AMERICA: BLESSED AND BESET America felt the power of religion in 1979 with a visit by Pope John Paul ll, and a confrontation with the Muslim leader Ayatollah Khomeini. The Pope is the first Polish Pope ever, and he is considered somewhat of a conservative. Yet he took America by storm as millions of people thronged to see him. He not only visited the cities of Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C., but he also visited Iowa. Many Minnesotans went to iowa to see the Pope, and they were spellbound as he spoke. The effects of his visit will last forever in the souls of America. The Ayatollah Khomeini did not visit us, but stunned us with his hostage taking practice of American diplomats. Over fifty American Embassy employees were held hostage in Iran by a group of radical students with the condolences of Khomeini. In return for the hostages, Iran requested the return of the former Shah of Iran. The Shah was in America for treatment of cancer, and Iran wanted him brought back to Iran for trial. The Shah was an ally of America, but believed to have run a cruel regime in Iran. To the date of this story neither the Shah or the hostages have been returned. ' Photo courtesy ol Mpls. Star 14

With the guidance ol Director Lavona Person fknown to most as Pnl, and the extreme hard work of the plays technical director Karla M. Krantz the play was successful. The play was a one performance sel- lout.
