The students of Coronado High School relived The Wild Wild Westn for homecoming this year. Tuesday started off the week with the movie JEREMIAH JOHN- SON. The homecoming court was presented Wednesday afternoon at the queen's assembly. The Girls of the West were Shelley Howells, Christi Koppisch, Brenda Liester, Tami Reinhard, and Anne Stavig. That evening, a real Western Hoe- down took place. Thursday the Cougars saw the Terrors go up in smoke and a very surprised Anne Stavig was crowned queen. The Cougars whipped Palmer 39-O for a great homecoming victory. Satur- day morning, alumni joined their friends at the brunch. Ending the week was the dance, Daze of Gold. Music performed by Sterling helped make the dance a success. The Card Game was a popular skit in the queen's assembly Halftime performance presented Queen Anne Stavig and her court. On October 15 and 16, a retreat was held at Emerald Valley Ranch for students and faculty of Coronado. Participants learned to work together and discussed leadership, nature, Outward Bound, and even cooking. A dance was also included in the group activities. The retreat proved to be a time of learning and meeting new friends, Students and teachers to discuss problems, new ideas, and experiences. The annual Coronado Talent Show, held on November 18, proved to be a great success. After taking first place awards, Jones, Fontana and Company, a rock group, and singerfguitarist, Rich Weatherbee, represented Coronado in the All- City Talent Show on February 2, 1977. Becky Kovel and Lorraine Wallace plan strategy to whip sur- prised males. Steve Hye headed pep assemblies this year. The assemblies were highlighted by cheers and skits put together by members of the morale committee, which included song and yell leaders and various other Cou- gars. Class competition, involving tricycle races, eat- ing chocolate-syrup dipped donuts, and undressing in sleeping bags, was both exciting and entertaining. Speeches were made by athletic captains and awards, such as the Spirit Stick, were presented by song and yell leaders. Pep Assemblies helped to keep the Cou- gar Spirit alive. A Powder-Puff foot- ball game, in which the girls got to wear the shoulder pads, got the week off to a rousing start. The dance started off the season with Punch providing the mu- sic. The following week the tree lighting ceremony, assembly, and caroling took place. At the assembly, the Christmas Queen and King were crowned, Mary Lou Mullane and Dan King. This was the first year Coronado has ever had a Christ- mas King. The Christmas court included Linda Duffy and Kent Varner, Suzie Gearhart and B.J. Ruschioni, Cheryl Held and Bryan Gianesin, Bonnie Logsdon and Steve Hye, and Cindy Webb and Tadd Howard. Fun-Filled Drama Staged By Cougars Dave Rassmussen gets into his role as Teddy. Cindy Webb sees a ghost! Coronadois first play of the 1976-77 school year was the comedydrama The Ghost Train. All of the characters did an excellent job in protray- ing the story of how a spooky ghost train is used to transport narcotics. The main character, Dave Rass- mussen, played a comical Britisher, Teddy , the de- tective who cleverly solves the mystery. The play was a very suc- cessful one, and turned out better than expected, re- marked the director, Mrs. Linda Johnson, who is the new drama and speech teacher at Coronado. Mrs. Johnson expresseed the fact that she greatly enjoyed working with the students and crew. The play con- sumed six weeks of plan- ning. One day of this week was a dress up day devoted to the fashions of the l920's. It was not unusual to see someone walking down the hall in knickers or flapper dresses. The queen's assembly proved to be unique when the queens were presented in a 1929 Model A Ford. At the dance Kim Sickinger was crowned Sweetheart queen. 'fn W 1-ww Football Season Shows Best Team Effort Yet. An enthused Cougar football team started off the season with the finest playing Coronado football has ever seen. The players, full of potential, carried out an excellent season. One of the earliest highlights was the win over Palmer. The Cougars scored more points against Palmer than any other team at Coronado has in any single contest, giving them their first shut-out, 39-0. Remarked Head Coach Brian Beveridge, As the season started, the team was the finest the school had ever seen. The biggest highlight was prob- -Qss ably the game against Mitchell. Even though we lost in overtime 14-13, it was one of the best games played. Team captains were Senior Jerry Lewis, also selected MVP, and Junior Quarterback Bob Carter. The coaching staff consist- ed of Mr. Brian Beveridge, Mr. Fred Longhart, Mr. Dick Elliot and Mr. Mark Buchanan. A determined Coach Beveridge