Swimming the last mile to victory 'XS Q, -tfia Q l sk' 1 by Sue Shoenfeld - EJ ' Although this year was not as successful as hoped, many individuals did very well: for example captain, senior Rich Barton did exceptionally well in the breaststroke. As the coach for 17 years, Paul Thornberg, hopes to have more swimmers and divers dedicated to the sport and willing to work hard enough to excel. Practice was held everyday at El- dorado pool from 2:50 to 4:00. The meets were usually held on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 4:00 P.lVl.! PHIL THORHBURGH SWIMS the breast- stroke. Photo by Baribeau by Sandy Del Greco WYE Starting out this season with all new players ex- cept returnee Junior Amy Mills, the team did quite well. This year was a real challenge for all new incoming badminton players, be- cause they have never played bad- minton before as a team. This was a very successful year for all. These girls have learned a lot and are going to make a great team next year, stated Coach Karen Maglich. Opening the season the team played Gilbert. J.V. girls won their matches 5-4, while the varsity lost, but that didn't bring them dovim. At their next match against South Mountain they had a sweeping success as both teams won their matches 9-O. Junior JoAnn Benavidez and Sophomore Jessie Seible repre- sented Coronado in doubles at state competition held at Chapar- ral I-ligh School. Considering this was the first time for most of us, we had a successful year. Going to state I learned a lot and I am look- ing forward to next years season to start, stated Benavidez, one of the doubles players. At the end of the season Jessie, Seible and Edra Phillips were giv- en an award for most improved players. Badminton 155
