And yet, we hope that this publication will be more than a mere recollection of school events. ln it we have tried to bring to you Co-Lin as we see it-a versatile school--one in which there are innumerable opportunities for a stu- dent to gain stature mentally, morally, socially, and physically. We have endeavored to portray by word and picture phases of campus life which we trust will cause you to halt momentarily in later years and to reminisce of the seemingly atomic occurrences of the day. . . the piercing blast of the 6:20 bugle, the roar of the football throng, the serenity of your own room, the tinkling of pianos, the savory odor of hot buttered bis- cuits, the lull of an afternoon class, the invigo- rating freshness of a cold shower. These and other retrospections will be yours if we have succeeded. lf we have, thanksl ,' an rw i Hnnnrmlu UHHHNIIHIIUNS 5 HIHlHIlIS ' I H H S Q nv u ls rmus I unwmws .nv-J ...nw ...vw- llllllllll lllllll llll lllllllll 'Nail' 3 Efmvrwlvz Mr. Sc,sfJlwf:vml:l'Gl Dom? read 'has erLlifOri2', VG . l-',ml al f The plcrurce agfam, Have you Seen everything ln lr? EWING O The Sophomores of l94l leave Copiah- Lincoln in what promises to be the most critical period in the world's history. Likewise the year will be critical in the life of each graduate. Your participation in the community life of Co-Lin has been your greatest contribution. You can pro- mote the great American way of life only if you contribute an honest, sincere, and intelligent participation in commu- nity and governmental affairs. If democracy is worth dying for, it is likewise worth living for. The greatest menace to democracy is the danger of members of society mistaking liberty for license . May I challenge you to a carefully planned life of service with faith in your fellow man, and most of all, faith in God. Very sincerely, IIIIISIIIS w. s. HENLEY, Pres. R. E. REA, secy. R. c. WE TRUST THAT DURING THIS TIME YOU HAVE CHOSEN YOUR COURSES WISELY AND HAVE MADE GOOD APPLICATION THEREOF. Three times each week students and faculty members congregate in the auditorium of the Administration Building for religious observance, announcements, and a carefully planned program. lt is through this medium that a common bond of school spirit is established. As school spirit is the life blood of any college it is well that we pause to pay recognition to this essential phase of Copiah-Lincoln. Let us review various chapel pro- grams of the year that are typical of the '40 and '4l session. SEPTEMBER: A noisy shuffling of feet and then a dead silence as President Ewing begins, Welcome to Co-Lin. We hope that your stay here, etc., ad infinitum. Several announcements relative to sched- ules and text books, a hymn, and Dismissl OCTOBER: The chapel crowd is full of football spirit: the weather is ideal: the cheerleaders in rare voice. lt is the day of the Decatur game, and Co-Lin spirit permeates the campus. A prayer by Mr. Smith lsupplemented with silent odes for victory by the studentsl, selections by the band, and Dismissl NOVEMBER: A student devotional and a song by the girls' quartet is first on the ticket this a. m. Wesson lacks but half a game of being on top in the junior college grid circuit. This calls for a speech from Co-Captain Dick Thames. I hope, that is, uh, l mean . . . Boisterous applause, stomping of feet, and shrill whistling, Announcements of French Club meeting, and then, Dismissl DECEMBER: lt's rather nippy outside, but the au- ditorium is warm and talk of Christmas trees, pres- ents, and home for the holidays is prevalent. Miss Metcalfe sings Silent Night in French and then the students join voices in more Yuletide carols. Finally, the announcement everyone has been waiting for. Christmas holidays begin tomorrow. Dismissl JANUARY: Everyone's glad to get back after a joyous visit home. When Mr. Ewing finally gets everyone quiet, he and Mr. Smith bombast the stu- dents with threats of looming exams. Wesson's own Captain John Boyd shows Russian treasures and com- ments on the European situation. Announcements about annual pictures and then, Dismissl FEBRUARY: Wesson basketball is in full swing, and everyone is spouting cage iargon, A prayer by Reverend Duck, followed by announcement of Dra- matic Club meeting and reading of the first term honor roll sets the program in motion. Jane Kelly makes her singing debut, Stephen Foster's melodies played by Cap Franklin's brass sextet and then, Dis- miss! MARCH: Oh, hum, spring is here and there's no trouble getting students quiet this morning. l-lalf of 'em are sleepy and the