Our task has been merely to arrange these divisions in a logical and enter- taining order . . . and we have endeavored to choose and present those highlights which are most indicative of the activities ofthe students. For the central purpose of the Trillium is the presentation of a broad view of student life at Copiah-Lincoln. It every scene recalls a vivid memoryg if every face portrays a schoolmate and a triendg and it, in the larger sense, your annual be- comes a valued record which you can treasure always - then we of the Trillium staff of '48 have achieved our purpose. CGNTE T ADMINISTRATION ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES FEATURES ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS 4 DEDicAtlo Retrospectionl Reviewing the fullness of two short years reveals no greater memory than this, our devotion to a great personality. For her love of the great literature, her ability to discover our capabilities, her sparkling wit that obscures our shortcomings, we of the Sophomore Class of '48 affectionately dedicate this volume of the Trillium to Miss Bell Lindsey, a cherished friend, a brilliant teacher, and a great lady. 5 The Administration Building v ' 'T T ' 'V 5 1953-I are f The Faculty House W- 1 bl ,, , The Girls' Dormitory The Academic Building 6 -Q-L , The Entrance The Gym The Boys' Dormitory af , . , . f , . You have meant so much to Copiah- Lincoln as individuals and as a class. You are graduating from junior college at a time when your Country, State and Nation need upistanding Christian citizens and leaders, as never before. Your opportunity for service is unlimited. Your success will be measured in terms of the unselfish services you render to your fellowman and your C-od. Many of you have served your country well in time of war. C0-Ll ACTIVIT ES Extra-curricular activities play an important part in student lite at Copiah-Lincoln. Through the various religious and non-religious organiza- tions the student attains higher spiritual and mental development, at the same time, many students get a chance to develop the qualities of group leadership. At the end of the year, those who participated most in student activities receive medals, but all, even it they do not win medals, vividly remember the enjoyable parties sponsored by the clubs. 60 0. bs 4.1 I .JA 4 A' iff' 1 S. , , . , , .4,,. , 'f 9 js fn -3, Q t , V' T H 2. ftvw ' ,Q l . It is still and cool out here this twilight, certainly a perfect setting for put- ting chin-in-hand, forgetting the rush of today, and collecting a few thoughts. And as the precious memories flood my soul, the difficulty lies not in remembering, but in sorting and choosing those special recollections which stand as pinnacles in the year's events. Ob- viously, then, this is a prelude to a series of flashbacks, scanning the whole year, what l can recall l shall review, and all will remember with me. The Boys' Dormitory! Through the spray I can trace its outline - unadorned and rec- tangular - home for nearly two years. A life of ease - idleness, noise, loud talking . . . blaring radios - from lohn's Other Wife to that new, improved version of Tempta- tion . . . the Wanderers, seemingly having nothing to do, nonchalantly strolling from room to room, giving and receiving the latest news of the day . . . the feasts Csoup, sardines, and coffee - with variationsj after the ball games, or after a hard night's studying . . . staying up 'til all hours, cramming, playing the radio, dis- cussing the latest lobby prospects - or just any prospect . . . innumerable cold showers, with an accompaniment of doubtful language . . . the lyric-minded, led by Prof. Huddleston's resounding baritone, echoing some good old hymns . . . boys briefly playing jesse james . . . and then in january the fall of the axe - Bunyan-like . . . then harried instructors chasing booming firecrackers and robbing the light cord extensions . . . putting boys to bed early . . . finally the drab, dreary, monastic existence of studying and staying quiet and being gentleman-like . . . The Girls' Dormitoryl Changing my posi- tion on the rough fountain stones, l can see it - rectangular, too - rising three stories, gloomy and inviting, just beginning to be- come weathered with age, Card parties, varied piano selections and general socializing in the lobby, where anything should go but never does . . . and moving upstairs, a con- tinuity tand hang on, from here on it's rash theoryj . . , the fluttering of sentimental hearts . . . sisters sobbing out serious tragedies on fellow-sisters' shoulders . . . hope springing eternal in careful female plotting - round tables of joke telling - discussing until the wee hours the latest weighty problem . . . just not knowing what to wear unless one borrows something . . . writing long themes for mak- ing noise after lights out . . . students rigging up light extensions in clothes closets, with the greatest diligence Cthey will studyl . . . congre- gations in certain rooms, where loves, hopes, mistakes, conquests are discussed over steam- ing cocoa . . . one group talking about an- other, another talking about the one, a third talking about both . . . varied