, Republic of the Phillipines, he reported for duty in the General Planning and Program- ming Division in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. ' f ' fl!! CORONADO'S FIRST CDMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN GRANT J. WALKER, USN Captain Grant J. Walkerlwasborn in Ramey, Pennsylvania. He attended Pennsylvania State University and Georgia Tech in the Navy V-I2 Program and then entered midshipman training at Columbia University in March l945. Upon commissioning in july l945, he served ,in the USS CHANDELEUR CAV-IOJ in gunnery billets. Aboard the ROCKINGHAM QAPA-2295 he participated in the initial atomic bomb tests at BIKINI ATOLL in I946. In I947, he attended the General Line School in Newport, R. I., going from there to the USS YOSEMITE QAD-l9J as Communications Officer, then to the USS NEWPORT NEWS CCA-I48J as CIC Officer for two years and Fire Control Officer for an additional year. ' From june I953 to june l955, he instructed at the CIC Officers School in Glenview, Illinois. After this tour, he assumed the duties as Squadron Operations Officer in DESRON SIX. From August I957 until November I958, he served as Executive Officer on the USS C. P., CECIL CDRR-8351. On completion of this tour, he reported to the Staff of Commander Destroyer Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet as Personnel Representative, in Enlisted Personnel Distribution Office, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. ' In ,lune l96l, Lieutenant Commander Walker assumed command of the USS JOSEPH K. TAUSSIG KDE-IOBOJ, leaving in july I963 to attend the U. S. Naval War College. Upon completion of Naval Warfare Course, he remained on the War College Staff as an instructor in Senior Foreign Officers' course. In january I966, Commander Walker assumed command of the USS WADDELL CDDG-24D. During this tour, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal and a gold star in lieu of a second award and the Navy Commendation Medal. In july I967, Captain Walker reported to the Staff of Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force Seventh Fleet CCTG 70.8fCCDF 35 as Operations Officer. In this assignment, a second Navy Commendation Medal was awarded him. In January I969, he reported for duty in the Strike Warfare Division in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. In November I969, Captain Walker assumed command of the USS CORONADO CLPD-I IJ. Upon completion of this tour in August l97I,'he reported to Commander Amphibious Group Two, as Chief of Staff for Operations, FHBT COMMANDER FRANCIS W. ENGLISH, JR., USN Commander Francis, W. English, jr. was born in Long Eddy, New York. He attended the New York State Maritime Academy in I944, graduating in I946 with a commission as Ensign, USNR, and a Merchant Marine Deck Officer's licens-e. From I946-i956 he sailed as a deck officer for various east coast shipping companies. , Commander English began his active Navy career in August of l956, when he was assigned as First Lieutenant aboard the USS YORKTOWN CCVA-IOD. He served in this billet until July of i959 when he was ordered to General Line School at Monterey, California. Upon completion of Line School in May of l96O, he reported to the USS EVERSOLE CDD-7895 homeported with DESRON 3 in Yokosuka, Japan. While aboard EVERSOLE he served as Gunnery Officer and Operations Officer. ln January of l962, Commander English assumed command of Mine Division 3l and the USS VIREO CMSC-2051 homeported at Sasebo, Japan. He held this billet until August of l963 when he reported for duty as an instructor in the Naval Warfare Department of the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, California. While at Monterey, he earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts Clnternational Relationsj. 'E ln May of I966, Commander English left Monterey and assumed command of the USS SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY CLST-l l22J, a billet which he held until November of I967, when he reported for duty with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the National Military Command Center, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He served the last year of his tour with JCS as a National Military Command Center Representative to the Department of State.iFor his service with ,ICS he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal and Citation for Distinguished Meritorious Service. ln December of I969, Commander English reported aboard the USS CORONADO CLPD-l U HS Executive Officer.
