Creative Writing, Basic and Advanced Composition, Advanced Research, Practical English are among the courses taught at Coronado. Teachers stressed the impor- tance of research, creativity, effectiveness in writing. New classes have brought the different levels of grades together. Now, freshmen, sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors can take the same classes. 46 Horizons widen with language skills 48 The first levels of language courses are designed for students with limited or no preparation in the language. Spanish, German, French, Hebrew and Latin courses teach students more than just a second language. Stu- dents learn skill building in the written language, including self expression and analysis of other peoples works. Students also learn to correspond with others by the use of verbs and adjec- tives. Upper levels of languages introduce students to literature through short stories, novels and short dramas. In learning their language, stu- dents used a variety of methods to get the message across. Stu- dents wrote original plays, poems, and short stories for grades. Many were produced in front of their classes and for other classes. 49 50 Current events make future history (la VaX -ol. History is being made today in the United States Government. The Watergate affair has exploded the White House wide open. Students in government classes have had the unique experience to study these events as they have occurred. History of the past is offered in Western Man and Western Settlement. Topics included, the mining days, trading, farming and the old west. Other courses offered in History were World Religions, Civilizations, World Geography, Economics, American Culture and Sociology. Classes used a variety of ways to research their history, from films, the library and in doing oral and written reports. 51 52 Math is used in all walks of life From sending rockets to the moon to tripling a recipe, math is a necessary part of everyday life. At Coronado courses in math vary from the fundamentals, Introduction to Function and Polygrams, Liniar Relations, Weather Forecasting, Integrated Mathematics, Pattern Analysis and Basic Logic and Problem Solving. Logic and Congruences, Complex Number Operations and Vectors, Circular Functions, and the Theory of Quadratics. Personal Finance, Private Enter- prise Mathematics are other courses designed to help the stu- dents later in life. 53 Experimenting with life in science MW) Scientists today and in the future must use all the knowledge at their command to solve our nations population problems, destruction of environment and energy shortage. At Coronado, the Science Depart- ment hopes to instill in its students with a greater understanding of todays world and problems. The Advanced Science students are on their own to research, experi- ment and study topics of their choice. The results of their experiments are entered in contests with students from other schools for grants and scholarships. Cell Biology, Continuity of Life, Energy and Matter, Ecology, Advanced Microbiology and many more courses are taught with the emphasis being on survival in our environment. 54 55 56 Variety offered in musical studies Every course a musician desires. That is what Coronado students have been offered in the field of music. With A-band. B-band. music theory, stage band, guitar and orchestra, Coronado has given musical inclined students a vari- ety of courses to inhance their creativity. Both the A and B band com- prised Coronado’s Marching Band which won a first division at the Marching Contest held at Austin High School. 57 Speech and Drama explores talents Speech and drama departments work diligently all year to prod- uce their plays and tournaments. Classes like stage craft and play production help to bring out productions like “Oliver.’' Other classes such as pantomine, read- er's theater, and play analysis give insight into the play itself. Debate prepares for participa- tion in speech and debate tour- naments. 58 59 Future home lives planned today Still another normally segre- gated class. Home Economics goes coed with the installation of a boy into the Homemaking I class. He along with the girls, learns how to prepare a bal- anced meal, manage money, and shop comparatively in anticipa- tion of the eventual home leav- ing. The problems of today, careers, dating relationships, and clothing skills are discussed in order to clearly relate people to themselves. Marriage aspects are important in these classes, relat- ing subjects covered plus the addition of children to the fam- ily. Students take responsibility in Ag Agriculture is where students learn farming, record keeping, and equipment maintenance and repair. Also, students learn land- scaping and home beautifica- tion. Horticulture gives instruction in greenhouse operation, the grow- ing of plants, and landscaping. Students also learn the differ- ences in insecticides, fertilizers, and the pruning of plants. Horti- culture is a two credit course taken for two hours. 61 Drafting prepares future architects Drafting is a basic class that can lead to a wide variety of careers in today’s progressing world. Once the techniques are learned it can be followed into engineer- ing or developed in the prearchi- tectural courses offered at Coro- nado. Home floor plans are drawn according to the FHA Minimum Property Standards and the City Building Codes. All the necessities of a building are covered from plumbing to traffic patterns inside or outside of the structure. Machine skills taught in Business Business, a broad field difficult to master, is learned with a voca- tion in mind. Typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping are the back- ground to the diversity of careers available. Bookkeeping is devel- oped into office recording, figur- ing of wages, and social security and tax withholdings. Secretarial typing is polished and special occupation terminology is taught in advanced shorthand classes. 63 Students learn fine arts and crafts The artistic ability of many Coronado students revealed itself in several varied art classes. This year new arts are leather- crafts and jewelry design added to painting, sculpturing, drawing and macrame. Students learn the uses of the different tools they work with and started with the basic rules in design. 64 PE promotes good health The choice of Physical Educa- tion classes was broadened and filled with enthusiastic students this year. Besides the regular classes in tennis, modern dance, and health, self defense, gymnas- tics, and personal conditioning were included. Sections were developed for team sports such as basketball, volleyball, and soccer. Such are the classes set up to develope physical fitness and provide mental release from the tension of a normal school day. Journalism tells it like it is Journalism teaches newswriting, sports writing, copy editing, and advertising. Also new this year was the Photography class which learned about cameras and darkroom procedures. The annual and newspaper staffs reported accurately to the student body the current news pertaining to the students at Coronado. ROTC develops military techniques ROTC prepares both young men and women for a promising future in tomorrow’s military defense. They receive instruction in map reading, first aid, mark- smanship, and military history of the United States. I am very tired, very sad, but most of all, very relieved. I never really knew what went into the production of a yearbook, but I was determined to become a part of it someday. Last year I was. but this year, the yearbook became a part of me and now neither of us will ever be the same. The theme “What is a Legend? was a product of long hours of planning, arguing, frustration and most of all — hard work. To a few of us, it was worth it. It has meant missing classes, giving up weekends, holidays and spare time. The goal we strove for has never or will ever be achieved — a perfect yearbook. We strove to create a book we could be proud of and in turn make the student body proud for the most part. If I had to do it all again, something tells me I couldn’t because this year was an experience I will never or want to forget. I sincerely hope next year’s editor will receive more cooperation from the faculty and administration. It is extremely difficult to put out a yearbook with as little cooperation as we've had, but as you see. it can be done. The Journalism Department is one of the hardest working departments at this school, yet receives little or no recognition from the students or administration. No one ever compliments their efforts, only criticizes. The one department working specifically for the students is treated as another unwanted extra curricular activity for those who never seem to get writers’ cramp. Maybe that will soon change. Finally, I would like to thank my staff: Julie Stone, Ghana Azar, Richard Sayklay. HONORS; Sally Smith and Marie Middagh, ACADEMICS; Yvonne Peralta, ORGANIZATIONS; Allie Gorman and Irma Estrada, SPORTS; Cecelia Hermosillo and Denise Tullos. PEOPLE; Allan Graves and Scott Ashkenaz. PHOTOGRAPHERS; and Robin Garner, DESIGN ARTIST. But the biggest thank you I owe is to our sponsor, Mrs. Clara Frost. She helped more in the production of this yearbook than any of us will ever realize and I hope she knows how much I appreciate what she has done. Despite all the setbacks, I think we have done the best job possible on the 1974 LEGEND. I’m finished assigning pictures to be taken, layouts to be changed, or copy to be retyped because it isn’t my responsibility anymore. This yearbook was mine up to now, but from this moment on, I reluc- tantly pass it to someone else. Robin Clay EDITOR 235 237 1