studies the team's next play. Produces Fine Cougar Gridders The J.V. team had a difficult but good 1976-77 season. The record was three and sixg but according to head coach Paul Han- sen, the team deserved a six - three record instead. Coach Hansen felt the team con- sisted of a fine bunch of players who have a great future in football. They were a young team with most of the girls coming from the junior class. Forty girls went out for the team, which is more than in previous years. One highlight of the season was when the Cougar swimmers beat Wasson for the first time, 42 to 41. There were four girls who qualified for state: Joan Egger, Karen Anderson, Carol Lucke, and Diane Bobbitt. Karen placed fifth in individual medley and sixth in 500 free. Most valuable player awards were given to Joan Egger and Karen Anderson. Joan Egger was also the captain for the team. Manager for the swim team was Senior Lynn Holloway. The 1976-77 golf season turned out to be a rough one for the Cougars. The team was a fairly young one consisting of all juniors. According to Head Coach Larry Nicks, next year will be their year. Co- captains this year were Richard Newendyke and Hart Peterson. They also both shared most valuable player honors. The golf team placed sixth in the City League and ninth in the South Central league. Their best overall score of the season was 326. Coach Larry Nicks predicts big things for next year. This year was a very memorable one for the Corona- do volleyball team, The girls ended their season with a 14-3 record. They played and won together as a team, and beat both Wasson and Widefield who were co- league champions. Coming up from fourth in the league to second, the Cougars then went to district play-offs. Here many fans watched the Coronado vol- leyball team become District Champion and State Qualifier by beating Pueblo County. At state, the team went against its toughest competition, Arvada West. Here the team lost 7-15, 10-15, then in consolation competition, Adams City gave the team their second lose 9-15, 9-15. This was the team's first year to go to State, and they were bursting with talent and experience. A 4-2 victory over Mitchell stood out as a highlight of the season. Another bright spot was Kevin Coleman's im- proved record of 7-5. He was also voted the most valuable player this year. Coach Larry Nicks said that the success of the season was due to the team balance and the individual competitiveness. The highlight of the season was the grapplers' victory over Harrison, a team which was in contention for the league championship. Serving as co-captains for the team were Gary Archuleta, Tracy Lang, and Kirk Smith. When the tournament comes, weill be a definite force. Head Coach Dick Powell felt that even though the team was mostly composed of underclassmen, their strength was squad depth. Highlighting the season were te- nacious defensive efforts by Bob Mooney and Jim Hadley, along with aggressive offensive work by Tim Beaudin, Chris Keenan, and Bob Carter. Each cager made a vital contribution to the team, and with eight lettermen returning next year the prospects for the '78 season are high, remarked Coach Powell. The team was coached by Mr. Steve Pose- gate and assisting him was Mr. Jim Asher. They were a hard- working team with many good players even though they did not have many wins. According to head coach Mr. Posegate, '5The players were good and showed much potential even though their record was not that good. The highlight of the season was the team's first game of the year when they beat the Wheatridge Farmers, who had a record of 142 straight wins. The team lost many good play- ers to the Varsity squad, but Coach Posegate feels that helping to build the Varsity team is the main purpose of the J.V. squad. Another highlight came in the form of brothers, name- ly Chuck and Bill Kessler. The Kesslers joined the team at mid-season and, according to Coach Richard Stetson, they gave us the scoring punch that we needed and rounded out an already good teamf' Coach Stetson also commented that the team possessed an excellent goal- tender, Paul Gardiner and team leader, Drew Austin. The Honor Guard presented the flags at all varsity home sports events, at the State Swim meet, and the State Cheerleading competition. The two girls had a few money-making projects this year, such as selling bubble gum and pencils. This money was used to buy letters for their uniforms. The 1976-77 Varsity yell leaders not only proved to be the best last summer at the United Spirit Association camp in Logan, Utah, but also succeeded in bringing home a superior trophy from the state contest in January. Among the awards received at camp was the 49'ers award, the top award