We have en- deavored to record student life and at the same time enrich those memories cherished by us all. The music you will find featured throughout the book is essentially a part of our Alma Mater. Much of the harmony of campus life at Co-Lin centers around the melody and overtones of its music. We pay tribute to the musical notes which symbolize the linking of traditions of the past and aspirations of the future. At the same time we would have you remember the physical, intellectual and spiritual influences which characterize our campus. Extra-curricular activities at Co-Lin are important, for it is in them that our student leaders are developed. These leaders are recognized every spring in a special ceremonial known as Honors Day. Then gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to those students who have led all their fellow students in club participation and school honors. Approximately one-sixth of our student body receive activity medals each year. The winning of such awards is based upon the following: club membership, offices held, honor roll, and individual and group per- formances. Every student's activity record becomes a part of his permanent file at Co-Lin. Ten or even twenty years after one graduates, his record will show how public spirited he was, how many school offrices he held, and to what organizations he belonged. 59 wh--ZOZOOU1 MSCI WCPO TRMDIES AND Under the direction of AUTO MECHANICS Mr. B. In fact, this event is the social highlight of the college year. Nobody knew, except the election committee, who was to be in the 1947 Court until the Master of Ceremonies called out the names on Monday evening, February 17. The suspense was terrific but exciting. The program was as follows: Twenty-Minute Concert by the Orchestra, Presentation of Personnel of Who's Who by Mr. Fortenberry, Class Sponsor, Coronation of Mr. and Miss Copiah-Lincoln by President M. Ewing, Alma Mater by the Audience, Sweethearts', by Jewel Curtis, Tumblers directed by Mrs. Ricks, I Love You Truly by Truett Myers, Minuet by Barbara Cooper and Aline Quinn, Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life by Nita Martin, Indian Love Call by Girls' Quartette, Grand March with music furnished by the Orchestra. A final touch of glamour was added to the ceremony when the ushers let go a barrage of colorful balloons from the balcony just as the Orchestra was closing the program with its theme song. i s 'sag : r - 1 I I l s ' T ! riifgil i J 1 4' qk 1.1 U x 'C' I ,551 .f 'I fx?- .jwighf B3 vw i it 5 1 , 'tt .II i VI l I 5 5 1 I l ,I :H ,I tl if la i, il ,, ' l , i 1 pg. This competition which sometimes becomes quite a ser ious matter, is the basis of our school songs, yells and those spontaneous war whoops that enliven every football game. The hearty hand clasp sets the stage for a fair battle in which each player strives to further the name of Copiah-Lincoln The return of our veterans, who proved to be veteran football players, heralded the return of the Co-Lin Spirit. Our season has b e e n deemed ,successful in spite of our losses. The games were enjoyed by the students who played, the students who backed them up, and the students who quietly twisted their programs. THE COACHES Mr. Fortenberry, with the able assistance of Mr. Ricks and Mr. Strait, comprised our coaching staff. Their leadership won the admiration of the students, the confidence of 3 the players, and many a hard battle of the pigskin. IFOOTIBAILIL Our Manager, William Lea Smiley, was the champion of our team. His year was a never-ending stream of dirty sox, Rinso, packing and unpacking togs, and measur- ing countless lengths of tape. His sports- manship was equalled to that of any mem- ber of the team. I MARIANNA SLAY HAIL To THE VARSITY We'll give a cheer to the varsity, Cheer them along the way, Onward to victory, May we win again today- We'll give a cheer for the varsity, Long may they reign supreme Shout till the echoes ring - For the glory of our team. DENNIS MAHAFFEY 92 ROSEMARY ANDING THE SOCIAL HOUR O women! If this be an ode, let it be dedicated to those graceful creatures who make life bearable, unbearable and zestful! And if this be dedicated to the fair sex, I must lay my setting in that one retreat where all is purely co-educational-the social hour. This is that happy period when all is bliss or anguish, depending largely on how chance has decided. As most of my work is that of obser- vation, it is only natural that I should approach this thing from the innocent bystander's 'point of view. Immediately after supper, the general exodus for the girls' dormitory begins. The happy couples wander into the dorm first, followed by the unfortunate women who are alone for the moment. The stags and I wander in next. Passing by the guardpost near the door, I give the password doogeblli Qthat's I,ll be good backwardsj, show my credentials, and thereby I am admitted to the inner sanctum. Ah, the lights are turned low tonight! There are only three searchlights sweeping the room at regular intervals. Then, too, the guard makes the rounds at' odd intervals of three minutes. I try to find a stuffed chair, but the earliest are safely tucked away in those. Nothing is left but one of those folding jobs, a sort of torture rack that has .done so much to cauie chronic backache. I must hope for the best. Seating myself uncomfortably, I start the waiit for romantic developments.. As I would like to be in on some of this development, I size up the eligibility