by Veronica Thomas aacdiugbnud Aigkafemp' HI'd like to thank the school and faculty for their support, because when we travel we represent every- one at Coronado, not just our- selves, said Mr. Ed Meier. The Coronado Dons Marching Band has been directed by Mr. Meier for the past five years. The band consisted of 184 members and 15 staff members. The drum majors were Leslie Franklin and Shiela Byrd. The band did very well at their performances this year. They re- ceived a superior rating at NAU Band Day and hosted an invita- tional. At the Grand Nationals in Indiana, the band placed 17th out of47. Also, the band won superior with distinction at state. They were the first band in the history of Ari- zona to win one pluses in each category. The special categories they won were: Drum Majors, Marching, Music, Percussion, and Auxillary. Preparation for events like these included choosing music and find- ing out when tryouts were sched- uled. For the band, the perfor- mances also meant long hours of practice. Members practiced dur- ing the summer in the morning, at night, and at home, along with all- day practices on Saturdays. The marching band was a good experience for everyone involved and people interested in band were encouraged to join. MR. ED MEIER, band director, gives an in- spirational speech to the band members. The Wind Ensemble took on a new idea- performing in the round as individuals as well as in small groups. Since Wind Ensemble was taken as a regular class students tned hard and gave their best ef- fort to achieve a good grade as well as a good performance With four concerts held this year, stu- dents helped one another adjust to the new kind of performance style. That style was accompanied by all types of music to please ev- eryone's taste. The Varsity Chorus performed three concerts this year at Corona- do in December, March, and in May. Aside from the other perfor- mances, they performed at the elementary and middle schools in the district. They performed Broadway Pop, popular tunes, and later on in the year they added on a classical style of music. Leighanne Simmers, Varsity Chorus teacher, remarked, 'llf you are enjoying the class, you be- m .. ,,,, . .. ,,,,,,, Mm '-asm-nm' . . . , . I X X ' I . . . I I . . . ' f X . . .