at the camp, which included a S100 scholarship. Although the squad had only two guys instead of six this year, it did not affect their quality. Full of enthusiasm and spirit, this year's varsity songleading squad kept the Coronado tradition by being named state champs. The squad was a rela- tively new one this year with only two returning girls. They attended the U.S.A. yell and song lead- ing camp this summer in Logan, Utah, and received a third place trophy and eighty-one ribbons. The squad then competed in the state competition, in which they received a superior trophy and became state champions. This was a hard-working squad that supported all sports events and participated in many school events and pep assemblies. The squad's success would not have been as great without the help of their sponsor, Miss Pat Calahan. This year the juniors had an admirable amount of suc- cess, as they sold every one of the trees. They were assisted by Colo- rado Springs Teachers' Associ- ation CC.S.T.A.j. The money that they earned was used to give the seniors a memorable prom. Besides the tree sale, juniors also sold shakers, caramel apples, and raffled off a game ball during basketball season. QQ OO O Dedication Pays Off For Chamber Singers The Coronado Chamber Sing- ers are a special group of singers selected from Chorale. They sing with the Chorale as well as per- form their own special concerts. Chamber Singers attended the State Madrigal Test, and were chosen as one of the six best Chamber Singer groups in the state. They held special programs at West and Holmes Junior High, and gave a Christmas con- cert at Buena Vista Elementary. Sightreading is a kind of exam to test the students' ability in reading music. It has not been used in many schools before, and Mr. Buck, Chorale director, was not sure how well it would work out. He did say that Chorale was a group of very talented students and he was sure they would do the best job they could. For-E iv? Yearbook Staff Makes Good Timesw Happen The Recuerdos staff chose the theme Good Times for the l976-77 year- book. Co-editors Shelley Howells and LeRae Wagner decided to use student poetry related to the theme in the opening section. This year's staff was happy to offer for the first time a sup- plement including coverage of all spring sports, prom, and graduation activities. Coronado once again hosted the an- nual yearbook clinic, which was at- tended by more than nineteen schools. Advisors this year were Mrs. Kathy Mathers and Mrs. Linda Kroll. C' ' W E ,fi Drama Club Students Present Three Plays The Ghost Train, The Skin of Our Teeth and '6Take Her, She's Mine were all plays performed by the drama club this year. Mrs. Linda Johnson was the new club sponsor. The students in drama club were busy during the year practicing, perfect- ing, and performing the three plays. Most of the money from the ticket sales for the play, The Skin of Our Teeth,', was donated to the Colorado Wild- life Association for the protection of endangered species. Mrs. Johnson concentrates on a play rehearsal. Organizes New Program VICA CVocational Industrial Clubs of Amer- icaj is a club for all students in vocational classes. The club consists of students from electronics, drafting, graphic arts, auto, and building con- struction. This year they met early Monday and Tuesday mornings for half hour periods. They also held breakfast meetings once a month. These meetings were devised to encourage leadership in the students. VICA's main project for this year was to reor- ganize their program. To start off the year they had a successful bake sale. They later attended the South Central Leadership Conference and competed in the fol- lowing categories: market place, adver- tising display, job interviews, public speaking, sales demonstration, and testing skills in different businesses. DECA again helped sponsor its annual Christmas program for under-privi- leged children, providing gifts, refresh- ments, entertainment, and several Christmas trees. The radio show was aired every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings and every night after school. The show broadcasted school announcements, general informa- tion on community activities, and commentaries on controversial subjects. The club also did inter- mittent shows on various local ra- dio stations. The club's main goal was to im- prove relations and communica- tion between all factions of the school. O M Classroom Time Lengthened In Math Classes This year Coronado math students gained addition- al fifteen minutes in their math classes, according to Mr. Robert Pankratz, department chariman. It now became possible for them to take the permit test in class instead of going to the License Bureau.