situation. Four ladies are listlessly playing Rook at one table, but I notice that they are all incurable manhaters. Ho hum! Another sits over in the corner alone, she,s waiting for the already-established boyfriend. But out of this misfortune, I think I see Success sitting alone across the lobby. With carefully feigned nonchalance, I saunter in that general direction. As I approach, she smiles, but tragedy! The smile goes beyond me to someone else. I may as well go back and try again. I seem to be getting nowhere. Therefore, I resign myself to observing those who seem to be getting somewhere. My gaze is first drawn to the enraptured couple across the way. These two are lost-hopelessly, irrevocably, hopefully-under the spell of something. They stare deep into each others, eyes as if one were ice cream, the other a juicy steak. After ten minutes I decide that they will ruin their eyes after a few sessions-nothing more. Leaving these two to their ocular wanderings, my gaze shifts. And here is another type. This gentleman seems to think that he can win lady love by talking her to death. He orates at great length, what he is telling her I could only guess. Strangely enough, she is hanging onto his every word, this must be one of the budding romances. I vaguely remember that he is as silent as Selim the Grim in class, but that is of no consequence. P The light is beginning to bother me. Why didn't I think to bring my sunglasses? Near me some fresh and brave soul moves within three feet of the beloved. The glance the guard throws him would have scalded a stone. He moves back to the customary five feet six inches. The poor stags certainly look lonely tonight, I feel so sorry for us. I am consoled with the thought that at least I am near happiness. One of the girls wanders over to the piano. Oh, please, not Boogie Woogie! But she plays just that. That was once a good melody, but after ten minutes it is most dis- turbing. She plays her one selection and leaves, and my nerves are quiet again. But is that all? By the great Chopin, no! Two of the high school gi'rls move toward the piano and I slam my hands over my ears for what 'is to come. Why must it always be Chopsticks ? By the time they are finished, I am wishing for ia bowl of good Chinese rice to throw. About the lobby numerous Rook games move toward seven o'clock. I'd like to show someone some good card tricks, but no one is interested in card tricks. In fact, I can't find a someone to show anything. I pull the Ace-trick on myself, it only bores me. Would anyone be interested- in a four- handed game of tiddlywinks? Time marches on. At seven sharp, all this beautiful activity is torn asunuer. The bell shrills, all are stricken sad. The lost couple get one last, searching look, the orator gets in one last persuasive word, the women alone plan for tomorrow night, the Rook players throw in the trumps, the stags and I move toward the door. Iwatch the happy couples say goodnight and go toward their lonely rooms. Juliet waves at Romeo from the stairway. With my hands deep in my pockets, I plan. my exit. Why must it always be like this? I'm lonesome! -Carl Cobb English 102. 93 I if A Y ,f,Vf,:' 1: 0 Z 5 :jf-425-1 3 'hfw V 4 . f ? It's far from being a bore, A song with a story 'bout a lad Who can't get in the door. I.'se locked out in de cold night air, I haven't got the key, Break down the door I hardly dare, I'm really up a tree . Richard's here at home I know, I hear him breathing deep, Open the door, it's quite a show For the woman across the street. So here I stand outside my door, Biding time for Richard to wake, I can't get in, that's one thing sho , Wish he would get up for my sake. I f a policeman comes and takes me away To a place with a padded cell, Maybe Richard will come down and pay My way out of the jail! -Durwood Howard English 102. A,BorD A piece of creative writing I Whatever that may be Q Is the Av and' B requirement, And is it killing me! But that I'll meet this bitter test, I have no doubt at all, My name will then be posted high On every schoolroom wall. Ah, I can plainly see it now, This praising of my name, My high position exalted in Co-Lin's Hall of Fame. The dashing beauty of my style- The words, the thought, the rhyme Will be compared no doubt with all The Masters of my time. Ah, yes, there is no question now Of making A or BD, But as I read this poem again I think I'll make a DHI -Rosemary Noiton English 102. ' 'T THE TRILLIUM Have you often wondered where the Co-Lin Annual got its name, The TRILLIUM? The TRILLIUM was named after a wild flower, the Trillium, whose foliage is interesting to us. A Trillium has three petal flowers and three leaves, these representing the three counties which levy taxes to a common fund to maintain this school. THANKS ! We, the 1947 Co-Lin Trillium Staff, appreciate the cooperation and support of the students at Co-Lin, our faculty members, our photographer, Mr. John Williams, and our patrons. We take this opportunity to thank you and to remind the Co-Lin students that this publica- tion of the TRILLIUM would not have been possible if it had not been for our advertisers. We have enjoyed making the book and to all of you who helped us in any way we owe many thanks. 98 l If I- ' 1' l ii li 1 grin 0 9 11 i D 1111 1 'li 3 JJ' 99 0 X COPIAH -LINCOLN Junior College AccrecIi'red By The Sou+I1ern Associa+ion Of Colleges and Secondary Schools Member of Ihe American Associa+ion of Junior Colleges Wesson Mississippi 41 . .