other half in love. What hap- pened in chapel? Don't ask me, l was a member of the sleepy half. Oh yeah, someone said, Dismissl APRIL: Chapel got underway this morning with a song fest. Everyone at Co-Lin likes to sing and the walls literally reverberated with sharps and flats. Baseball is the by-word on the campus now and students buzz by mumbling Strike him out, Thomp- son! Announcement about lnternational Relations Club meeting and Dismissl MAY: Mr. Ewing and Mr. Smith are at it again. Yep, it's examination time and they want everyone to pass. The thing about it that hurts is that what they're saying is really true, Gosh! Final club an- nouncements and then a final Dismissl ,,-aw 5 if , rf , 9, QM, 9 153' N , Ny , 2' 5 4, L Af s 1 ! , T 1 I w M 3 5' 1 W ' w I 1 , L,- f 3 , '1 ,, UHHHNI ff IWQV'f 5 if III IINI HIIII FROM SCALES TO SCI-IUBERT PIANO ENTHUSIASTS ARE INDEED FORTUNATE IN COMING UNDER THE TUTORSHIP OF MISS GER- TRUDE MUTTON. ' Ol: TEMPO AND TRUMPETS The band enjoyed a year of priceless publicity this year as state newspapers captioned Director Franklin's banclsmen State's No. I Jitterbug Band and the dancing bandsmen from Wesson. Columns of press reports rolled out in inky splendor praising the synchronic maneuvers of the band and the super oomph of its slew of majorettes. Highlights of the year were a performance at the Millsaps-Howard game, an eleven mile parade at Mardi Gras, a prize-winning parade at Laurel's Chemurgic Trek, and a parade at the Junior College Band Festival in Jackson. All in all it was a successful season. Congratulations, Director Franklin and bandsmen. This determination backed up by sound psychology gained Farmer Johnson a host of friends who will be behind him all the way next season when Wesson regains her rightful place in the football circuit-The Championship! A stickler for fundamentals, the Wesson mentor gave the boys plenty of ground work before their initial warm-up tilt with the Mississippi College Frosh. The Pack downed the Choctaws 13-O only to lose 26-O to a well seasoned squad at North East Center, Monroe. Scooba, Wesson's first opponent in the Junior College circuit, was crushed by the Wolves 25-12. The grudge match of the year with Decatur lheralded by mutual towel wailing press reportsl gave the home crowd a thrill as PoIy's lads fell before Johnson's hard charging squad, l2-O. Encouraged by these wins, the Pack continued their victory pace defeating the Southeastern Frosh Zl-l4g Poplarville, 27-14, and Perkinston, I2-6. After a 6-O trouncing at the hands of Moorhead, Wesson reversed the score the next week at the expense of Goodman, Summit likewise fell before the Wesson onslaught, a ZO-7 score. Then Wesson's untimely Swan Song as Raymond snatched the championship from her grasp by a 22-6 score battled out on a mud-soaked Millsaps field. So the season went, a lot of victories, but one too many defeats. . . 'Mya 'S ,V ,vw ' fb X - a- 4 ,K 5, , . f X . f. J , X ,I ff 1.51. ai 'gary ' ' - , .,., A ,f W5 Nz' Y' .a , 5 J ' ' J -f ,. Despite this handicap, Coach Johnson's ouintet and Coach l-liIl's sextet proved to be a menacing threat to their opposition. This is accounted for principally by the tact that the local courtsters did not enjoy a series of victories, but, rather, spotted their wins throughout the season. To think that I have to go through life knowing that I am the Duchess. Such a fate is mine. All year I have ridiculed myself to other peo- ple. I have called myself all manner of names in order not to be discovered. I have talked with boys and girls and have vehemently agreed that the so and so that writes the Wesson Woo is a no good, gossiping, prying, sea hag. Such a life was mine. And yet there was an element of fun in it all. One night each week I could sit down to my typewriter and write what I thought to be the truth about the courtships of Co-Lin. I think I can safely say that in no instance did I maliciously lie. It was my inten- tion to present Wesson woo as I saw it. l made many mistakes, of course, but then, don't we all? Now that I have confessed, let me digress a bit and give you some of the highlights of the year: Lip Martin and Amelia Langford, after some months of steady companionship, came to a parting of the ways. A boquet to R. C. May and Louise Bryant for being the most devoted couple on the campus. Two years of undivided attention merits notice. Red Liverman, the big fullback for the Wolves, succumbed to the affections of Mary Nell Beall and remained that way. My prediction at the first of the year about G. L. Coker and Mary Anna