existence thisl The Schoolworkl I need only a meditative moment to recall the highlights, sorrows, fail- ures, one glance at the Academic Building suffices to stir many memories. Last minute changes into the sop courses, only to be disappointed . . . unbounding joy when the test is delayed, deepening gloom when what must be, must be . . . last minute rushing to complete research themes - the outline after the theme . . . eager eyes checking the long overdue Honor Roll . . . that terrible mental anguish before the first exams . . . tired and dejected freshmen stumbling from the audi- torium after English lOl exam . . . those an- noying daily tests, where the grade zooms downward . . . glowing pride on receiving a thumbs up on all those difficult courses . . . lt wasn't so badl And the teachers, each a study in human nature-how difficult to learn those little things that control the grade-book pencil! Cof course studying helps, theoretically? . . . Each with a horde of ever-recurring idiosyncrasies, a stock of pet, individuality-giving phrases: Ch, fiddle- sticks, playing to the pitsl i Well, bless your heart-an Old Soutl'1ernerl , That's beautiful chemistry, beautiful chemistry , Now I know of a case up in North Mississippi , I say now, girls , Bah, Senor 'Z Now zoology is the study of only the animal kingdom Now gesture with that upstage hand 'Q Other things equal and generally speaking . . . Associate Editor's hoping they think as much of me as I of them . . . King Sportl Seeing someone emerge from the dormitory reminds me - I think he's the guy who blocked those two kicks and ambled for two touchdowns that night, and off we go again. Ah, yes, hanging around 'til all have gone, then through that lonely lane to the stadium Chuh, Amelia?J . . . cheering, eager crowds as Co-Lin's Wolves come a'prowling on the field . . . tossing, swirling skirts as the cheerleaders pirouette, scream, exhort .... tense expectancy as toe rams ball, end over end, he takes it on the five, rambles to the twenty-five . . . peanuts and hard seats . . . finally the half, and the band takes over: drums and trumpets, dancing prancing major- ettes, Indian dances, cowboys, minstrels, razors, ballroom dancing in tight skirts, lights out, a star on the gridiron, and the wail of Stardust 5 finally, all standing, the strains of the Alma Mater float softly on the still air . . . more football: Stamp waltzing eighty for six, Co-Lin wheeling and dealing . . . Home- coming Gamel pomp, ceremony, crepe, beauti- ful girls, and handsome men . . . Poplarville lucking out on us . . . rain, rain, next game, and half-empty stands as Co-Lin swims to vic- tory . . . a dripping few huddling under soggy newspapers and leaky umbrellas . . . snuggling closer against her wet raincoat fa fitting se- quel to last year's miserable failurel . . . strag- gling back to the dormitories, to replay the whole game . . . The year moves on to basketball. Cute lit- tle forwards, hands on hips, waiting at center to receive the ball . . . Pinky at the hub, fak- ing everything in sight, hitting those wide crips . . . tall Nita, laughing, thoroughly en- joying every minute . . . more peanuts, more hard seats . . . Co-Lin's tall legion, winning everything . . . fakes, wild shots, sneak shots, left-handed reverse crips, thirty point leads . . . tense seconds as they blast a twelve point inequality . . . final whistles, and everyone surging to the exit . . . Championships and near Championships . . . The Extra-Curricular! And here I have an almost unlimited field, for books are forgotten, but thrilling events, seemingly more interest- ing, are sharply imprinted on the memory. Eager students, forever chasing the nectar of a hive of activity points . . . disappointed fresh- men, on finding practically all the leaders sophomores . . . string pulling behind the scenes, anything to win that election . . . the million club meetings, where everyone tries to be interested, but few are . . . Shakespeare, and Bassanio struts and frets in his hour, but the audience watches fair Portia, anyway . . . Dramatics Club night, and the audience captivated and spellbound fand I may be prejudicedj . . . little blondes act- ing superbly, dark-eyed brunettes looking good, acting, too . . . Pageant night, with di- rectors in fits of nervousness . . .- and, in the half light, the old and beautiful story repeated, while the Glee Club raises a beautiful voice toward the stars . . . the audience filing out, half-awed by the spectacle . . . That's it. Upon soberer reflection I could perhaps recall the events in more detail, per- haps clothe my recollections in more ponder- ous language, but antithesis I leave to the Hebrews, for they had a much deeper sub- ject on which to elaborate. I cannot, how- ever, close here, for one little memory keeps recurring. As Co-Lin's moons rise brilliantly and dispel the deepening twilight, there comes the thought: the freshmen of last year perhaps scoffed at the sophomores' final speeches, by now, we know what they meant. And I do not doubt that, as we leave fif we have not alreadyj, even by then we shall have become thorough patriots for Co-Lin's Cause. 1 L -? 5 .ww 1 . ..
