On June 16, Cornell won it second straight III title with a decisive victory over the tough thrce- Miile Lake Onondaga course. The Big Red thus set itself up as the team to heat in the Olympic trials, held on the same Onondaga waters. Yale, who had shown once that it could del eat ( ornell, and the returning Navy Admirals. 1952 Olympic champions, were also considere l very strong contenders for the coveted trip to Mel- houriie. As expected, all three contenders reached ihe finals, setting the stage for the last, tense, win- ner-take-all ra(;e. In this stiuggle helween two powerful crews, each worthy of ()lym|iic honors. Yale ncjsed out the Big lli-d hy a scant lime- quarters of a length. Ihe jayvee and I rosh heavyweight seasons pre- sent a sharp contrast. Two liig initial vic- tories came o r|- avv and Syracii-i ' in r Cops Tropin Kegalta, and over Yale and Princeton in the (Carnegie Cup race. The second boat continued its winning ways by edging Penn in the Laslern Sprints at Washington, D. C. After a three and a half length rout of Syracuse, and a close loss to Penn, the junior varsity journeyed to tlie IRA Regatta on Lake Onondaga. Tiring after an early lead in the three-mile test, the Big Retl finished a length back of the University of W ashiiigton. The Irosh heavies, hampered by inex|)erience. couldn ' t match the fine records of the varsity and jiniior varsity. (A)ai ' h I llrich shifted his rowers constantly, attempting to find a wiiiTiing condjina- tion. Although failing to win a raci ' o cr the sea- son, the yearlings consistentK picked up seconds and thirds, and showed up better than expected in the large regattas.