Hennington was fairly ac- curate. They're still at itl And then there was the complicated triangle that enclosed George Sibley, Katherine Ledbetter, and Armand Perrault. Not caring for Geometry, Armand turned to Marilyn Puckett. When Ed Dunn and Monteith Peevy withdrew from school, they cut my column down somewhat. They were news! Our M. S. C. W. gals didn't do so bad, either. With Betty Wells it was first Ed Smith, who later in the year was supplanted by Floyd Stratton. Ruth Ellzey was very much in evidence the first semester with gridironster Harold Dickerson. But Harold left after mid-term exams and made another empty space in the column. Marie Russell enjoyed the spotlight for a while as Jimmy Moses and Buddy Newman vied for her favor. Jo Grubbs was another lass who switched about from time to time. Her following was a trio, B. H. Pitts, Prent Bufkin, and Henry Allred. Another triangle that had me guessing land still doesl was the Dick Aiken, Grace Nichols, Warren Vaught affair. A round of applause to those couples who remained so devoted throughout the year: Rush Kellum and Bennie Rea Slay, Billy Adams and Doris Lang, Moon Mullins and Edith Ross, Val Marshall and Elizabeth Shelton, Margaret Martin and Kenneth Youngblood, Robert Mize and Susan Proby, Ray Hammons and Annie Ray l??l Howell. Tommy East didn't get around on the campus very much the first of the year but did go with Ouida Jean Metts a bit and finally developed a case with Louise Brister. ll lllll Lloyd Brooks enjoyed some little notoriety in the column when he tried to court Pat Jones and Lor- raine Benton at the same time. Lorraine won out, and they've been steady ever since. And now for a few that seemed destined to last but for some unexplainable reason didn't: Norris Vest and Agnes Simmons, Carl Coker and Edwina Godfrey, R. G. Mitchell and Dorothy Tanner, Hazle Parsons and Otho Amacker, Red Mitchell and Louise Brister, Lamar Thompson and Katherine Strait, Dean Gates and A. J. Whittington, Hal Kelly and Teresa Foster, Carl Izard and Ruth Papizan, Paul Ellzey got quite busy the second semester taking care of a C. A. A. course and Betsy East. Martha Thompson lthe Hazlehurst gal with the Miami Beach complexionl was seen with J, L. Collins the first semester and with Howard Hankins the second. Nice work if you can do it. Paul Coussens and Mary Bush Sheppard made the rounds together and seemed to have a mutual interest in music and each other. Gretchen Garrett had a lot of boys wanting her company, but 'tis rumored that she had a strong in- terest elsewhere. It must have been strong, she left school. Arthur Varnado and Katherine Simms began their courtship in a rather tepid manner, but soon warmed up and when last heard from, were head over heels. Francis Izard made quite a few trips to the Girls' Dorm to see Betsy East and later to see Merle Carr. Nice going, Francis. Frank Winesette took an active interest in drum major Wanda at first, played solitaire for a while, had several dates with Sue Barnes, and finally melted under the spell of blonde Ouida Jean Metts. Geraldine Bowie proved to be a man-getter with jillions to her credit. The latest tabulation shows Red Mitchell to be the man of the moment. Roland Stevens came out of hiding long enough to make the column with Evalyn Hamilton and Mae Nell Gladney. Bill Beasley didn't so much as stick his head in the Girls' Dormitory this year. The reason? Martha Hart, of course. The courtship of Tom Moak and Marguerite Boe was in spurts at first, but settled down to a steady tempo after mid-term. Well, that's a few of the highlights of the year. And thanks for putting up with my nonsense, you're all swell sports. One final tip from the Duchess and I'll never worry you again. They learn how to serve a meal. For ages it has been the duty of the woman to serve meals. This is one pre- cedent that has stood the acid test of time, and will undoubtedly continue to do so. l would venture to say that no girl has come to Co-Lin lor any other insti- tutionl without matrimonial aspirations. lt is natural for every woman to want to be a wife. At Co-Lin the girls learn just what it is to wait on a table sur- rounded by seven hungry students. They learn what men like to eat, how they like their food seasoned, what they like to talk about and, in general, more about men than they would otherwise know. Although it is doubtful that every girl will be able to snare themselves a hus- band while at Co-Lin, the training that they receive here while serving will be valuable in any walk of life. The dining room duties that the girls perform during their month of serving may be one of three. The majority of the girls do the actual serving of the meal-placing the food on the table, pouring water into glasses, and hurrying back after refills. Others have certain tables allotted to them for coffee service. The remaining girls see that the syrup pitchers on the table are filled before each meal. Syrup is a popular Southern delicacy and Southern boys and girls can do more damage to a pitcher of syrup and a plate of hot biscuits than nearly any- one else. The girls receive their instruction from Miss Fannie Callender, the Co-Lin dieti- cian, and in conversations with her learn even more about the culinary art. lt should be stated here that another trait that the girls develop is the art of being cheerful. Cheerfulness goes hand in hand with a meal, and Co-Lin girls soon learn they must above all be cheerful while serving. ln general, the training they re- ceive is just as essential as any curricular course they could take. it fr i LY i - - ri- li -Y J ' ---. i, - l, ,' T, l SQ if l ' . Q ii ll i l lACTlVlTlE T THROUGHOUT the annual we have endeavored to stress the importance of extra-curricular activities to the Co-Lin students. No phase of Co-Lin is better balanced than this. Students have a chance to take part in nearly any type of activity they choose. There are numerous clubs, musical organ- izations, athletics, religious organizations in which the student can take part. Recognition is paid near the end of school each year to students who have had some degree of success in their extra-curricular activities. The seven people who gain the highest number of activity points lpoints earned by club membership, offices, individual and group performancesl receive gold medals. The thirteen next highest receive silver medals. Bronze medals are presented to the next highest twenty students. The eight high- est high school students also receive bronze medals. ln addition to this recognition the student's activity record is forwarded to the school he next enters. ln this way students who are capable of doing this type work are assured more of a chance to continue their work than would ordinarily be the case. REMEMBER WHEN ---- Coach Johnson won the Lions' Club Style Show with his bewitching beach ensemble ---- you heard the orchestra for the first time ---- the Wolfpack avenged last year's defeat by running roughshod over Decatur ---- Dick Thames used to make pep talks in chapel ---- Wesson held its Cow Day ---- when the band went to Mardi C-ras ---- Editor Edgar got hung loh joyl on Stunt Night ---- Howard S. To quote a few: Mr. Pearce: Be specific! What th inkest thou? Mr, Hill: Didja ever hear the one about- Miss Leggett: Some authorities say one thing and others say another. Miss Mutton: The piano is the maste Miss Metcalfe: Don't forget operetta ,Miss Thompson: No, no, no, no, no, ONE day a month each Co-Lin boy tosses his Lit book in a corner and dons overalls and brogands for a day's work with Cap Wallace. Despite the fact all of 'em groan when their work day comes they really enjoy a day spent outside of class rooms. In that day they can forget bad grades and reproving profs, work up an appetite and get some practical experience. lt is the uncertainty of what type of work a boy will do that makes the day a trifle exciting. He may be sent to plow some lonely hill behind the school, shove a lawn mower over the campus, drive a team of mules, pull corn, haul hay, build fences, drive a truck, or any of a score of jobs that accompany each season. ln doing these jobs the boys learn to work with other boys, how to take instructions, and, most important of all, what it means to get close to nature. 104 f,-.1 51 f . Without them the publication would not have been pos- sible. They bridged the gap between the amount of money we were able to raise and the cost of the book. Our realizing this is not enough. Each student should make himself realize that a great part of the cost ot this book was borne by the firms who paid money so that he might have a memoir of this year at Copiah-Lincoln Junior College. ln tact, you can do more than just realize it it you will. Thumb through the pages of these ads and note the tirms who bought space in the advertising sec- tion. You will soon be earning and spend- ing your own money. lt is our hope that in making a selection of companies with whom you spend your money that you will give caretul consideration to the firms who thought enough of you and your institution to contribute to the pub- lication ot this yearbook.
